  1. I like the middle deal although that might be a slight overpayment. The last one, I can't decide. Vazquez used to be really good but he hasn't done much in the last 4 years. I think I would pass, considering the fact that Vazuez is making a ton of money. I would pass on the first deal as well, just because I don't think Griffer will keep up anything near this pace (it's his best season since 199http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/glasses.gif and because to okay a trade with the Brewers he would probably demand a contract extension (like Randy Johnson and Gary Sheffield got when they got dealt) which I don't feel would be smart of the Brewers.
  2. This is something that also causes me to dislike players. It's why I was happy when the Bucks traded Desmond Mason and why I'm not happy they are bringing him back. It's one thing to want to play, everybody should want to play. It's another thing to be so delusional that you seem like a total idiot (whether it's Mench talking about how he's gonna "pitch a fit" if he doesn't get a starting role despite being a below average hitter for a corner OF or Desmond talking about how he's going to score 20 per game and make the all-star team. Either of those things could theoretically happen, but they would be extremely detrimental to the team). Anyway, I like Mench a lot as a platoon player. I don't like him personally (because of the above reason) or as a starter.
  3. If he is indeed on the team tonight, congratulations to Manny. It's nice to see a guy like him succeed (by which I mean, a guy who had to deal with a ton of injury problems). If he's only here for the short-term, I hope he gets into a game before he gets sent back down.
  4. very interesting stuff, thanks for posting it Mass. (for those interested, the * denotes college senior)
  5. Good luck to you and your mom. Hopefully everything will work out.
  6. I think I would mind this, judging from the stories coming out of Arizona. Apparently Seitzer's approach is (to put it charitably) very unorthodox. The Brewers have had pretty good luck with hitting prospects lately, so I'd prefer it if they stuck with guys who fit their approach.
  7. Nice. I've never cared this much about a hiring of any hitting coach. I hope he does well, I've always felt he would be a great hitting coach (and possibly manager).
  8. It's not hijacking, it's consolidating.
  9. Too bad for Hafner and Ortiz that their careers got off to such slow starts. Both have still made plenty of money, but they have basically no shot at the hall of fame despite being top 5 hitters over the last 5 or so years.
  10. Hmm, so Cameron concludes that Ichiro is actually underpaid by the standards of free agent contracts. I would tend to agree with that (again, going by Soriano and Lee). I think this contract is pretty fair for all parties, although I'm sure the Mariners would have preferred getting him for 5/$80 or so. When you throw in the popularity of Ichiro both here and abroad, the deal is a no-brainer. If Ichiro's not there, nobody would have cared about the Mariners since 2003. Because he's there, they are still one of the glamour franchises.
  11. I wonder if they have a photo of Victor Martinez with his arms around CC Sabathia and Grady Sizemore from last night. My wife thought that was really cute, I could probably score some points with her if I found it.
  12. Both are excellent defenders, if I recall my fielding bible correctly. I don't think the steals are worth replacing a guy who is already good and giving up other assets. If we are going to empty the farm for some player, I'd rather it be for a legit star player, not a wannabe like Crawford. I just don't think the trade makes sense. If the Brewers want great speed and defense out of an outfielder, pick up Corey Patterson for peanuts from Baltimore and use him as a pinch runner. Or heck, call up Darren Ford on August 31st if speed is that big of a concern.
  13. I don't like the last deal at all. Jenkins is better than Crawford, let's just stick with him for now if the best we could get is Crawford.
  14. There Russ, I fixed the title. It seems like it's a done deal according to all parties, but I guess nothing is signed yet. Also, Al, how would Ichiro be overpaid by $10-12 million per year baseball wise? You're saying he is worth less on the field than Jeff Suppan is? I just don't agree with that at all. He's probably the best defensive outfielder in baseball and he's also a very good hitter (121 career OPS+ which is very OBP-heavy) and an excellent baserunner. He's legitimately a premier player and much better than both Lee and Soriano, who got similar deals this offseason.
  15. link: seattletimes.nwsource.com...iro10.html wow, what a blockbuster. I think Ichiro will age well, but it's still a bit of a risk to commit that much to a guy through his age 38 season. The Brewers need to approach their young guys with extensions that buy out some FA years like the Mets and Indians have done if this contract is any indication of the way the market is going. Also, what will A-Rod get? $35 million per?
  16. Some shows that I'm ashamed to like include: Family Guy American Dad Prince of Tennis Teen Titans Robin Hood (the new one on the BBC) Doctor Who (the modern ones, I've not seen the old ones) These are shows that I know to be lame or corny, yet I still enjoy them. As for Felicity, I like that too, but I'm not ashamed of that fact. I started watching it with the 2nd episode back in the day (98 maybe) when my dad turned me onto it (he never watched it though). He had read an article in the Times about how one of the staff writers got fired for pretending she was 19 when she was really 30. I even convinced some friends to watch it. My wife and I also have the DVDs of it.
  17. I like this deal alot. Salty should be valuable in some role, even if it's not as a catcher. Bush is good but not even close to irreplacable and the Brewers will have to thin out their starters via trade at some point anyway. edit: hmm, I just checked the numbers and Salty is not as overwhelming a hitter as I was led to believe by Braves fans. That said, I still like the deal, just not as much as I first did.
  18. Well, Prince got 3 and didn't advance to the 2nd round.
  19. Well, that's cool. I hope Prince can win the end of season award too. Braun should have a pretty good shot at ROY, but if Pence stays leading the batting race he'll be tough to beat (I'm aware that Braun's average is actually higher).
  20. I like this deal. I wonder if Baltimore would go for it? Like Brian said, it couldn't hurt to give Weeks some time in AAA to get it together, especially if the team can come up with an excellent replacement like Roberts. Remember that Roy Halladay was once sent down to refine his mechanics and came back better than ever. I think the same could happen to Rickie.
  21. I can never get the minor league audio to work. Maybe it's because I have a Mac. MLB Gameday audio is also a little screwy for me, so that must be it.
  22. Maybe not. Also, I'm not saying I think Balfour will be bad or anything, just that he possibly won't be nearly as dominant as he has been in AAA. Perhaps. However, I'm just curious what such a large leap in walk rate means. The difference between Cordero's minor and major league numbers is not nearly so dramatic. Turnbow's is almost as large as Balfour's but even his is not quite as extreme and he walked a lot of guys in AAA.
  23. Sorry, I wasn't clear. I know he hasn't been walking many guys, but part of that could be because AAA guys just can't identify his pitches. He's had good control in the minors in the past, but it evaporated when he got to MLB. The last time he was in AAA he walked 16 guys in 71 innings. He then proceeded to walk 35 guys in 65 ML innings over the next two seasons.
  24. I just saw the replay of this. Pretty cool of the Phils (and the umpires & Hawkins) to help out. Nobody would have bashed them if they didn't, yet they still decided to help. Could it end up being a chemistry-building moment for the Phillies? I'm not a big believer in that kind of thing, but it seems like the kind of team-building exercise they have you do at corporate retreats and stuff.
  25. How's Balfour's control this year? That was (fittingly) his problem when he was with the Twins. That's the only thing that would make me worry about him.
