  1. I swear I was just going to post a trade of this nature. Meredith would be a dream acquisition. Trading Gwynn to the Padres while he is hot is the best case scenario, imo. I don't know if the new regime over there would have interest though. Why would you want Bard or Bowen though? They suck offensively and the Padres are on pace to shatter the record for lowest percentage of base-stealers thrown out in a season.
  2. I guess I didn't realize that Jose F. Macias was with the Brewer organization.
  3. why doesn't he just do like normal skeevy guys that want to hang out with 18 year old girls and go to grad school for a few decades? Some of the grad students at the college I went to looked like they had been there for even longer than this guy has been at Whitewater.
  4. Well, hopefully people will go back to caring more about gas mileage than they do now, like they did back during the gas crisis in the 70s/80s. If consumers clamor for that, companies will put more money into developing such vehicles and we will all win. If cars needed to be able to get 50 mpg in order to be competitive in the market, I bet that car manufacturers would find a way to make that happen.
  5. 2005 was the only year since 2001 where he hit even remotely accpetably against lefties. I wouldn't want to bet on that happening again. I'd rather they platoon Jenkins with someone, it hardly even matters who. Heck, stick Graffanino out there. This infatuation with Gwynn is really crippling the team's construction.
  6. I'd rather not do this as I feel Crawford is overrated, especially as a corner OF. As a CF, he'd be OK, but he rarely plays there for some reason. Hall's career numbers are better and Hall gives you that added versatility. Crawford is younger, but only by 2 years. I don't think the upgrade in stolen bases would be worth the hassle and whatever else the Brewers would likely have to throw in.
  7. I thought Miller was the backup at 1st? He's the only guy besides Prince who has played there this year, at least as far as I recall.
  8. well, that's what I was curious about. From his site, he does claim to be earning credits though, so I guess they probably can't kick him out. Not that I think they should, I just think that from what I know about universities (having worked in an admissions office), they hate this kind of publicity. Universities do everything possible to graduate people as quickly as possible so that their overall graduation rates stay up. The U of Minnesota even closed one of their colleges while I worked there because it was too much of a drag on their graduation rates.
  9. I never heard of that guy. I wonder why Whitewater doesn't give him the boot? Maybe he withdraws from all his classes rather than fails them, or maybe he has like 300 low level credits.
  10. Byrnes is well below average for a corner OF and you are talking about giving up Hart AND and an arm for him? Even if it was a straight up Hart for Byrnes deal it would be terrible from the Brewers perspective.
  11. Here is the relevant Missouri Statute: I don't see how they even have a case against the bar.
  12. As many Brewer fans have noticed, one weakness of this year's edition is their collective on-base percentage. While several guys have ok OBP skills (Weeks, Fielder, Counsell, Gross, Gwynn), the rest of the team's skills at getting on are mediocre at best. JJ, Geoff, and Billy can only be counted on to be about average and Braun and Hart are pretty much the same kind of hitters as those guys at this point. Estrada and Mench are terrible at taking walks. So, in my opinion, any large improvement in that area will have to come from outside the organization. That leads me to Bobby Abreu, currently stinking out the joint in Yankee Stadium's right field. Abreu's power is eroding and he is hitting poorly this year, but that actually works in a team like the Brewers' favor. Abreu has the 38th highest on-base percentage in major league history at .409. That would look so good batting 2nd (or 1st) for the Brewers. Bobby still has that good speed that people like to see at the top of the order too. I think the Brewers should try to get Abreu now while he is hitting poorly and people are ready to run him out of New York on a rail. I don't believe he's close to done, he's just in a slump. However, because of his slump, the Brewers may be able to get the Yankees to either pick up some of the money he is still owed this season or take a non-entity in return. Abreu is making $15 million this season, and around $4 million of that has already been paid out by the Yanks this year, so he is owed around $11 million for the rest of the year. Then there is a team option for next year at $16 million or a $2 million buyout. I think Doug should be on the phone with Cashman trying to get Abreu while his value is this low. The Yankees may welcome a chance to shed Abreu's salary and/or get a couple prospects for their still weak farm system. I think that getting Abreu could be the kind of move that would really solidify the Brewers as a contender. Yes, getting him wouldn't ease the outfield glut, but he is a huge upgrade over any of the guys the Brewers have now.
  13. Percival can't pitch anymore, I would put money on it. Remember Robb Nen's comeback a couple years ago? Me neither.
  14. whoops, I thought his deal was for $5 mill per, which is quite reasonable, imo (especially when you look at what Counsell is getting). $8.3 per is probably too much for a team like the Brewers. He would be the 2nd highest paid player on the team. The no trade clause would be little problem though, imo. The orioles are atrocious and show no signs of really getting better anytime soon.
  15. Well, if he wants to "take care" of his son, he could maybe get involved with an anti-drunk driving or drug use campaign, rather than try to screw people who were just going about their business. edit: I should say that I could possibly see suing the restaurant as I do think that some states have laws where the servers can be held somewhat responsible for drunk driving, but suing the guy whose car broke down is what really turned me against Hancock pere.
  16. This is really messed up. Luckily, it will likely get quickly thrown out unless the tow truck driver was somehow breaking some law. The father is probably just trying to get an insurance settlement from the insurers of all 3 parties. Classless, imo, to try to make money off of your own son's tragically stupid death. I would obviously feel different if Hancock died through no (or little) fault of his own but he was obviously mainly responsible for his own death, so it just seems bad to try to get people who really had only a tangential connection to his death to take responsibility for it.
  17. Ichiro is supposedly having the best defensive season ever by a centerfielder, if the Brewers trade for him I would like to see him kept in CF. It would be lovely to get Ichiro, but I don't see him resigning in Milwaukee so I'm not sure trading for a rent a player would be the right move at this point in the Brewers projected success cycle.
  18. MacDougal is inconsistent and prone to getting rocked, but garbage in, garbage out. I wouldn't really mind that deal, though I might be a little disappointed.
  19. I like Mora. I would welcome a trade for him. He could be for the Brewers what Graffanino and Counsell were supposed to be, which is a very good reserve who can play all the positions (he's played at least 29 games at 6 different positions in his career, plus he could easily handle 1st). He's at an age where it might be best for him to go back to being a part time player. He would be a great fit, imo. He's a guy who still has an average bat so he wouldn't kill you if he had to play every day when someone got injured. I don't know how much I'd want to give up for him though. I'd balk at giving up Hart I think. Maybe Zach Jackson and Kevin Mench or Callix Crabbe or something along those lines. The Orioles would probably want more though. No interest in Castillo, he sucks.
  20. Why bother with Broxton? He's good, but he's already pretty established so he would take a lot to trade for, which is stupid for a team like the Brewers, imo. I'd rather keep Inman and try to package some lesser arms for a guy who is dominating AAA but isn't getting a chance for whatever reason (like Neshek a couple years ago). Plus, as some people mentioned, you could potentially put a guy like Inman or Vargas in the bullpen and get similar results to what Broxton does (maybe not quite as good, but then you'd still have both guys).
  21. I'm curious why you think he's that good. His results in the minors have not been great and, by all accounts, his stuff is nothing special. Contrast that with Eveland who has dominated various levels of the minors, has a much better repertoire and is younger.
  22. I think you are being premature here. Villy is quite young and it's still very early in his ML career. If Gallardo gets called up and put in the bullpen, are you going to close the door on the chance that the Brewers open a spot in the rotation for Gallardo? In my opinion, the Brewers see Gallardo and Villanueva as near future starters. If they didn't see Villanueva as a near term starter, why was there debate about sending him down to AAA so he could stay stretched out? Vargas, Bush and Suppan are hardly great pitchers, there will be plenty of room in the rotation soon enough.
  23. someone will pick him up to play somewhere, even if it's in AA rather than AAA. The bloom is off the rose though.
  24. milb.com has him slugging only a pedestrian .726
  25. I vote for this option. That might just be because I watched alot of Alay Soler's starts for the Mets last year, but the most recent Cuban imports have not impressed (Kendry Morales of the Angels also is bad). I guess Yuniesky Betancourt is a decent glove man, but this most recent wave has been lackluster.
