  1. you really don't like Angel, do you X? I highly doubt that Don Money compared Salome to Estrada, considering that Estrada seems to have become public enemy #1 in the Milwaukee organization. There's no doubt that Salome needs work defensively. However, he's still only 22 and it would be hard to claim that he needs a ton more work defensively than Gamel. I don't get why Gamel is often given a pass for his lackluster D while Salome is not afforded the same courtesy. As we see in the difference between Kendall last year and this year, sometimes catchers can make rapid defensive improvements. I think it's much too soon to write him off or say that LuCroy is better.
  2. Wow, I didn't even realize he was back in MLB this year. I figured his career was over when he missed 2007, I'm very glad to have been wrong. I liked him a lot.
  3. The radar of being on the MLB team at some point next season. Also, the top prospect radar, though that matters very little in the scheme of things.
  4. Well, Crow didn't sign according to BA. Supposedly Crow came down to a $4 million bonus demand, but the Nats wouldn't go over $3.3 million to get it done. Seems pretty stupid for the Nats to let a few hundred thousand cost them an excellent prospect, but I don't run the team. I guess they do get a replacement pick next year, but still.
  5. Angel has his OPS above Mat's as well, although in 150 less ABs (mostly) because of the suspension. He's having a very impressive season. Let's hope he can finish strong and get on the radar for next season.
  6. Where would Salome start? We already have trouble getting our backup catcher one start per month. How many would the third catcher get? I wasn't saying they would or should, I said it was a wild hope, just because I like Salome.
  7. My wife's uncle owns a grocery store (formerly in Milwaukee, lately in Madison) and he makes great beef sticks. They're so good that they've turned me off of beef jerky but he makes good jerky (and sausage and bacon) too. I've never tried Oberto. The packaging looks and the name sounds like dog food. I never knew it was for humans until recently.
  8. The mere mention of Selig's name fills me with loathing. I don't want to get into a big thing, I just wanted to weigh in. Not everyone in Milwaukee likes Selig, many hate him with a burning passion. In addition, a lot of people who don't hate him for Milwaukee-centric reasons dislike him because of the cancellation of the 1994 World Series, the killing of the Expos, the attempted killing of the Twins, the shady deals he engineered in Montreal, Florida, and Boston, and the even shadier loan he got from Carl Pohlad (the Twins owner). Then, there are traditionalists who dislike him because of the wild card. The lunatic fringe of traditionalists can safely be ignored, but the wild card does kind of cheapen the 162 (witness MLB not even bothering to decide who won the 2005 AL East).
  9. Sad to see Branyan DL'd. Hopefully he'll be back soon. Nix sucks, but maybe he'll catch lightning in a bottle. In 863 ML ABs, he's got a .273 OBP, .406 SLG. Maybe he's improved, but his minor league numbers don't really show it. I'd have preferred Dillon with Counsell moving permanently back to the bench (and I'm aware that Dillon hasn't been good in AAA). For a moment when I saw that Branyan was DL'd, I had a wild hope that Angel Salome would be called up and get a few starts over the next couple weeks. That would be fun.
  10. Terrible news. Hayes was one of the all-time great soul singers/songwriters. Check out some of the songs he wrote for Sam & Dave with David Porter. In addition to his great songwriting, he was a good pianist (along with Booker T. & The MGs, he was part of Albert King's group for the great album "Born Under A Bad Sign"). He also played on many other sessions for Stax. Some of his records released under his own name are classics. Hot Buttered Soul is one of my favorite albums and Shaft, though it's mostly instrumental, is also a great album. (As an aside, the Bar-Kays really came into their own on Shaft, they perform some of the greatest instrumental soul/rock ever on that album, only a couple years after most of their members died in that plane crash that killed Otis Redding.) Hayes also had a connection to sports, being a part owner of the Memphis Tams of the ABA for a couple years in the 1970's. In addition to that, he used to wear a vest made of gold chains, how can you not love a guy who did that? I'm sad he's dead.
  11. Arte (unless he breaks the bank for his switch-hitting HOF) It was Teixeira who got traded to LAA, not Chipper.
  12. In the latest Sports Illustrated, they talk about the top few free agents for next year. They don't mention the Brewers having any interest/chance to resign Sabathia or Sheets, which I can see. I hope they at least stay in the negotiations in case something crazy happens, but I think that's a legit opinion. However, Joe Sheehan (who writes for BP too and who is generally unimpressive as an analyst and insider) has the Brewers being the top suitor for Francisco Rodriguez. Now, I don't want to bash Frankie (I actually like him quite a bit) or get into a discussion about various declining rates of his, I just wanted to know if anybody else thought that was somewhat ridiculous. I would think that, if the Brewers want to spend $15+ million per year on a long-term deal for a pitcher, it would be for a starter. Or am I off-base with that opinion? It seems like Sabathia at 7 years $140 million would make more sense than Frankie at 6 years 100 million or whatever. Not because there's anything wrong with Rodriguez, but just because starters throw 3-4 times as many innings as closers and CC and Ben are probably among the top 25 best starters in baseball.
  13. If anything, I think 1st base defense is overrated still. People have turned around and started claiming that guys like Kotchman are well-above average players because they play good defense. The best SS in the world can't make up for a lost 20 points of OPS+ with defense, how can a 1st baseman?
  14. Mine is my old tagger name.
  15. I remember seeing that thread too, though I don't think it was an IGT because I rarely check those. I looked for it but I couldn't find it. I think fatterthanjoey was the one who thought of it or was at least involved in the discussion, you might try PMing him.
  16. Someone can like bands that are at Lollapalooza (though I agree that some of them are crap (esp. Kanye West)) and also unironically enjoy some 80s bands. I like the cover album Poison put out last year, it's pretty fun to listen to. I'd never heard of Rocklahoma and looking at the lineup, it doesn't seem that great, but it's nice for some of those guys to be able to make a little money. There are only a few artists that I consider so offensive that I then think less of someone for liking them (Pat Boone, Michael Bolton, the Eagles, Lauryn Hill, a couple others that I can't recall right now). That's a joke, I don't really think less of someone but I will make fun of their taste in music.
  17. I'm glad he's playing. Not so glad that Counsell is playing, but whatever.
  18. where do you see anyone using "psycho babble" to say anything? I think you have become too dogmatic in your insistence that a manager means nothing besides putting a lineup together every day. Obviously a manager is far less important in baseball than a coach is in basketball, football, soccer, or hockey, but it doesn't follow that there is no effect. And just because an effect is not easily discernible doesn't mean it doesn't exist. You are probably right in that any of the various splits that people mention about Yost (or other managers) mean very little or nothing. However, that doesn't mean that there isn't one that does tell us something. I think it's unfair to expect random people who post on a baseball message board in their spare time to be able to put together a peer-reviewed academic paper on the effect or lack thereof of baseball managers. I understand that just stating opinions is not very intellectually rigorous. However, you are basically doing the same thing, so the superior attitude becomes a bit off-putting. Maybe I just failed to see your posts where you proved that managers are irrelevant. edit: I should add that you are one of my favorite posters.
  19. They said in the JS that Lawrie won't play pro ball this season, which is a shame, but I guess that's to be expected after playing for the Canadian National Team. I was hoping he'd at least get some time in the AFL, though perhaps that league is too advanced for a guy right out of HS.
  20. Here comes more Prince hate, which I would say is premature at this point. We don't know what happened, though Prince shouldn't have reacted that way.
  21. I much prefer Branyan and when salary is considered, I prefer Kapler too. Catalanotto's good, but not good enough to justify wasting $4-6 million on next season, imo. They'll need that money for pitchers and arb increases, not backups. For that same reason, I doubt Counsell returns.
  22. what happened in 97? Did the Brewers switch their affiliate midseason? Did they have 2 affiliates in the Pioneer League?
  23. It seems like you're implying that "disagreeing" would equal "bashing". No, I used bashing because the original poster didn't really say anything that could be disagreed with in a conventional sense. He just asked what the record was and said it seemed like the Brewers lose some nationally televised games. However, I know there are a certain amount of people who take offense at anything that is mentioned about Yost's record in various games, so I was just warning the poster. It can certainly be debated how much effect a manager has on a team, which is why I find it somewhat ridiculous that any time someone brings something about Yost up, other people are waiting to pounce based on the idea that managers have no (or little) effect. If managers have no effect at all, why do teams ever bother changing them? Why do they even exist? Is it just tradition? Because they do, in fact, exist, I think it's legitimate to ask certain questions and have various debates/discussions about them.
