  1. Obviously baseball is a team game and any loss is not directly attributable to 1 guy (well, usually not). However, sometimes a guy does not earn the benefit of the doubt. I watch a ton of Mariners games because I like to have a west coast team to watch after the Brewers games are over. Betancourt is a horrible player who never, ever does anything other than the least that could be expected of a player. He's exactly the kind of player that leads people to hate pro athletes as lazy, entitled guys who don't care about anything but their next check. He's one of the few guys who fits that stereotype like a glove.
  2. This is hyperbole. He's probably not even the worst defensive Brewer 1st baseman of the last decade, Sexson holds that honor. And he was certainly on the other end of the height spectrum from Prince, which should show people that height is not necessarily that relevant to defensive prowess at 1st base. Jason Giambi was easily worse. Mo Vaughn. Paul Konerko. Regardless, the error was Betancourt's fault. Let's not let a discussion of Prince distract us from the fact that Betancourt's heedless lollygagging cost the team a game.
  3. I dunno, Counsell's Isolated Discipline is looking pretty robust.
  4. Anything by George Orwell or Evelyn Waugh.
  5. http://www.speedtest.net/result/1111571544.png I got comcast recently, I haven't been very happy with their cable but their internet (and phone) has been pretty good. I never ran the test with the DSL I had up until a few months ago so I'm not sure how it compares to what I used to have. This was tested wirelessly, I don't know how much of a difference, if any, that makes. edit: just tried it again and the difference was kind of large: http://www.speedtest.net/result/1111595834.png I almost feel like breaking out a cat 5 and seeing if it helps me cross the 25 Mb/s threshold. But I won't. Probably.
  6. I was very impressed with Jack when he was with Milwaukee and during his first year in Seattle. He seemed to make nice moves more often than not, which can't be said about many sports executives. However, he started to lose me this past season. Not so much because they had a horrible record or because of the specific stupid moves he made (number one being signing Griffey again for no reason) but because of how he reacted to them. There was a continual atmosphere of scapegoating in Seattle last summer. The front office did not handle adversity well at all and seemed to basically just thrash around randomly looking for people to blame. Perhaps it was not all Jack as the two executives above him in Seattle are notorious meddlers but it seemed as though blame was deflected at every opportunity. First Eric Byrnes was cut after making a stupid play. Then the hitting coach was fired a month into the season. A month after that Griffey was forced into retirement. A few weeks later, they fired their manager, pitching coach and bench coach, along with their sports psychologist. Keep in mind, this is all less than a year after these guys were all the toast of the town. A month after that, after the Lueke scandal broke, they fired their director of scouting, who was one of Jack's oldest friends. I just find it kind of inexcusable that the team attempted to blame at least 8 different people in very public ways for their disappointing season. It just cast a lot of doubt on Jack's long-term planning ability. A well run organization should be able to weather a storm or two with minimal scapegoating, especially when management should have been aware that the 2009 team played above their heads to some extent and that more improvement was not guaranteed.
  7. I found a site that lists recent purchase prices (on ebay) of that model. It's in Euros but once I converted it to dollars, it says the 50 most recent sales of the TC-765 averaged around $440 with a high in the last 10 sold of around $950.
  8. The Brewers wore that script on their away uniforms from 1978 until 1993. I never noticed it before but it appears to be the exact same font that the Bucks wore on their away jerseys from 1973-1976 (which happens to be my favorite all-time NBA jersey). The Brewers didn't use an underline at first but they added it in 1990, which made it basically identical to the logo the Bucks used. Weird. On the other hand, the Knicks used to use a version of the interlocking "NY" so maybe it's not that odd for teams from the same city to share logos. 11. I googled around and found a site where people have suggestions. Hope that helps.
  12. I have to say that this is one of the more intriguing thread titles I can remember seeing. I've never heard of a relish tray so anything would meet my expectations. You say the family expects olives. I know a lot of grocery stores have "olive bars", where they sell various olives by the pound. I don't really like olives so I've never looked real closely at what they tend to have, but maybe buy a few varieties from one of those and a couple jars of pickles. Unless they mean crudites like endaround surmised. To conclude, sorry they expect you to bring something you know little about. That seems kind of unreasonable.
  13. Link? (or is that not allowed for some reason?) I've been intrigued by this one, despite never having seen the previous version. The first ads made the film seem very serious but the new batch does seem to show a more comedic/light-hearted side of the movie. Are those aspects well-balanced? Because the latest ads have put me off a little with their tone.
  14. Bad move for the Pirates. Sure, he'll probably be around average for them, but what is the point, especially when they have other options for 1st already? I don't like it when bad teams sign random vets for no reason. Sign somebody good or sign somebody cheap, these half measures never work out.
  15. No, I've never heard of it. What is it supposed to be?
  16. Sweet souvenir. Probably the most memorable Brewers game in the past 20 years. I actually had to listen to it on the radio because I was in Indianapolis watching Valentino Rossi dominate fools but it was the most inexplicable move I can remember ever being made by a manager. I was shocked Yost lasted 1 more game after that display, I would have fired him between games of the doubleheader.
  17. Good for him, hopefully he does well.
  18. Inexcusable, if it comes to fruition. I would be upset even if this was a minor league deal. Oh well, why bother caring, I guess. Somehow Doug Melvin is making me more frustrated than Sal Bando or Dean Taylor ever did. Probably because those guys never did anything positive and were saddled with the worst ownership in sports while Doug has assembled a few talented players and is now busy wasting their careers. Melvin's tenure has been like on Christmas when you get a present from a distant relative and you unwrap it and it's a Walkman or something really cool but then you realize with a sinking feeling, "wait, this doesn't fit in with the lame presents they've given me in the past" and then you open the box and it's a pair of socks inside of the Walkman box.
  19. That was a horrible finale. It made me dislike all the characters except Darryl, Glenn and Shane. It also was totally pointless, we didn't learn anything we didn't already know. Why even bother having the characters go to the CDC? It was a poorly done and badly paced rip-off of that scene from The Road (the book, I haven't seen the movie so I don't know if it's in there) when the main characters find that bomb shelter and begin to hope again. The problem is, the whole thing was way too perfunctory and cliched and we don't care enough about any of the characters for it to really have any impact. Also, it was bogus the way Dale begged the one girl to come along and didn't even spare a glance for the other woman who had also decided to stay behind. I already hated the character of Dale (and the actor who plays him stands out as being the most awful actor in a cast that is not exactly brimming with Enver Gjokajs) but that really drove home the point. After seeing that finale, Darabont was right to fire the writers. Hopefully next season will be a little more consistently compelling.
  20. Why would anybody want him?
  21. No. If they wouldn't go 7 for CC, it doesn't make a lot of sense to go 7 for Lee, who is older and has a worse track record.
  22. Yup. You could, for example, give Gomez the job by himself like the Brewers did last season.
  23. Loney is a poor man's Overbay. It's hard to see how he would help replace Prince, except in the sense that he would stand in Prince's place in the field.
  24. Wow, that's a huge deal for a guy who's pretty old and not an all-time great.
