  1. Good for Johan. I'm sure it's frustrating for a guy who is clearly the best pitcher in the majors to be on a team that doesn't seem to be willing to make the moves it needs to to improve. The KG situation with the Wolves is somewhat analogous. Players careers are finite, so I can understand where he's coming from. As an aside, if he stays healthy through next year, he is going to get paid. I could see him getting an unprecedented (for a pitcher) $200 million contract or more. Zito got $130 and he isn't nearly the pitcher Johan is.
  2. Yeah, Beach is joining the cast. SVU is one of my guilty pleasures. I started watching it because I liked Chris Meloni and BD Wong's work on Oz and Richard Belzer's work on Homicide. I don't like the normal Law & Order or any of the other spin-offs but I do like SVU despite some obvious flaws. I don't like either DA that much though.
  3. I think I'd rather just see what Joe Dillon can do. Kielty never developed like a lot of people (Billy Beane especially, seeing as how he traded Ted Lilly for him) thought he would. I guess that just happens sometimes. He could possibly be an ok bat off the bench for a team, but I don't think he's a great fit for the Brewers.
  4. That translates to about .275/.405 in MLB, which would make Brad one of the worst players in the majors. I don't see how you can say this. An .830 OPS in AAA for a corner-type is just not good at all. There are dozens of guys that hit much better that will never get a shot. A corner guy who is at the right age or above for his league really has to hit .950 or so (at least) to have any kind of realistic possibility of helping an ML team. The average corner outfielder (adjusted for Miller Park and the 2007 NL) hits .370 OBP/.465 SLG. for an OPS of .835. Brad isn't even doing that in AAA. Now greg's point about Brad's power coming back may make next year interesting, but as of now, he just doesn't hit nearly enough to be an ML option.
  5. I'm with you on that. That's the real surprising part of the move, imo. I figured they would just DFA or release him, not because he's necessarily terrible, but just because the other guys in the pen are all better than him. Weeks to AAA makes some sense, though I'm a little worried about his psyche while he's there. I hope he realizes that the team stilll has all the hope in the world for him. Dillon to MLB also makes some sense, as he has demolished AAA in his last few tours. May as well see what he can do. I hope he can play 2nd adequately, although if you believe Rickie's defensive ratings, a guy with 2 broken legs and an eye patch could take over and the Brewers wouldn't see much of a downgrade.
  6. Well, Rajai Davis is a non-entity, so I guess it's maybe not that stupid of a deal.
  7. Linebrink has been pretty bad this year, I'm not sure I really consider him a big move (although the Brewers gave up a lot). I think that trade is especially inexplicable now that we know what Gagne got traded for. Here's what Keith Law said about Linebrink: He doesn't even think the picks are a gimme.
  8. What? Hahaha. I have no idea what Pittsburgh is doing. The move makes almost no sense from their perspective, imo. They should be trading guys away for prospects, not acquiring old guys.
  9. If you're going to calll someone an idiot, don't use the wrong word in front of idiot.
  10. I've got both of those Antonioni films, but I haven't watched them yet. I don't know, I kind of have to be in a certain mood to watch foreign films, especially ones as highly regarded as those. Like you say, you need to really concentrate on them to appreciate them fully.
  11. Is it just me, or hasn't Piniero sucked for about 5 years now? He should fit in nicely in STL's rotation with Maroth and Reyes.
  12. Why do the Yanks want Betemit? I like him as a player, but he's strictly a right-side of the infield guy, isn't he? The Yanks have that side of the infield pretty covered. Maybe they'll use Betemit at 1st?
  13. No, he wouldn't. He's well-below average for a corner outfielder. He's having a fluky good year, but he's the same scrub he always was.
  14. I hope they don't give up CV or Parra if they make this deal. Those guys should provide several years of league average or (possibly much) better pitching for very cheap. That would be a bad trade, despite CV's struggles the last couple weeks.
  15. Arggh. I like the Mets and Beltran (also, I have Carlos on my fantasy team). It's good for the Brewers that they'll miss him, but it sucks that he's going to be out 2 weeks.
  16. I knew who started this thread even before I finished reading the title. You really love your classic film Robert, I always enjoy your posts on cinema. Too bad about Ingmar, but he seems to have lived a good life.
  17. No, he's not. He's not great, but he's about an average hitter for a 2nd baseman, a good defender, and he has ok speed. He's a useful player, especially when you consider that much of his OPS is concentrated in his OBP.
  18. Wow. I'm surprised the Rangers went through with it, but the package they got seems pretty good, if not great. This makes winning the division all the more important though, as the Braves will likely take the wild card, I would think. Tex is not as great as his rep, but the Braves have been terrible at first base so far this year.
  19. I agree with you, his range has seemed especially lackluster lately. It's hard for me to tell just how good of a shortstop JJ is. He seems pretty mediocre to me but a lot of people rave about his defense, so I don't know. Then again, a lot of people also rave about Jeter's defense, so maybe you can't tell by that either. Overall though, I don't think JJ's defense has lived up to it's pre-MLB hype. He was portrayed as being a Gold Glove-level defender, which to me means one of the top 4-5 defensive players at a position in the majors. I don't think he's been that, or even within shouting distance of that.
  20. That means three true outcomes. It refers to the walk, strikeout, and home run, which are the 3 outcomes that don't involve fielders, just the batter and pitcher. here are a couple links: www.baseball-reference.co...e_Outcomes www.baseball-analysis.com...icleid=724
  21. Do I think Yost tore into the guys today? Maybe, but who cares? If that worked, Bobby Knight would have 20 World Series rings. Will Prince ever get out of his mini-slump? Hopefully, but he wore down badly last year too. My theory is that it is because of the lost half year of development he got in 2005, when he was used strictly as a pinch-hitter for the last month and a half. Will Jenkins start producing eventually (every 2nd half)? Probably. He's hit much better in the 2nd half every year since 2003. However, at some point that won't happen and he'll be done. I hope it's not this year. Will Suppan come strong down the stretch? I don't see why he would, unless by "come on strong" you mean that he'll have a 4.5 ERA rather than a 5 ERA. His career first and second half numbers are almost identically mediocre. The more I see Suppan, the more I wonder how a good GM could have wanted to give him 1/7th of his available payroll. Too bad that the braintrust panicked about the injuries last year. Will Sheets return? Yes, but it won't matter much. Gallardo has pitched as well as Sheets and he's not going to be in the rotation when Sheets is back (a move I wholeheartedly agree with, by the way). The net effect will most likely be non-existent because the team will just be swapping it's 2 best starters, rather than demoting one of their worse ones to the bullpen.
  22. Assuming all the pitchers stay healthy through the end of the season (which is never a very safe assumption), I think the Brewers will trade at least 2 of Capuano, Bush, and Vargas, in order to open a spot for Gallardo and 1 for Villanueva and Parra to fight over. I would love if they could trade Suppan instead because he has by far the least upside (at least on a team with defense like the Brewers') of any of their 8 good starters, but they probably can't because of his no-trade clause.
  23. Why would you expect this? The fact that the Cubs haven't won in so long is no more relevant than the fact that the Brewers haven't been to the playoffs in 25 years. The players are all new, the coaches are new, etc. The Cubs are a good team, no matter how much we all might wish they weren't. They have some good offensive players and some good pitchers. What's more, they have some very obvious weaknesses that if they can shore them up at all, they should improve. The Cubs have been not just bad but horrible at 4 positions this year: catcher, shortstop, center field, and right field. Any improvement the Brewers could make is not so obvious. As for how someone can be down on the team, even if they are outperforming a person's expectations (as they are mine), it's because the Cubs gave them a chance to build an insurmountable lead and the Brewers have squandered it. Despite the fact that I thought that 2008 would be the team's breakout year, I stupidly allowed their hot start to give me some hope. Big mistake, as I should have known it would be. However, sometimes a person can't help but get excited.
  24. I just saw that the Cubs have apparently offered Pie to Texas for Gerald Laird. And I thought the Inman+ for Linebrink trade was bad. This Pie deal would take the cake. Teams have seemed reluctant in recent years to deal top prospects for scrubs (maybe since the Kazmir debacle in 2004), but the worm may have turned.
  25. That's a shame. He started out doing well for them, but lately his average dipped below .200. I hope he gets picked up by someone else. Despite his flaws, he could really help some teams. The Twins especially could use a guy like him. Platooning Russ and Cirillo at 3rd would probably give them a pretty cost-effective and good 3rd baseman.
