  1. It was a great series but I'm just getting sick of watching Clayton and Young... if I wanted to watch senior citizens play baseball, I'd head on over to the geriatric ward of a local hospital. While that's a tad harsh, we need to sit EY against good pitchers to get his numbers back to his career norms. Hard to convince anyone the 36 year-old still can play better than their guy when he's .250/.330 (unless that team is the Twinshttp://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif ) Also, does it really hurt anything to let Keith or even Cruz play SS once or twice a week. Maybe Yost hasn't seen the memo, but Clayton is a 650 OPS man, and will remain there until he gets even worse. Still don't understand the idea of these two playing on a rebuilding club. Even Ginter/Hall would have a chance at having a future. Royce/Eric have none, nada, zilch. Very short-sighted.
  2. On cue, Rivas boots the easy grounder. Thanks Luis.
  3. According to those that see him play a lot, Rivas is awful, maybe almost as bad as EY. His range is weak for sure, and I seem to remember seeing a lot of errors. As Robert has said a couple times, MIN is such a good fit for EY, it's all but guaranteed it;ll never happen.
  4. Most good college players take 2-3 years to reach the bigs. It seems that despite excellent D1 stats, he'll take that long or longer to make it. I doubt if Weeks faced a pitcher all season, maybe all career, that could throw any of his pitches over the plate at any time, in any count. Now, few guys at A ball can do this either, so I feel Rickie will be fine until he reaches AA. A decent comparison would be small college centers who have talent and are drafted by an NBA team...and then folks are surprised they struggle, especially on offense. Having never really played a man as tall as themselves or a fraction as strong as Shaq or Ben Wallace, it's tough to be the same player. But, eventually, many develop into good players. It's hard to believe Weeks will get on base 50% the time in college and then suck in the pros. But I don't think many will be surprised by slower progress than the normal #2 college pick.
  5. Anthony Gwynn is watching the game tonight with Ulice Payne. No sign of Tony Sr. Like me, he's probably loading up his brats with onions and secret sauce.http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  6. It's amazing Stietz appears to be stupid, baseball wise at least. 13 balks? I could pitch a few seasons as a RH pitcher, and I wouldn't balk that many times.
  7. I hope we try to deal our friend VDS, as Nance has been unhittable in Indy since right after he got there. Foster pitched well in MIL, except for that SL blowout, he had a 2.08 ERA, if I recall correctly. Shane and John could be an effective pair of cheap LH relievers for quite a while.
  8. There is not nearly enough Brewers' blogs and so hopefully this will be a good addition to Al's Ramblings There can never be enough Brewers' weblogs. I'll give you a plug on Ramblings ASAP, if half my audience visits, that'll be 3 visitors right there.http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  9. Yet, the Indy club misses Paul Stewart, apparently.
  10. I'd say St. Louis in '17, then retirement.
  11. Parra must have just missed, as well.
  12. I see nothing wrong with "budget" picks at all. They are a way to get players you like in your organization for far less than the standard rate. However, if you're just doing it to save money, and admit you are drafting an inferior quality of player, that's just more guys you will have to find in other ways...trades, FA's, minor league FA's, etc. If you're a team like the A's, should you spend $9 million to sign 20-25 draft picks, or draft "budget" guys and spend $5-6 mil more on ML payroll to try and win now? Tough question, with no easy answer.
  13. Adam Heether, drafted twice at Modesto JC, has the best raw tools on the 49ers roster. He is an athletic third baseman with an above-average arm, but might not have the power to play on a corner. He may be better suited at second, or even behind the plate. Adam was on ESPN last night about 2AM, and hit a HR in a college playoff game. I just saw him after contact and on the replay, but he looks to be a good athlete, still plenty of room to grow. Very quick bat, hit an inside fastball right down the LF line for a HR.
  14. Brian, have you received money from Ebay for using your link? With the way many people bid, I can't believe even a nickel per doesn't add up, if folks are using it.
  15. My memory may be hazy, but other than the fact he "claimed" to have made errors on purpose, i don't recall the Sheff years being bad. Many would say we treated him much worse than vice versa, especially doubting the fact he was hurt (X-rays later revealed a fracture).
  16. I liked Joe Lawrence's batting eye and ability to play 8 positions. Tony LaRussa would wet himself if he could get him, as the inability to hit has never kept SL reserves off the team.http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  17. Jsg, I'm on record as saying I'd rather have talented scum in the system than "good guys" with no future. I believe that is what was meant, all in good natured fun. Al
  18. Any 5th round guy who falls to the 9th is OK by me. Sounds like a LH bottom of the rotattion guy to me.
  19. Doubtful, as he'll have three days to report. They often take a day to visit family, as is the case when you get called up or get sent down as well. Funny, no one ever takes longer than the plane flight when they get promoted...http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  20. Yeah, that's Chad Green with three hits for Rochester, the failed Brewer #1 pick still hangin' on at AAA... And hitting .259, for that matter. He's a tremondous athlete, if he could just have an average OBP (.330ish), he'd be a cheap option as a reserve OF for a few years. However, he has had trouble even approaching that number.
  21. The knock on Murray was that he was a pure tools pick. He'll have several years to learn how to hit and field before we give up on him, I'm sure.
  22. As for OBP and other run-productive indicators, Melvin said, "while on-base percentage works" in evaluating some players, "it doesn't work for all players." In the end, it's just a statistical column for him -- one of many things they look at. This is from the ESPN article on Moneyball, and is a quote from the book.
  23. But MB, according to Melvin, OBP isn't that important for some players. Sigh.
  24. I'm now a huge Joe Lawrence fan. He can play all eight positions, and walks that much? I'd hand him a spot as my 25th man at the beginning of the Spring.
  25. Thank goodness he meets our model citizen standards. I'd hate to win with guys that I'd hesitate to take home to Mom.
