  1. I don't really like Monroe. He's not a very good hitter and he's a butcher in CF. however, if Detroit was just giving him away, might as well take him because he's better than Gwynn.
  2. Here's another cool site I found that has playoff odds. They have graphs and everything. link: www.sportsclubstats.com/M...ewers.html
  3. It would be nice if Melvin would have done us a favor and left him in AAA.
  4. wow. I'm sure Tigers fans are very upset.
  5. what happened to Billy?
  6. I don't see the Brewers lineup really having any openings besides possibly a new leftfielder (either a star to replace Jenkins or a new platoon-mate for Jenkins) if there are no injuries. That said, Durham is a heck of a player, and even with him being signed through next year, would be a nice pickup if Rickie has to go on the DL for an extended time. Durham is good enough that he could easily be traded in the offseason to recoup whatever the Brewers gave up to get him. He's getting old, but he's not so old that no one would want him for 2008.
  7. It's not like they usually need an excuse. Tomo is clearly injured. The fact that he has pitched at all this year is impressive. Doug (and all the other ML teams) must have known that he was pretty badly injured, which explains the tiny contract he got from Toronto.
  8. I could see them trading him because I'm pretty sure their GM realizes he's not as good as he has played so far this year. If somebody offered them a good deal, they might take it because of the "sell high" philosophy. I just hope the team that makes them a good offer isn't the Brewers.
  9. I don't like this move. Where does he fit? He's not better than Jenkins, Hart, or Hall, plus he's atrocious defensively. In my opinion, he's clearly having a fluke half-season. I think the Brewers, if they are going to make a move, should be going after a guy on the other end of a fluke year. That is to say, a guy who is doing much worse than could be expected.
  10. I'll rate them by what I feel will be their value going forward: Sheets Gallardo Villanueva Capuano Cordero Bush Suppan Vargas Wise Turnbow Spurling Dessens Shouse
  11. I don't like getting either guy. With Griffey you are buying way too high, as he is playing the best he has since 98 or so. With Millar, he just isn't enough of an upgrade over Mench to be worth the trouble, imo. Part of that may be because I hate Millar for some reason though, because he is a significantly better hitter than Mench.
  12. It's not a bad idea if he is available for cheap. The thing I would worry about is how he would take being a seldom used backup. I like Lofton, but he cost SF the 2002 World Series by refusing to be the DH, leaving a much superior defender (Tsuyoshi Shinjo) to be the DH. Lofton proceeded to butcher numerous plays in center that Shinjo would have made easily and San Francisco squandered their lead and lost the series. For that reason, I'm not sure if I'm in favor of getting Kenny, despite his skills. The Brewers already have one OF who is very unhappy with his PT (Mench), I'm not sure adding a second would be the best move. Now, if Bill gets injured, I'm heavily in favor of this move. Otherwise, I think it's too risky.
  13. maybe. It seems fishy to me that they wouldn't throw in a no-trade clause though, especially after Buerhle left so much money on the table. Even mediocre guys like Suppan are able to get no-trade clauses in contracts where they leave no money on the table, so why wouldn't an excellent pitcher who has played his whole career in one place and is leaving at least $40 million (I think he could easily get at least a 6 year/$90 million deal) on the table not be able to get one?
  14. This is partly (that is to say, wholly) due to a selection bias that many people have against guys that aren't huge fastballers. People (including MLB people) have in their mind an idea of what a closer should look like and don't like to deviate from that. Also, there have only been 3 long-term dominant closers over the last 15 years (Rivera, Hoffman, Wagner) and 1 of them hasn't thrown hard in years and another only has one pitch (a 93-94 mile an hour cut fastball). I don't see how that's enough of a sample size to say anything definitively. Plus, Villanueva can crack 90, he gets as high as 92 or so. And how can you say he doesn't have a "special" pitch? He gets Ks at a very good rate, which indicates to me that ML hitters seem to think he has one.
  15. This seems kind of like a strawman argument to me. Fans get upset/giddy at the performance of their team. It's natural, it's what makes us fans. No one actually believes that Jeff Suppan is a 2 ERA pitcher. Some of us do hope that through some miracle that will happen, and that is what is reflected in the kinds of posts/comments you are referring to. Conversely, it's easy (and fun) to complain about players when they are doing poorly. We don't have to keep a level head because we don't actually make the decisions about who to keep or get rid of. What fun would talking sports be if everybody agreed that guys who were doing well are going to do worse in the future and that guys who were doing poorly are going to do better in the future?
  16. Ryan Braun is 54th in VORP to this point in the season despite having less than 150 PAs. Some of the guys ahead of him (and many below) have 200 more PAs. Braun is basically exactly as valuable per PA so far as Barry Bonds (2007 version). His career is off to an amazing start.
  17. speaking of new HBO shows, is anyone watching "Flight of the Conchords"? I thought the first couple episodes were hilarious, but my wife only thought it was ok. Have any of you guys watched it?
  18. ugh, why did I click on that article? He killed his son with a move that thousands and thousands of kids have probably emulated in their backyards after he popularized it? That makes me nauseous.
  19. It's funny how obvious KW made it that he only wanted Buehrle signed so he could trade him for more in return. The Brewers even gave Suppan a no-trade clause and he has done much less than Buehrle has in his career.
  20. wow, I just noticeed this too and the old poster was also my first thought. I kind of enjoyed him even though he was very frustrating and judgmental. Actually, that might make him perfect for talk radio. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  21. I think it's a little too early to annoint Gwynn a great example of anything at this point. Too bad that Gamel and Salome are having defensive problems. I have to think their bats are ready for AA. Both are hitting A+ much harder than Braun did last year and both are younger than Braun was at the time. If they can just get to the acceptable level with their gloves, the Brewers may really have something with these 2.
  22. No, that's not true. You have to be able to get outs (especially strikeouts), and Villanueva can do that. There have been plenty of closers who didn't have great fastballs. That said, I don't want Villanueva in the pen beyond this year. He should be in the rotation in 2008, it doesn't matter who they bump.
  23. That's Billy Petrick. The article is about a different guy, a former Rockies prospect who is now retired and doing some part-time HS coaching.
  24. funny. I hear it may actually be a FCUK shirt, which is apparently some brand (French Connection UK). It's classless, but hardly worth an article or any outrage, imo.
