  1. If we finish under .500 and i was Attanasio, i look hard for a replacement to Melvin. The Selig's seemed to operate with a low expectations mentality that Attanasio doesn't share and i wouldn't either. Seven seasons under Melvin with one playoff berth that took a near historically good second half from CC is hardly a resume that would make me feel that Doug is a must keep asset. I don't think Melvin is a poor GM, but i don't think what he's done here justifies the national reputation he holds. I'd rank him more as just a solid nothing special GM. Certainly replacing a solid GM could backfire if he was replaced by a guy who does worse, but a smart replacement could also bring better results. I personally would prefer that Attanasio rolled the dice on finding an improvement even knowing that he just as easily could end up hiring a downgrade.
  2. I'm not all worried about Trevor and blown saves happen all the time in baseball, but i do admit that since we've had him i do fear the home run more than with other closers simply because his fastball is only 85 and if his location is off bad on any pitch, it becomes a wet dream to any hitter with power. That said, Hoffman has excelled for a long time simply because he's had such consistently good location on pitches he throws.
  3. I agree on not wanting Cust anywhere near a glove. That said, barring a serious injury, Gerut looks to have almost no role at all on the team beyond a pinch hitting chance once in awhile. With him being a lefty and Macha preferring Edmonds, Gerut is our 2 million dollar designated sun flower seed eater.
  4. Not me. Losing very close games or say in OT in hockey are the type of games that the pain hangs with me for awhile. If the Brewers were in game 7 of the World Series i'd much rather lose 8-1 than lose by say Hoffman giving up a 3 run jack in the 9th with us up by two runs. Yea it sucked that UW were shut out, but 10 minutes after the game i was over it. Had they lost late or in OT, i'd have been miserable. I was watching the game with a buddy who said the same thing and i don't buy it in the slightest. The Badgers were playing for a National Championship, something that all those kids dreamed about when choosing to play college hockey. They put tons of hard work in all year to get to that game. Now you want me to believe they weren't playing their hardest? I think if anyone said that to any of those players faces they'd be extremely insulted, with good reason. I thought what happened had absolutely nothing to do with effort and all to do with 1. Struggling with the speed of BC as did everyone else in the tournament 2. I thought going into the tournament that goaltending for UW wasn't a major weakness, but it wasn't a big strength either. Gudmundson didn't make a single great save in that game and let in two that bordered on being soft. Muse of BC didn't face a ton of shots, but he did face some high quality scoring chances by us and he saved each one. Flip the goalies and i can't predict the exact score, but it wouldn't have been 5-0 for BC that's for sure. 3. No luck. Sometimes in a game where you're getting outplayed, but not by a big margin before things get out of hand, catching a break can be huge. Have say a deflected shot up front find the net instead of going wide. On the Davies break away, the puck not jumping over his stick. I thought 30 plus minutes into the game, it largely had been evenly played, maybe a slight advantage to BC and only a 1-0 game. They had more shots on goal at the time, but we had better scoring chances IMO. The back breaker was the soft goal between the legs of Gudmundson that made it 2-0, then i think the guys probably got frustrated and scared. Once it hit 3-0, game was over and the final two goals came mainly from the Badgers playing desperate like pinching in on a BC power play. No question BC deserved the game and outplayed Wisconsin, but i don't question the kids effort in the slightest. Better execution and better goaltending won that game.
  5. That one by Kevin Mitchell catching the flyball on the run with his bare hand is a favorite of mine
  6. Losing say in OT would be far worse for me
  7. Yea i'm nervous also. Just really gotta avoid turnovers at the blue line where RIT can get odd man rushes out of it which they've thrived on.
  8. I know this isn't about who to bat where, but i wanted to comment on Gomez. Obviously the track record of Gomez at the plate in the majors is a big concern, especially his lack of ability to get on base. Mixed with he hasn't shown a lot of power to at least somewhat balance off the lack of on base ability, you end up with sub-.700 OPS numbers. That said, it sure is obvious to me now why Melvin and others in the league would still want to take a chance on Gomez. This kid is an incredible athlete that was rushed much to soon to the majors. He can absolutely fly, has great range in CF, and has a cannon at an outfield position that generally isn't known for big arms. He's not a toothpick either. With his frame, if he ever figures it out at the plate with the help of coaching, it's not hard to envision some power potential being there. MLB history is littered with socalled 5 tool guys that just never could put it together enough at the plate to have significant impact in their careers. It's why the Twins were willing to give up on Gomez. I was fine with the trade at the time while fully understanding that Gomez may never amount to more than a great defensive CF, but after seeing him these three games, i'm even more supportive of the trade because man this kid is such a talent. Rolling the dice on a young major talent is the kind of risk that sometimes small market teams need to make because if Gomez can beat the odds and eventually develop into a quality hitter to go with everything else he can do, that can then be one of those franchise changing moves that often are what push otherwise pretty good small market teams over the hump into a playoff team.
  9. Bacardi is so overrated. I love rum and have tried many makers, Bacardi for me ranks right near the bottom, even among cheap varieties.
  10. I'll never trust a restaurant or fast food place after i order something without onions. Verify with my own eyes always before putting the food in my mouth. I'll never play fantasy football again I'll never watch a Yankees/Red Sox playoff series again unless i have money bet on it I'll never buy seats again at Miller Park in areas of the stadium where the roof blocks the sun during sunny day games I'll never buy steak again at a grocery store if it's' for myself to eat I'll never again buy cheap commercial beer products like say Miller/Bud/Coors unless it's a party for others to drink I'll never sing karaoke again at any gathering regardless of how many people pester me to get up there and do it I'll never pinch pennies again to save a few dollars or even more on some item i'll have a long time to where a month later i wouldn't notice the money is gone anyways Last and most importantly, after some bad thing have happened on the health and family front, i'll never again forget what's most important in life and it's not how much money you have, your job, what kind of great possessions you have, or countless other things that many human beings put extremely high importance on, but can quickly seem much much less important if really bad things happen to your health and/or family. So never just take your health or family for granted and in the process let much less important things become more important to you than they really are because nobody is immune to having your world turned upside down in a blink.
  11. Even if they only had to put half of it in a pool it would help the massive gap. I'd be ok with that also because i don't have an issue with some teams having an advantage, just not such a huge advantage.
  12. When i saw the title of the thread, i was going to say the worst words you can hear are we put extra onions on your meal, then i read the posts in the thread. My good buddy has been unemployed for nearly a year now. He has got numerous call backs and interviews, but never gets the job. He's beyond frustrated and is now a mix of depressed over it and terrified that what if he finds no job before unemployment runs out. I know he's applied at hundreds of jobs and no luck. My uncle has been unemployed forever also, but that i love to see because he's a complete scumbag.
  13. Would have been even better with Gus Johnson calling the game, especially if that last shot had gone in. Man, if that shot had gone in, i wonder if it would have gone down as most replayed play in American sports history?
  14. So long as Beckett doesn't get hurt, the Red Sox incredibly vast resources can afford even if say he declines some the last two years of the deal. People when talking about the whole unfairness deal between printing presses teams and others often just mention about what happens in free agency, but cases like Beckett are huge also. They can afford to take this risk and extend Beckett because if it backfires on them, it will sting a bit, but will be far from a crushing blow like it would be to a team like the Brewers or other teams not swimming in cash.
  15. As high as concession costs are here, just imagine if you were in many other stadiums where they make our concessions look cheap. I don't have season tickets and only attend from 7-10 games a year generally. Because of that, if i go to games, i try to enjoy myself and not fret over prices. If i want something, i buy it even though i'm from from wealthy. That said, it is annoying somewhat to buy say a round of beers for me and two friends and the price is 20 bucks or more for three beers. I took my daughter and her boyfriend to a game last year. We sat in seats that were only 17 to 20 dollars each i believe, but between parking and all the money in spent in the stadium, i had spent about 125 dollars if my memory is correct. On the way out she wanted this Braun t-shirt and i was going to get it until i saw it was 26 or 28 bucks. I'm far from being cheap or a penny pincher type of person, but 28 bucks for just a nothing special t-shirt i had to draw the line at. I left that for her boyfriend to cover the cost. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif Maybe if they at least lowered the price for merchandise like say shirts/hats/jerseys etc, more fans would buy them in the stadium instead of buying them at a store for half the price.
  16. Geoffrion is certainly very worthy, but i think Smith should win the Hobey. When you look at the amount of points he has as a defenseman compared to others in college hockey and his vast improvement at playing defense outside of scoring, i think he should have won the award fairly easily. Smith has 45 points on the season and last year defenseman Matt Gilroy won the Hobey while only scoring 37 points. Smith finished 19th in the whole country in scoring, no other defenseman finished even in the top 50.
  17. When guys like Braun and others have signed these type of contracts early i their careers, i'm surprised they weren't able to get more cash early in the deals than they did.
  18. Well, maybe Edmonds will end up biting quite a bit into Hart's playing time, but Edmonds should never start when a lefty is on the mound because Edmonds has been miserable vs lefties from 2006-2008.
  19. Yea that would be kinda cool, the Smith brothers playing each other for a national championship. Would be rough on the parents though.
  20. I agree While he only throws his fastball in the 87-90mph range, it has to look faster because he has such good command of his offspeed stuff. I remember reading that last year Wolf only allowed 3 extra base hits to lefty batters and watching him pitch, i can see why.
  21. That was mainly because West Virginia is a very very good defensive team that forced Kentucky into mistakes, just as KU forced Cornell into tons of mistakes. WV has pretty much 6-7 guys that all stand 6-6' to 6-10' that all are long armed good athletes taught to played hard nosed defense by Huggins who always turns out good defensive teams. If say Kentucky had to face the Badgers instead, they'd have been able to get a bunch more easy shots because we don't have the athletes or the length that WV has. Plus, Kentucky simply had an unusually bad night shooting threes. They aren't a good three point shooting team, but they aren't a 0-20 three point shooting team as was the case until late, while WV shot better from three than usual. Another thing to keep in mind, Kentucky was a team full of freshman. Bo Ryan obviously has been fabulous for Wisconsin. The basketball history of the program was largely miserably before he arrived. That said, watching us play Cornell and Kentucky play Cornell was so telling. Cornell sliced and diced UW to death, but when facing the vastly more athletic Kentucky, it suffocated the Cornell offense that ate the Badgers defense alive. We regularly this year and in the tourney had Hughes/Taylor/Bohannon on the court together. None of the three is taller than 6'2, none are long armed, and none are super athletic. The only long very athletic guy who played fairly often is Evans. Wilson is athletic and kinda long for a wing, but Bo doesn't trust him so Jarmusz and his nonathletic self got those minutes instead. Once in the NCAA Tournament and having to advance multiple teams before reaching an Elite 8 or Final Four, it's just hard to accomplish that when in most games they'll face more athletic teams that often are also longer. It's easier to get away with those shortcomings in conference play and especially at home where the Badgers have been insane under Bo.
  22. That horribly weak goal that Gudmandson let in to make it 4-3 nearly made me throw my remote at the TV. If St. Cloud had come back to tie it and win in OT, i don't think i'd have been able to sleep tonight. We really outplayed St. Cloud by a significant margin, yet it was only a one goal game with 2 minutes left. The same was the case yesterday, neither game should have been still in doubt with 2 minutes left. Gudmandson is a decent goalie, but far from special and he's my biggest concern about possibly winning the national championship. BTW, i thought the refs were horrible tonight against both teams. It's tournament time, not some relatively non-important regular season game and i thought there were multiple very ticky tack slashing/interference calls that simply could have been let go. Let the players decide games and not turn them into a special teams fest. Plus, i understand the NCAA wants to protect the kids, but i think they've gone overboard and thus it's taken away to much of the physical play from the college game. Pretty much any really hard check where a player gets knocked down to the ice gets called a penalty even if it was a legal check. If there is a check anywhere near the boards and a player goes to the ice, it's not even a pretty much likely to be called deal, it's a lock to be called regardless if it wasn't in the back and a legit boarding call.
  23. What's his reason for think Gallardo likely can only have a short window of high level success? Being only 6'1?
  24. If we didn't have Zaun, i'd love this trade. I didn't realize Snyder was such a patient hitter until i looked at his stats.
  25. Thanx Bucky
