  1. eh, I don't mind this that much. I like reading the old stories about how umps would fistfight with the players and stuff. I'm pretty sure this has happened before. Hopefully the ump is ok, but I don't think it's the end of the world. It is just like Reilly to make a big deal about something like this, which is why I dislike him so much.
  2. I don't think the Mets would do this. Even if we say, hypothetically, that Fielder is better (I'm not saying he is), the Mets don't have any reason to trade a guy who is as good and popular as Reyes. I mean, Reyes is a guy you build around, not trade. Just like Jeter or Ortiz or Chipper Jones may not have ever been the best player in the majors, that doesn't mean you trade them if they are very good and also popular. There is something to be said for letting your fan base root for more than laundry.
  3. the difference is that the players have a union and intrinsic skills. High-paid executives often get little perks (mileage to and from work, free lunch in the cafeteria, etc.). Your kid doesn't have the bargaining power MLB players do.
  4. Speaking of Bill Hall, did anybody notice during the no-hit portion of the game yesterday when Schroeder said Ned would normally put Bill in for Russ for defensive purposes? Is that really why Ned has been putting Bill in at the ends of games? I figured it was because lefties were pitching. Russ has looked a bit better on D than Bill has so far, although he may not have as much range.
  5. Why would the fans care so much about seeing Mussina? They could see him anytime. It seems like overreaction. I would have been a little disappointed if Jose Hernandez didn't get into the game at Miller Park, but I wouldn't have held a grudge against Bob Brenly for over a decade and make him out to be Pol Pot Jr.. Could Gaston have thrown the locals a bone? Sure he could have, but Ripken was already in the game, it's not like the Orioles had no representative. Plus, Mussina wasn't anything special that year. edit: In my opinion, what Mussina did was practically unforgivable, to show a guy up like that and make it into such a big issue. I doubt anybody would even remember it if not for Mussina taking it upon himself to take center-stage. If I was Gaston, I would have called time, went out to the bullpen and dragged Mussina by the scruff of his neck back to the clubhouse.
  6. No, I don't care about the blue, you just made such a nice case for why it was an important move that I was momentarily taken aback.
  7. Are you being serious? I assume that that should be in blue, but maybe not. As for Fasano, I wasn't even aware he was still around... ahh- I see now that he was putting up a .597 OPS in Richmond. I bet Victor Martinez is miffed they traded for such a superstar to take his at-bats.
  8. Shouldn't the shirts/large fonts say "Mussina Sucks"?
  9. I saw some young woman at the game on Sunday wearing an official Dillard jersey that looked tailored to her. I assume that must have been his wife/girlfriend, otherwise there is at least 1 huge Dillard fan that will be disappointed by this.
  10. Nick Leyva is their new 3rd base coach.
  11. about time Gaston gets another shot. He may have weaknesses, but two Championships is something not many guys have on their resume. also, it's nice to see the Brewers sending the manager of another team to the abattoir. That's domination (or, the Jays brass thinks so little of the Brewers that losing 3 to them is unacceptable, which is less flattering).
  12. however, now I realize that that could mean nobody throws him an actual strike ever. I feel stupid now.
  13. I saw different numbers then. I guess this is why this kind of analysis is still in its infancy, the numbers don't even agree with each other. Oh well. I just thought it was interesting that Vlad only sees about 10% of his strikes looking, but overall sees a league average % of strikes.
  14. There's a beaten path in Sheboygan? (http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif I kid, I kid)
  15. The difference is that Vlad rarely strikes out, hits for a higher average, and takes more walks than Braun does. He has a much better eye than Braun, and correspondingly a better chance of making contact. Vlad swings at literally almost every pitch in the zone, but few (despite his rep) outside of the zone. Braun is more indiscriminate in his hacking- he doesn't wait for a strike like Vlad does. also, I don't think Braun's having a great year yet. He's doing very well, but a sub-.900 OPS from a left fielder is hard to characterize as "great", imo. His poor first month is still holding his numbers back.
  16. Look at Rickie Weeks's AAA numbers once. He has a 1.107 OPS there, mostly from when he was 22 (younger than LaPorta is in AA). Now tell me why we should be so confident LaPorta will be able to do what Weeks has been unable to do, which is translate minor league numbers to MLB. The obsession around here with dumping Prince is really starting to grate on me. One prospect finally pans out (Braun has panned out too, obviously), and we all want to dump him for more prospects. It makes no sense. Look at any top prospect list from 5 or 10 years ago. You'll see more busts than good players. When you get a guy who looks like he's very good, hang onto him and trade other guys. I just shudder to think of a scenario where the Brewers trade Prince for 3 pitching prospects from the Yankees, one of them gets injured, one turns into Dave Bush, and the other turns into Guillermo Mota, and meanwhile Prince is hitting 45 homers a year for New York while he and A-Rod take turns winning the MVP. I think that scenario is much, much more likely than getting the next Pedro Martinez or Randy Johnson.
  17. 2nd time. The breakdown for LaPorta is: RF- 60 games LF- 7 games DH- 3 games 1B- 2 games
  18. No offense, but I'm not sold on your "humble pie" theory considering the Brewers plucked him out of AAA in July of 2004 and then unceremoniously released him after his best season the next year. He was reduced to signing with Tampa for the minimum. Then, last year, he was released or traded for cash 3 times. Russ has never been some golden boy with an assured starting spot. He's always been a platoon or bench guy who has had a tenuous grip on a MLB spot. I think it's unfair to Russ to characterize him as being too arrogant, cavalier and uncaring in the past.
  19. wow... It's just getting crazy now.
  20. Bill Hall, who hasn't been a regular for a month and is in a horrible slump, would be leading the Jays in home runs.
  21. mediocre, I think, means more like average or uninspiring. I think that sells Tavarez short, he was legitimately bad. 10 runs and 18 baserunners in 7 1/3 innings.
  22. He didn't say the $60 million was an insult, in fact he (nor his agent) have ever said anything at all about any contract offer the Brewers made. He said he was hoping for a bigger bump in his base salary then he got after he hit 50 home runs, which I think is fair. If we as fans bash a guy anytime he ever gives an honest answer ("Prince are you happy with your contract?" "No."), why will they ever give honest answers anymore? I personally like when a guy lets his personality shine through. Unfortunately, I doubt Prince will be doing that much with the fans/media anymore after all the bashing he's taken over the contract and the vegetarian thing.
  23. I hate this pop psychologising. We have no idea how Prince was raised or what his father did to him. Some of the fragments we have heard are pretty bad though, so you judging him based on his not getting along with his father is bizarre. I remember seeing an article that said Cecil beat Prince's sister in public when she asked him about the divorce. That alone is inexcusable. And revenge of saget, how is it obvious that Prince wants out of Milwaukee? He may, but turning down a contract is not a reason to think that. People aren't obligated to take whatever someone offers them. They can hold out for more if they want without it meaning they don't want to work at the place doing the offering. Haven't you ever asked for a raise at work?
  24. Having Russ up sooner would have been nice, but this has worked out nicely for him. If he had been up already and gone 1-10 pinch hitting, maybe they keep Bill at 3rd for awhile longer rather than give Russ regular PT. As it is, he's getting most of the PT at 3rd. I dunno, maybe Ned wouldn't have let 10 ABs influence him... Either way, DHing Gwynn was inexplicable. Might as well have used Manny Parra.
