  1. Bunting guys on first and second over is not easy even for good bunters (which Sheets is not). I wouldn't have bunted and given up the out but if I did, you have to use Hall there. Sheets was absolutely done anyway having thrown well over 100 pitches. Now he's not only stopped a rally, he's used up another hitter in Liefer to run. Heck use Obermueller to run.
  2. Now they pinch run for him after giving up a precious out down two runs. Comn NED!
  3. Late June, nice evening, no school, team in contention and 13,000? The theory that with a long homestand people had already been to one of the earlier games is probably correct but at the same time discouraging. The White Sox offer half price on every ticket for Tuesdays all year. Brewers only do it on the terrace reserved seats. Time they looked at making it a bargain night everywhere in the park.
  4. Are Burba, Bennett, Wise and Adams still on the team? Seventh and eight innings and he goes with Kinney?
  5. Six outs recorded during Jenkins 3 AB's. Now that's ugly.
  6. Yost's biggest weakness as a manager is his decision making regarding the bullpen. Bringing in Kieschnick in that situation fresh off several days at home with his wife and new baby and after not pitching well his last outing was asking for trouble. If he was willing to have Vizcaino come in to bail out Kiesch when the lead was down to one, he should have used him to bail out Obermueller when the lead was 3. As for the 8th, its a lot to expect Yost to think outside the box and bring in Kolb there. But that would have been an excellent move. Overall, Obermueller deserved a better fate. He was sharp with his control and when he is, he is effective. That's not surprising considering he was finally working on normal time between starts. Looking back, his rather hefty ERA could be more respectable. In at least 3 of his starts, he left the game with a couple guys on and the bullpen has let all those runners score. That's 3 quality starts in his last 4. A lot of teams would take that from their 5th starter.
  7. Always nice to be able to point that out to my Cub fan co-workers. Several observations about last nights game. Angels bullpen is not as deep as Brewers especially with Percival out. Watching game on satellite, Angel broadcast had Washburn on tape fondly remembering his days as big time Brewer fan listening to Ueck. He admitted still following Crew and was happy for there success this year. Then he goes out and contributes to it. Clark's outburst was very welcome as was Pods getting on base 4 times. Brady is rather well suited to hit second. Production at top of order is critical. I also think Yost stuck with Santos as long as possible to save Wise for a start Saturday and let Capuano get another rehab start.
  8. Nothing wrong with making a prediction. I think Hater's sense of impending doom is certainly understandable watching this team try to stay afloat with no offense for a month. Sooner or later, the offense has to break through or this season will begin looking a lot like many recent seasons.
  9. I only stayed with this one for four innings. Hendrickson's curve is impressive. His 88 MPH sinker moves when it is down but when it is up, close your eyes cause it's going to get smoked. Of the two, Seanz and Hendrickson, Seanz certainly has a lot more on his fastball. I saw only one of Grieve's gaffs but it was enough. He doesn't hit enough to overcome that dandy glovework. The 13 runs he's batted in have been offset by nearly that many runs allowed misplaying balls. Clark has scuffled with the bat, but with a young pitcher like Ben out there, Ned should have had the best defensive club on the field. Now offensively they keep reaching new lows. As much stuff as Jackson has, he has compiled an ERA over 5 at AAA this year. I like Ginter but after Spivey walked leading off the second and Jackson went 3 and 0 on Ginter, Jackson threw him a straight as an arrow fastball right in Ginter's wheelhouse and he took it. It may be he had the take sign but either way, this team needs to be more aggressive with cripple pitches. Ginter eventually walked but has Bennett and Hendrickson behind him. Living out of market, I got Scully's telecast. As great as Scully was, its time for him to give it up. He seemed little interested in any of the 3 games of this series and more interested in repeating the home towns of Brewer players. He must have mentioned Jenkins playing at USC 15 times during the three games. I wonder too if Scully realizes how stupid a blonde wig looks on a guy who is probably in his late seventies.
  10. Having just read the posts on this game, I have to say I concur with just about every comment made. Shelmark was right on the button. Did Jenkins have something put in his contract that forces Yost to bat him cleanup even against lefties with sweeping curveballs? Am I wrong that Moeller/Bennett is no upgrade over Perez/Osik? Now they have 13 man staff, leaving just 4 pinch hitters available including Kieschnick. Two of those four are Durrington and the backup catcher of the day. Help! Obermueller inactivity meter now at 13 days. Maybe he could pinch hit.
  11. A few random thoughts on this thread. I totally agree that Yost is too easy on the umpires. The none call on such an obvious attempt to break up a double play should have been more hotly contested. While Clark isn't swinging the bat very well for the past few weeks, in this game he did make a couple nice plays that I am not sure Grieve would have made. Nevertheless, they need more production from the right fielder whoever he is. I can't understand why an athlete like Bill Hall is never mentioned for a switch to the outfield. Someone mentioned Hall needing to learn value of a walk? Hall is not a number 2 hitter. He has become a run producer, not a table setter. Hit him 6th or 7th and don't worry about walks.
  12. This postponement is fishy. True there is a line of severe storms headed to Pittsburgh. But this same line got through Chicago in about an hour. I think Pirates were looking to save staff after playing doubleheader Wednesday.
  13. All of you ready to replace Obermueller because of his performance so far, remember he's the one guy who has had to adjust to a very irregular pitching schedule due to tinkering by Yost. I fear that all this messing with Obermueller is going to make it hard for him to pitch with any confidence until he can settle into a regular rotation. Whether he gets that chance is another question.
  14. Podsednik's May numbers: .215 BA, .307 OBP, .246 SLG. This is quite disturbing. For this team to score runs, he needs to get going. With Grieve nursing a groin and Spivey on the longest day to day watch of all time, Ned does not have a lot of flexibility. I'd sit Scotty a couple games, move Clark to center, Ginter to right and Hall to second. Hopefully, sitting and watching will get his juices going.
  15. Well since it won't be Kinney, I'd be all for giving Saenz another shot if Capuano isn't ready. I think he earned it the last time and you can just as easily send him back down again. Otherwise, I'd go with Wise. Burba and Kiesch have not been stretched out enough and are too valuable in late innings.
  16. Did I miss something? Isn't Kinney penciled in to start Saturday unless he's needed early in Friday's game, in which case Capuano will be activated to pitch with Crew instead of for Indy? Either way Capuano is nearly back and a move will need to be made to clear a spot for him on the active roster. Obermueller was under the gun last night to keep from being the guy, but he responded pretty well whereas Ford did not, so it would logically be Ford going when Capuano is activated. Kinney's been better out of the pen, so let him stay as the long guy/spot starter and go with Capuano, Santos, Obermueller as 3, 4, 5 in rotation. If one of those guys pitches his way off the team, then look to Indy for those other guys.
  17. Is everybody forgetting Capuano?
  18. He'll be in the lineup today if Yost follows his pattern of giving Counsell rest on a day game following a night game. He will also get to face lefty Ramirez of the Braves over the weekend.
  19. I was critical of Yost's moves last week. Last night I thought his moves were well timed and he outmanaged Robinson Trailing 3-0 going into the ninth the way Hernandez was pitching was a large deficit. That's exactly the time to get a struggling reliever like Bennett an inning. Even after a 14 inning game, Yost still has 6 guys in the bullpen fresh enough to pitch tonight if needed including the setup man and closer. That is quite remarkable.
  20. What's amazing is that MLB finds enough cash around for Expos to pay a Livan Hernandez the market rate. Had the Brewers had a little higher payroll budget, he was the guy I would have pursued in a deal this winter. Having watched a little of the Cardinal/Expo series that just ended, I am a little worried. They are scoring a little more and their pitching is very decent. Lets hope Sheets can dominate tonight and win a close one for a change.
  21. All this talk about Hall vs. Counsell is masking the biggest managerial mistake of this game. That was the decision to use Burba to pitch the 8th inning when Vizcaino was available. Isn't Viz supposed to be the setup guy? Just because Burba had a nice string of outings (that ended by the way Friday in the 9th inning), he now gets the setup role?? My only guess as what Yost was thinking was that he didn't want to use Viz two days in a row unless he absolutely had to (which he did) or didn't want to use Kolb (even though his injury wasn't to his arm). The problem with that thinking was there was an off day today, and Burba went a full 3 innings just two days ago and wasn't all that rested himself. Quite honestly, this team could have been 6-0 on this trip. Every game lost had some very bad managing as a major contributing factor.
  22. When you consider the Reds lineup that was loaded with left handed power, Obermueller's performance was as good as one could expect from 75% of right handed starters in the league. Not great, but acceptable. He minimized damage in what could have been a huge 4th inning and didn't get rattled after Junior took him deep. The bottom line was he was ahead by 2 runs through 6 and that should have been enough for a guy who has not been pitching every 5 days. Heck, I might have pulled him for a pinch hitter in the top of the 6th when he bunted with runners on first and third and one out. That was another wasted opportunity to pad the lead done just to keep the starter in the game. A little creative thinking was lacking. They could have used Hernandez in relief Thursday, optioned Durrington and brought up a pitcher for Saturday or reverted to Kinney.
  23. I've had all night to ponder this disaster and just have to chime in with a few observations. One way to overcome a short bullpen is to put the game out of reach when you have the chance. Obermueller is a decent hitter for a pitcher but should have been pulled for a pinch hitter in that situation. They were one hit away from putting the game basically away in top of 7th. Say he hit Helms there and Wes clears the bases with a double. You've accomplished 3 things. Obermueller leaves the game ahead with some confidence restored. Helms wakes up. Team wins the game and series. Yost claims to have learned so much from Bobby Cox. Yeah right. No way Greg Maddux bats in that situation, much less Wes Obermueller. It's time Melvin does something to get a serviceable left handed reliever (or two). Reds lineup of Casey, Dunn, and Griffey cries out for a lefthander. Managing is about setting up players to succeed. Last two games Yost has done the opposite.
  24. While they still may have lost, Yost did a very poor job handling the bullpen in this game. Using Ford in the 7th was questionable with Kieschnick available who has been very good lately, not to mention Burba. But the biggest mistake was bringing Ford back in the 8th. He had Kieschnick or Burba to get one inning and then bring in Vizcaino for the 9th. Then after pitching to just 3 hitters where he dominated, he pulls Vizcaino for Bennett instead of Burba in a tie game. C'mon Ned get a clue.
  25. He's starting to win me over along with Spivey. Just the Brewers luck that the two most heralded prospects play the same positions. It's time to start lobbying for the DH in the NL.
