  1. I attended the game with my daughter and had a little better view than the fanfesters. Pujols can say what he wants but I did see his knees buckle on one pitch and he didn't hit a decent foul ball. Saenz looked like a veteran. His fastball was consistenly 92, occasionally 93. Now I am sure the Cardinals are making plenty of excuses like they were tired from getting in at 4 am Friday, then playing a day game after a night game blah, blah blah. From my perspective, the Brewers would be foolish to not give him another start if just to see if they have a phenomen comparable Fidrych in the 70's or Willis last year. Yes that is still a long shot but creating a buzz that sells tickets would be a departure for this franchise and refreshing. I can't remember feeling so good after a game than I did today.
  2. Way to go Richie. Now Keith, end it right here.
  3. Win or lose, this team is giving fans their money's worth.
  4. Keith Ginter is so similar to Steve Garvey as a hitter it is amazing. Didn't Garvey also wear number 6? I believe if he played everyday, his numbers would be very similar to Garvey's typical season too, around 25-30 HR, a .290 BA, and 100 RBI. How can this team afford not to have him in the lineup?
  5. Proving again the value of a pitcher that can hit!
  6. Actually, statistically he is worse. 5-11, 5.93 ERA in 135 major league innings, mostly with the Angels. He is 29 years old. Did throw 6 plus shutout innings at AAA this year. He is the 10th righthander in a row to start vs. Brewers. Will be interesting to see who is in the lineup.
  7. lend, While it's a way too early to boast about a prediction I made about the Cardinals finishing closer to last than to first, this series did expose them. Last year they were much deeper team. Throw a lefty at them, and they had Eduardo Perez in the lineup who kills lefties. Need a clutch pinch hit? They had Orlando Palmiero. Aging Reggie Sanders as good as he was last year with Bucs, is not an upgrade over Drew. They can still hit, but its just not as balanced a roster and they are resting hope on a starting rotation that really doesn't scare anybody.
  8. Note to Ned: Give Brady another start tomorrow.
  9. Unlike most of you in Wisconsin, I did get to see the game. Here are my impressions. As one of Kinney's detractors, I have to admit I liked what I saw out of him. He got in trouble in the first by locating pitches down the middle but managed to extracate himself nicely which was something he had trouble doing in the past. Once he got settled in, he was threw the ball very well. His fastball consistenly was hitting 92 and he painted the corners on several occasions. His control was very good. Most impressive were his two hits. Both were solid line drives. Offensively, Helms put nice swings on the ball. After watching Spivey go 0 for 5 and bobble another ball in a key situation, I have to wonder why he is batting 3rd and why he is playing ahead of Ginter. Take one of those offers Doug before they all dry up. Hernandez looked rusty more than anything else but he got no help defensively either. The first two hits he allowed were not hit all that hard. Then Bennett had an opportunity to field that bunt and make a play at first but he opted to see if it would go foul when it obviously was not going to even come close. After Pujols tied the game with a sac fly, Edmonds hit a ground ball that Spivey couldn't handle in short right (I couldn't help thinking that Gantner made that play countless times and perhaps Ginter or Hall would have too). I have feeling of impending doom with Rolen up and I was correct.
  10. While this pitching matchup on paper clearly favors the Cards, keep in mind that Williams was not fully stretched out this spring due to shoulder tendinitis and he wasn't very effective in the innings he did pitch. Williams insists he's ready but Dave Duncan isn't so sure. This game could come down to Adrian Hernandez vs. Cal Eldred in the middle innings. That is a much better matchup for Brewers than Williams/Kinney. Hopefully Ned will have a very short hook today.
  11. I have to agree with Robert. That tapper to third was not a tough play. If he handles it cleanly, they get him at first though it would have been a close play. Two games now that Helms has not been charged with an error but has made bad plays in the field. Fortunately, Kolb was up to the task last night despite the shaky defense behind him. None of the balls hit off him were hit hard. It's only two games, so I am willing to cut Helms some slack. Hopefully, they can keep it rolling tonight.
  12. Great job by the bullpen. Even the two runs surrendered by Ford were tainted. Ford himself could have turned a double play but his slight bobble cost him and Helms should have made that play on Pujols' double. At least he should have smothered it and prevented one run from scoring. Very encouraging to see Ford have hitters pounding the ball in the dirt. Free Keith Ginter. Free Bill Hall.
  13. Living in the Chicago suburbs and having to watch Chip Carey gloat about the Cub fans in attendance, I decided to listen to the games rather than be subjected to the Cub slant on everything. That being said, here is the dirty little secret: Wrigley Field is a dump. For all its so-called quaintness, and ivy on the walls (the only really nice touch), it is actually a better museum piece than a functioning ballpark in 2003. It's almost impossible to get to by car much less park. It's even worse trying to get out. I won't even mention the dank cramped concourse, ancient restrooms, and the many obstructed view seats. Could it be that many Cub fans actually prefer a modern ballpark and all its amenities? I know a lot of them and they won't admit it but I think it has a lot to do with the migration to Miller Park. I grew up in Wisconsin but my kids were born in Ilinois. They much prefer games at Miller Park (they became Brewer fans as a result too!)
  14. I agree Nance should get another look in September. Another guy who should get a callup is Cody McKay. Like several guys at Indy, he had a terrible first half but has picked it up in the second. He is also already on the 40 man roster. Given the continued struggles of Eddie Perez since the break, they need to look at other potential options for next year.
  15. Now that DeJean has been traded, Yost needs to be a little more creative in using his depleted pen. Rusch retires 4 guys on 11 pitches seemingly effortlessly and he gets pulled for De Los Santos who has been anything but reliable all year. Why not let Glendon go at least the 8th and if he cruises, let him finish. There's no law that says a guy can't get a 3 inning save.
  16. I am tempted to rescind my genius tag for Ned for not pinch running for Eddie but even geniuses are allowed a minor miscue once in a while.
  17. I take everything back, Ned's a genius.
  18. Conti bats left and Padilla is a rightie. Clark vs right handers going into today: .318/.352/.418 Clark overall since All Star Break: .345/.429/.527 I rest my case.
  19. He might have gone one batter to long with Davis on a very hot day. Then again Bowa might have done the same with Padilla. In watching MLB.com gameday where pitch location is shown before the result is known, I was almost certain Ginter had homered when I saw the location and it marked "hit into play". He never misses in there.
  20. My bad. The flight leaving Columbus departs at 8:40 and takes 5 minutes longer than from Indy. I was thinking more of Helms at third, Hall at short and Ginter at second. Besides that improvement, they would have sent Conti back down to make room for him (or put Vandy on DL) and would have Clark in the lineup.
  21. Just checked the airline schedules to be sure but Midwest has a flight departing Indy at 8:50 arriving in Milwaukee at 9:50. Now since they knew when he was getting off the DL, they should have been able to book him on that flight ahead of time and get him to Miller Park in plenty of time. Of course he might of had to crawl out of bed around 6 and actually fly like the rest of us but Indianapolis is not like going through O'hare. I'm betting the traveling secretary goofed up and they are covering for him. Maybe they should hire George Kostanza?
  22. I guess his sleep is more important than trying to win today's game.
