  1. Baseball America has a nice article on Clement that dispels concern about his defense behind the plate. "Showing much improvement behind the plate, Clement threw out 27 of 66 basestealers (41 percent), including four of five in a game against Stanford" USC coach Mike Gillespie on Clement: "Anybody that watches him this spring will see that there won't be any doubts about his defense". Given his potent bat, position, and the fact he's practically from Brewer backyard (Marshalltown, IA), I'd hope the Brewers select him if available.
  2. What stands out in looking at Gamble's stats are the few HR allowed: only 13 in over 350 career innings. Would not be surprised if he isn't among those who will see some time in Brewer pen during 05 season as that area of team could be unsettled for much of the season.
  3. Before this guy went to Japan he posted a sub 3.00 era for Detroit in 2002. Melvin may well have uncovered another nugget here as replacement for Viz. While I don't agree with every move Melvin makes, he sure continues to look everywhere to find talent and he deserves a lot of credit for that.
  4. Just saw the Kelley Gulledge transaction. Now, some of you will recall that after they signed Ben Van Iderstine about a week after I suggested it on this forum, I made a tongue-in-cheek remark about the Brewers paying me for advising them. Then I made my next suggestion that they sign Fargo-Moorhead catcher Kelley Gulledge. While I'm glad they are following my suggestions, where's my check Doug?? Gulledge is a good signing in all seriousness.
  5. The one encouraging number for Krynzel so far is that he has only 5 K's in those 31 AB's. By comparison, Cub prospect Jason Dubois and Sox prospect Joe Borchard have each fanned 21 times in roughly 50 AB's in the same league. Consistent contact is key for Krynzel.
  6. I have to think the reason Clement is rated so highly is because he is a catcher and to at least some degree projects as a catcher by somebody. If scouts didn't think he could catch as a pro wouldn't his stock be a little lower? After all offensive first basemen are not that hard to find.
  7. The first baseball game I ever attended was June 27, 1958 (I was 5 years old). That night Hammerin Hank belted number 98 of his career off Sandy Koufax no less. I was in attendence again in July 1976 when Aaron hit #754 (that's correct, 754, his next to last). That was a walkoff game winner against the Texas Rangers on a Sunday afternoon. Aaron came back for a curtain call after that one and he mentions it in his book "I Had a Hammer" as being much more memorable than his last one. I will be sad if Bonds passes Henry.
  8. Branyan now tied with Gary Bennett with 14, only 7 behind Helms.
  9. Branyan now just 8 RBI behind Helms.
  10. If Branyan stays in the lineup the rest of the year, its possible he could end up second on the team in home runs and as high as third in RBI. What does that say about the rest of the team? By the way, teams have figured out that Overbay has trouble with offspeed pitches down in the zone. All the excitement over his performance the first half is starting to fade with his poor second half.
  11. I looked up "base clogger" in the dictionary and lo and behold saw a picture of Lyle Overbay.
  12. There seems to be an epidemic of sore wrists among third basemen not named Helms. Is he twisting the wrists of his competition?
  13. Had I been online last night, I would have pointed out that Merriweather's strike zone from about the 5th inning on bore no resemblence to his strike zone in the first few innings. Hard to blame Davis as he threw pitches that had been strikes and suddenly weren't and the game changed dramatically. Merriweather has to be the worst ball/strike umpire in the game.
  14. I've been a big critic but it was nice to see Grieve not only homer and double, but actually pull the ball with authority. That was shades of his Oakland days. I'll lay off him for a couple weeks and see if he can keep it up.
  15. "2-4 over the last 6 games and no one is excited anymore" Well, they are actually 2-5 in the last 7, 3-7 in the last 10 and 6-11 in the last 17. Against the Bucs and Reds they are 1-9 since July 2nd. No matter how you slice it, those are not encouraging numbers.
  16. The tide turned in Pittsburgh with the double header shellacking on July 2nd. Since then, only real effort has been put forth against Cubs.
  17. I am getting the sense that management has given up. How else do you explain Melvin sitting on his hands and Yost managing like the outcome of games is meaningless.
  18. Once again managerial moves backfire.
  19. Several questions about that inning. Why not bunt Ginter? Why have Davis hit in that situation when you have Adams up in the pen?
  20. Hitting Clark third isn't all that bad. Prior to last night's game, he had reached base in 17 straight games that he started dating back to early June. The alternatives are really not much better unless you move Overbay up.
  21. I did see the game. Apparently because in his first start vs. the Dodgers Hendrickson had trouble throwing his curve for strikes early, he decided to go strictly with his mediocre fastball in the first inning. He got too much of the plate with it occasionally and the Reds hitters didn't miss. When he finally started going to the curve more, it was erratic but it did make his fastball more effective. For him to be successful, he needs to be able to establish that he can throw his best pitch for strikes from the get go. If he can do that, he can keep hitters off balance. Unfortunately, in his first two starts, he hasn't been able to do it.
  22. Great analysis Shampoo. I might add that since May, Grieve has a measly 3 extra base hits (no home runs) in 101 plate appearences. This from a corner outfielder with a bad glove.
  23. If memory serves, I believe Ginter took Prior deep twice last year. Keith is way overdue for a power surge.
  24. Just once I would like to hear a manager or coach say: "I made a dumb call there and it might have cost us the game". Every player in the locker room knows it was a dumb decision, and by his not admitting it, he loses more credibility with players. Sherman did the same thing after costing Packers a playoff win last season by not going for the win on fourth down then to make matters worse, he shifts blame to defensive coordinator. Watch out for trouble this year. Barry Alvarez once did this after Ron Dayne fumbled late in game his freshman year when Badgers should have been taking a knee. He defended his poor decision and next week they got clobbered. It took him a while to get his team back. Players put it on the line and when they don't produce, they can't make excuses. Managers and coaches shouldn't either.
  25. Overbay and Jenkins: nothing for eight. Eight hits: all singles. Two runs allowed: Both unearned Managing decision: Completely botched. 10 game road trip ahead. Where were those positives?
