  1. Did I mention that Rivera would be my backup catcher too.
  2. Braun throwing one away is the indicator another bomb is coming up. Way to go CV. You'd be in my rotation.
  3. Kotsay is seeking a 2nd opinion on his back. Now if that turns out to be serious coupled with a temporary loss of Kielty I think that very well could put them in the market for another OF. Having to rely on Shannon Stewart as your insurance is not real comforting.
  4. That he had an error doesn't mean all that much either considering it's one error in one game. Nevertheless, he's a triple away from the cycle. Oh yeah, that bomb he hit was off of Oakland's number 7 prospect who was 13-1 at AAA last year.
  5. I don't think they'd want Mench either. They have Wily Mo. Now a Clark/Turnbow combo might pique their interest a bit and offset a lot of Lowell's contract. They are still lacking a closer.
  6. Oakland is covered for now with Shannon Stewart. Unless his foot injury recurs and Kielty is worse than suspected, I can't see them having interest in Mench.
  7. "I barely recall Walker ever playing 3B" He played 23 games for the Padres at 3rd after they picked him up last year Al. He showed some rust there to be sure as he hadn't played third since early in his Twins days. Neither Graffanino (995 innings) or Walker (605 innnigs) has played much third. Certainly Walker is not a defensive whiz anywhere on the field. But Walker fits offensively much more than say Bell if Jenkins is dealt. Walker hits right handers very well (.297/.357/.456), rarely strikes out (more BB's than K's the last two seasons) and like Graffanino, profiles as the perfect number 2 hitter. He also has no place to play in SD after the Giles signing and the trade for Kouzamoff, and just won nearly a $4 million arby award so the Padres may look to move him and make Walker happy. Now I'm on record as preferring Braun over any platoon at third but if they go that route why not solve the OF overcrowding and get a better lefty option than Counsell in one move.
  8. I think Todd Walker in return for Jenkins makes a lot more sense especially if they decide that Braun needs more seasoning and Koskie is lost. A Walker/Graffanino platoon at 3B is a heck of lot more potent than Counsell/Graffanino.
  9. Bautista? I suppose he has some versatility and power but he doesn't hit for average, can't run, strikes out a lot and he's not all that young. There are guys off the street I'd take over him if I thought I needed help at 3rd, but I don't. Braun is much better than Bautista right now. Turnbow for Marte? Maybe worth the risk. I'm in the camp that any return to form for Turnbow will be temporary based on his entire up and down pro career. But Marte doesn't excite me much. He couldn't handle pressure in Chicago. As for Rivera, I keep hoping the Yankees come to the realization this spring that the mopes they have backing up Posada are inadequate (Todd Pratt are you kidding me?) and that they make us a good offer for Miller so we can keep Rivera who I prefer over Miller right now anyway.
  10. The first deal is ridiculous. Why not just waive Jenkins and eat his salary. Tanyon Sturtze? Is he still on a roster? The second, Mench for Brown is lopsided in the Brewer favor. Brown had a nice year last year, .287/.358/.457. Can't fathom the Royals dealing him for anything but pitching. And you would DFA Brown? Heck he'd be my starter in left right now. Crawford isn't going anywhere. Redding is 4A fodder so this would just be a deal to shuffle AAA bodies.
  11. Dumb idea from Brewer perspective. If the Cubs think Jenkins is an upgrade over Jones after seeing Jones every day last year, why would the Brewer think any differently? What Stone is thinking is that both players are disgruntled. While that may be true, swapping Jenkins for an equal lefthanded OF bat doesn't clear up the crowd in the Brewer OF. It also doesn't free up playing time for Gross who may be better at this stage (he's certainly cheaper) than either of those two. If I'm going to deal Jenkins to get an OF in return, I'd go for a guy to challange the more expensive Mench not Gross. That guy is Marcus Thames who is without a position on a team that could use a left handed bat. Then I'd dump Mench for minor leaguers and go with a Thames/Gross/Hart, corner OF rotation.
  12. Crede's a free agent after 2008. His agent is Scott Boras. Nuff said.
  13. Jackson made 8 starts last year. He was usually pretty effective the first time through the order. As guys adjusted to his funky delivery, he got hit harder. I'd think about putting him in the pen.
  14. One thing this thread has done is identify perhaps not a need so much as a wish for a versatile right handed bat that can be a fill-in platoon option at 3B and in the OF. Could Rottino provide that in 2007? He's really been the overlooked guy and I am starting to have a hunch that he's going to come to spring training raking and forcing them into considering him for opening day.
  15. Sorry aracko but you can't take total credit for that idea. On 11/22/06, in a thread entitled "does the Angels signing Matthews make Figgins expendable" I posted the following: "Robb Quinlan is another Angel worth inquiring about as a platoon guy in LF or 3B. His splits vs. lefties are quite acceptable .326/.356/.536 in 06." However with the injury to Rivera, Quinlan has more of a defined role and they don't need a left handed bat with Anderson, Matthews and Figgins all able to hit from that side. That would have been the time (late November) to pursue Quinlan. Had he dealt for him, he could have kept Graffy for the middle infield utility role, not had to overpay for Counsell, not had to offer arbitration to Mench, and the roster would be much more clearly set. But remember, back then Melvin was still thinking he'd have Cirillo back and he probably wasn't thinking how useful a guy like Quinlan could be.
  16. They need a lot of everything. But I don't think they'd give up Cordero for that package. More realistic would be Jackson and Turnbow for big Jon Rauch who's turned into a pretty good setup guy.
  17. "Sanchez isn't one of the top 10 in division" .344 BA (led league), 53 doubles (led league), .388 BA with runners in scoring position, 200 hits (3rd in league), 85 runs scored, 85 rbi, just 10 errors. Berkman, Pujols, Bay had better years but I'm hard pressed to find anyone else in the Central that had a better year. He may not be in your top 10 ender, but he was in mine at least for 2006 and he goes into 2007 still there.
  18. I don't think Villanueva/Aquino gets Baldelli. Now if the Brewers would have demostrated confidence in Villanueva and declared him a starter, then they probably could have swung that deal. But Baldelli is very popular among the few fans down there. They'd have a hard time selling a deal where the centerpiece in return is a guy that the Brewers by their actions (acquiring Vargas and spending a lot to get Suppan), seem not that confident about.
  19. "I don't think Pittsburgh will be competing with us..." From what I saw last year, it looked more like we weren't competing with Pittsburgh. Here's a little interesting comparison to mull over. Over the last 75 games of 2006: Pittsburgh 38-37 Milwaukee 31-44 Pittsburgh is not a complete team right now, but they have two of the best players in the division in Bay and Sanchez and are solid in a few other spots. Duke, Snell and Maholm are three young starters who could blossom into winners real soon. Jenkins would fill a huge hole in their lineup. Let's not help them out.
  20. You can't trade Clark and save any real money because nobody wants him at $4 million per year. Teams would ask for the Brewers to pay $2.5 million of Clarks salary before even discussing a deal. They have similar problems with Turnbow though not quite as severe. Forget the Pirates or the Cubs who would love Jenkins. Melvin would not deal Jenkins within the division especially as mostly a salary dump.
  21. "Where exactly is Gwynn going to play"? Center field for Nashville in 07. If he adds 25 points to his BA and 35 points to his OBP there and cuts his K's by 20%, he stands a good chance of being the Brewer leadoff man and CF in 08. That would allow them to move Hall to LF where they wanted him to move this year when they were courting Dave Roberts. It would also allow them to move Weeks down to 3rd in the batting order. Gwynn is not chopped liver. He may need to work on a few things, but we are talking about a high second round pick not some FA career minor leaguer. Clark figures to be the 25th man. At $4 million per year, he just might be the costliest 25th man in baseball. If any team would take him for half that price (the Brewers paying the rest), they should do it.
  22. Melvin shouldn't and won't give up Jenkins for next to nothing nor should he half to pick up much if any salary. In today's market, $7 million for a player of his caliber isn't out of line. Not sure what the Rotoworld comment about Linebrink means. The Padres have several relievers that would look good in Brewer uniforms, Linebrink, Cassidy and Meredith to name 3 of them. I still believe this is a Brewer need. I really like Meredith, but it may take a little more than Jenkins and the Brewers could always toss in one of their relievers. I like Jenkins too especially for the fact that he's been a Brewer his entire career. But he has just one year left on his deal and they have a guy in Gross that just might be able to match his numbers.
  23. The Pittsburgh writer is wrong when he speculates the Brewers would want "little in return" for Jenkins. If that was true, he'd have been traded by now. Melvin doesn't give away players for nothing (that's why he tendered Mench), particularly to divisional foes.
  24. Kind of disappointing that Joe Thatcher didn't get an invite. Are they not even interested in looking at lefty relievers?
