  1. "Where has the good Ben Sheets gone?" You mean the guy before he signed a $40 million contract? I hope he's not hanging around with young Teddy Higuera and Cal Eldred.
  2. Instant Classic. Is this why we love baseball or what?? This is one I'll be thinking about in the middle of winter.
  3. Should have more runs but 65 pitches in 3 innings on 92 degree day has to be taking a toll on Rusch. Memo to Ben: Pitch around D Lee.
  4. Not sure I understand the angst about the lineup. The hottest hitters, Clark, Hall and Lee are in the top 4. Moeller's hitting .306 this month while Miller's 6 for 33 with no RBI in June and he's in a big Ofer. Get used to Overbay sitting against lefties. Helms has hit them well and limiting Lyle against lefties might end up helping his overall numbers.
  5. I suspect those criticizing Clark for his baserunning must have been listening to the game and not watching it. He was clearly safe both times and it wasn't really all that close. Even Bob Brenly admitted it on the Cub telecast though he did try to expound some theory about the base being blocked. I do question why Yost wasn't out there protesting. Heck even a mild protest on the first one could have prevented the second. The 2nd base umpire was playing to the pro-Cub crowd and appeared to enjoy calling Clark out both times.
  6. Lots of ways to dissect this one boys but it came down to two blown calls on identical plays by the same umpire and an inexcusable error on Clark. Oh did I mention that Miller was 0-2 with RISP, lowering his anemic average in such situations to .143.
  7. Despite Perez' slump, the heart of the Cub order has really been hot. Here's the June breakdown: D. Lee .457/.500/.686 Ramirez .387/.433/.661 Burnitz .385/.444/.646 The pitching staff is going to have to be on its game and more importantly, the offense needs to score runs.
  8. The Brevard box score incorrectly lists Villanueava's ERA. According to BA stats, its 1.85. All his numbers are remarkable. Just a .172 BA against, 75 K's and just 15 BB in 58 and a third and he's only 21 which is young for that league. Count me in the revolt if he doesn't go way up the P50 charts.
  9. Hardytheman, I'm fighting the Villanueva battle on the Power 50 thread. The argument I'm getting is that he's benefitting from the FSL being a pitchers league. Pitcher's league or no for a 21 year old to be allowing a .166 BA against in High A is impressive. Most of the players in that league are 22 or 23. As for Capellan, there's no getting around the fact he hasn't come close to the hype he was getting in December after the trade. Yes he had a string of decent starts but he hasn't dominated once and he was supposed to be dominating.
  10. "No one Milwaukee drafts will see Miller Park before 2008 anyway". That is certainly not necessarily true. Sheets was in starting rotation less than 2 years after being drafted. Weeks appears ready offensively now, just 2 years after being drafted. If they draft a college player at a need position, you put them on the fast track. There is no need for a highly rated college position player to start below high A ball. There have been guys taken out of college that have gone straight to the big leagues. I'm not advocating that but some guys are talented enought not to need 3 years of seasoning.
  11. I'd still draft Clement and I'd put him in a Brewer uniform immediately. He could not possibly do worse than Chad Moeller.
  12. Obermueller tossed a complete game shutout of the Astros late last year when they had Berkman and Beltran in the lineup. He also knocked them out of the 03 race on the next to last day of that season. I don't think his starting is the slam dunk Astros win that Rotoworld thinks it is.
  13. It wouldn't be so bad, but the three hottest hitters at AAA are Kevin Orie, Trent Durrington, and Steve Scarborough and not Weeks, Fielder or Hart.
  14. Apparently Sheets got sick during Monday's game so his status is questionable. Actually, if I'm any indication, I think this sickness has spread to the fan base. Pass the Pepto.
  15. In hindsight, bringing in Obermueller, then cutting Phelps after the game and bringing up someone to pitch tomorrow if Sheets can't go would have been a better move.
  16. Back to back lefties against a team like the Reds makes a lot of sense.
  17. As I post this, the number 3 starter has now allowed 19 earned runs and 33 hits in 14 innings this spring. Jim Powell, by the way, said Saturday, that "for the most part, Santos has had a good spring". Right Jim.
  18. As a big Obie supporter, I'm not all that concerned if he starts the year in the pen. I kind of suspected that after Obie relieved instead of started yesterday, that he was ticketed as the long man. It's not like Glover hasn't pitched equally as well this spring. Like Hardytheman points out, Victor's leash has to be very short. Sure spring stats aren't always that important. But allowing 25 hits in 11 innings (a whopping .463 Batting average against) hardly inspires confidence. It's not like Santos is an established ML starter, last year notwithstanding. However, after the spring he's had so far, it would be a shame if Obermueller finds himself at Nashville just because he has a couple of options left.
  19. I am sure they will give Santos his two more starts this spring before they make any adjustments and perhaps as they did last year, allow him to fail into the season ala Kinney. But as long as Obermueller and Glover continue to do well, they have alternatives. Since being 3 or 4 doesn't really matter, sticking another righthander between Davis and Capuano should not be a problem.
  20. I would hope this awful outing can be attributed to the proverbial "dead arm period" common in spring training. Then again, the times in 2004 when Santos didn't have it, he really got rocked. That he's the nominal number 3 starter has to be a concern. He's now allowed 14 earned runs in 11 spring innings. Not good.
  21. I think expecations were a little too high for a guy who has just about 100 innings above A ball. Had he been ready to pitch as a major league starter, I doubt the Braves would have let him go. He'll be fine. Let him get experience at Nashville.
  22. How many times did he get through the tough Astro order last September?? The answer: 4 times unscathed.
  23. That was a pretty nice performance by Obie today. I'm listening to Cubs/Sox and wind is blowing flyballs out of the park in Mesa. Obie by my count induced 6 ground ball outs along with 2 K's with no runs. I'd say he's still in the competition for a rotation spot. I know some of you don't want to hear that.
  24. Santos will get a mulligan for this start as the presumptive "no. 3 starter". But his situation is a lot like Matt Kinney's was last year. He's not so solidly entrenched that he can continue to be rocked and expect to keep a job. Especially this year with so many guys fighting for starting jobs. Between Capuano, Capellan, Hendrickson, Helling, Glover, De la Rosa and yes Obermueller, they have enough to fill not just 2 rotation spots, but 3 if Santos struggles.
