  1. This ump is really squeezing Braddock, at least it seems so on the broadcast.
  2. It's more the fact that Lawrie - remember he compared himself to Russell Martin - was initially very enthusiastic about playing catcher, and decided to quit the position after one set of instructionals, ostensibly not because it was too difficult for him, but because it was too much work. Now, why would a player want to be a catcher? A player with Lawrie's projected offensive tools would be a perennial contender for the all-star game. He could have been truly exceptional at that position. Obviously I don't know if the whole catching experiment would have succeeded, but it does bother me that he didn't try harder to shoot for the moon. This, coupled with a plethora of other negative comments about his work ethic, has me a little worried. DHonks, you're right about Gindl - and don't get me wrong, there's plenty to love about getting a mediocre starter. As far as Gamel, yeah I think there's no doubt the team has mishandled him. At the same time he's shown a penchance for getting injured at the wrong times, and he too has been plagued by whispers of attitude problems.
  3. It doesn't help when the defense gives them extra outs on a seemingly daily basis.
  4. Lawrie's work ethic again called into question. Gindl projects as a mediocre player, nothing more. No mention of Katin when discussing outfield prospects. Haydel, on the other hand, is mentioned in AA. Gamel hasn't taken what opportunities have been given to him. Farris is much more highly regarded than many around here would assume (except for John Briggs). Not any viable depth behind Prince Fielder at 1B. Sorry Koshansky et al. I do think I agree with you, Mass, subdued is too strong a word. Gord just seems pretty realistic in his assessment of things, it's actually kind of refreshing.
  5. Gennet sure has been impressive, hasn't he? At least offensively, sporting a slash line of .356/.438/.506. It's still early but with every at bat his numbers become more significant. Not too shabby for a high school player in his first run-through of full season ball.
  6. Periard with only one strikeout, but a 15-2 groundout/flyout ratio. Pretty insane, he must've had a killer sinker going.
  7. Hallelujah! But why don't they just cut him already?!?!
  8. Has anyone noticed how Dillard has been pitching in AAA? 6.1 IP/5H/0BB/5K before tonight. And tonight...so far, 4.2 IP/0H/7K. Maybe his new delivery is paying dividends?
  9. It sounds like you DO agree with TLB. He didn't guarantee anything with Cain, he simply made a comment about his ceiling. I don't think Cain will ever steal that many bases, but those other numbers could be very easily envisioned.
  10. Lawrie is a triple machine. Someone noted yesterday that Lucroy only has one K this season. Gindl has that very same amount.
  11. Yeah, it's much too early to be acting so devastated about this team. The Macha digs, however, are righteous.
  12. Yep, you can't have it both ways. How many times was Yost lambasted on this site for leaving Bush in too long?
  13. Too bad Weeks couldn't get that one in. I, too, have noticed Gomez's habit of flipping his bat, even on obvious fly-outs.
  14. Don't jump off the ledge quite yet, folks. Only been five games.
  15. This is ridiculous. Talk about not understanding what a sunk cost is. Macha reveals himself to be more ignorant with each passing day, of course Melvin shares the blame here.
  16. I don't know if I would call Wolf's debut "very nice," but at least he did keep us in the game.
  17. But who's to say that it wouldn't be doing even better with an increased attention to parity?
  18. I didn't see this posted anywhere, but I might have overlooked it. Nevertheless, more glowing praise for Cain, who looks to have an excellent comeback season. Willie Randolph also had some pretty impressive things to say about Cain. “What an at-bat,” Randolph said of Cain’s homer. “He’s had a few of those over the last couple days. He’s outstanding and he’s really starting to show his skills. (MLB VP of on-field operations) Bob Watson was here the other day and watched him take batting practice and said, ‘Wow, who is that kid?’ And you know Bob is a talent evaluator.” http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/brewers.html
  19. I don't thing it's as cut and dry as this. To say that "Prospect X can be presently quantified as $5 million" because that's what Victor Wang's analysis of the BA Top 100 lists tells us - that's not what I would consider a convincing analysis. Wang's research is interesting, no doubt, and it can be predictive, to an extent. But the Phillies have a great scouting department, and I don't think that this fact should be underestimated. Not to mention that I would argue that using the BA Top 100 list or the Sickels list as a base for your methodology...might not be the best way to do things.
  20. I guess I don't see how if you're a fan of baseball you can dislike the playoffs. Unwatchable? Some of the games in the past week have been classic.
  21. I do agree that J.J. got screwed. The guy was a stellar shortstop for the Brewers the last few years, an All-Star even. Now he has a poor 3/4 of a season and he's sent to the minors and punished by using service-time issues? It's a bad precedent to set. It's not like he's some veteran on the down-slope of his career, he's only 26. Sometimes players struggle, especially if their value is largely based upon slugging and not on-base skills. I'm guessing that Hardy's seemingly poor attitude contributed to Melvin's harsh actions, but still, it IS a harsh action.
  22. Great article. Nice work by McCalvy. "He has four pitches for the Major League level," said Fred Dabney, the fifth-year pitching coach at Brevard County. "He just needs to get more consistent with them. He could be quite a pitcher with the stuff he's been blessed with." And a 98 MPH fastball? Sounds good to me.
