  1. I don't think the pen is bad. The only problem is that there are 2 (was previously 3) guys who Yost doesn't use in key situations (Shouse & Spurling). Despite the fact that they have nice ERA's, if they are replaced by guys he does feel comfortable using, the pen will be even better.
  2. Wow. Good luck to him. I hope they eventually find a cure/treatment for Parkinson's that can allow people with it to lead easier lives.
  3. I don't think that's the problem. I think they can afford to do that no matter where he is htting in the order because he is susceptible to it. He needs to change his approach (possibly including his godawful batting stance) if he is ever going to live up to some of those comparisons we heard when he was drafted. During a season may not be the time to do that though.
  4. Well, in his ML career as a reliever, he's struck out 7.9 guys per 9 innings. In his minor league career, he struck out 8.9 guys per 9 innings. His minor league K numbers are superior to Derrick Turnbow and Francisco Cordero's and his major league K numbers are not far behind (both of them are around 8.8 Ks per 9 in their ML careers). Villy is a strikeout pitcher, despite his lack of a devestating fastball.
  5. The problem, as I see it, is that Rickie is not aggressive until after he has a couple strikes on him. Thus, he strikes out on a lot of bad pitches. Here are the career numbers: Rickie swings at 18% of first pitches compared to a league average of 27% Rickie swings at 66% of strikes thrown, compared to an average of 72% Rickie makes contact on 74% of his swings compared to an average of 80% 34% of the strikes on Rickie are looking compared to an average of 28% 18% of Rickie's strikeouts are looking, compared to an average of 26% That tells me he takes too many strikes early in the count and then swings at too many pitches late in the count. He doesn't have the contact skills or the power (you need one of those) to succeed that way. I think he just has a bad approach. He needs to tailor his approach to better fit his abilities, imo.
  6. I have all the episodes cached on my TiVo, but I haven't watched the show yet. The reason I hesitate is that the reviews I've seen have been devestating. I gather that some people think Milch has become unbearably pretentious with this show.
  7. Hmm, seems an odd choice. Do they have someone in mind for the permanent job?
  8. I should add, I think Hanley Ramirez is the most egregious snub. He'll be around for a long time though, maybe next year.
  9. Nice, all 4 guys with a case (Hart and Braun don't have enough AB's) made the team. These idiots on Baseball Tonight are all up in arms about how Rollins is so great and got snubbed. For once Steve Phillips is the voice of reason and points out that Rollins is only the 5th best SS in the NL.
  10. This is bizarre, but "Grover" never impressed anyway. The M's are playing well this year, but they are outperforming their pythag by even more than the Brewers. Maybe he knew that and wanted to get out in case they collapse later.
  11. This was always a weird idea, considering that the only people who care about American football are Americans. I guess it was worth a try to see if they could build a euro-fanbase, but it seems to have failed miserably. IMO, they should have first tried to build interest in Canada, Mexico, and Central and South America, where people are in the same time zones. Obviously, those markets are not nearly as lucrative as Europe, but you gotta start somewhere. I would start a minor league with, say, 8 teams in the US/Canada and 8 teams in central/south America.
  12. edit: Peavey got it.
  13. I hope this isn't the case. Villanueva is the first young Brewer pitcher since Sheets who has actually come up and been effective. Plus, he's been a lot more than effective, he's been excellent. He's under control for 5 more years and is likely as good as Suppan is right now. At Suppan's rate, that's worth $50+ million. I don't see how they could get equal value.
  14. Miller loves to stick it to their loyal customers. I hang out with a lot of Mexicans, and most of them love Miller Lite (I don't drink beer, so I have no opinion regarding the wisdom of that). Yet, Miller Lite has come out with numerous ads over the years decrying the addition of fruit to beer, which is something of a Mexican tradition. Now they've even come out with a fruit beer. So, to conclude, Miller obviously feels that people are too stupid to actually care about what is being said to them.
  15. I don't recall that. He had an option, why would people want him to be cut? This seems like an acceptable trade, though the guy is pretty old for A ball.
  16. yeah, there is a good book about Darryl Strawberry and his high school team. It's called "The ticket out : Darryl Strawberry and the boys of Crenshaw". I highly recommend it, it's a compelling read.
  17. People are naming their kids "Camden" nowadays? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/embarassed.gif
  18. That's funny. Maybe there's a 12 year old Wrigley or Fenway coming up though.
  19. so, you'd want to give testimony before a foreign country's congress in a language other than your native one? I can't say I blame him for making sure he was able to say what he wanted. Plus, his ability (or lack thereof) has been widely lampooned ini the past. I remember Curt Schilling got caught on camera making fun of him at an all-star game several years ago.
  20. What evidence has there been about Sosa? And also, did it look like Alex Snachez or Juan Rincon or Matt Lawton were on the juice?
  21. condescend much?
  22. How do you know Griffey and Thomas aren't on something? That's one of the biggest evils of the steroid era in my opinion, the fact that people are condemned or praised based on nothing at all. That said, Frank has always been one of my favorite players. I love his batting stance. I'm very happy for him.
  23. Otsuka is a righty. I'd like Marte because I think he can be had for not that much. What good is he doing Pittsburgh? Give them Nix and a AAA reliever.
  24. I second the choice of Humboldt. Those are my favorites and whenever I bring someone from another neighborhood to them, they tend to agree. Sit between the Tennis Courts and the (larger) pond.
  25. It's an interesting question. Assuming that he stays a reliever for the rest of this year and is going to be a starter next year, I hope they keep him around 180 innings in 2008. He'll still only be 24, which is pretty young, and a 100 inning increase over the previous year would be too much, imo.
