  1. Seriously?Wouldn't fired butter just melt?I would imagine they're coated in something, maybe even a dough. I'm picturing a butter-filled donut hole. And i'm intrigued.
  2. I'm pretty sure Greinke is showing that they are completely relevant. 5 straight quality starts, 6 ER and 40 K. The results (ERA/RA) are finally starting to reflect what the peripherals have been showing all year. That wouldn't disprove my point at all. Like I said, he should be judged based on whatever his ERA/RA is at the time. If after tonight he has a 4.40 ERA, that's indicative of what he's deserved to be. His high BABIP doesn't mean he's deserved closer to a ERA in the high 3's. This is the 7th straight season he has a BABIP above MLB average. That's a product of pounding the plate. If he can have a good ERA this season with that style, then great. But fact is he didn't get unlucky to do even better because of a high BABIP.his career BABIP is like .310, and it has been pretty consistent around that number each season. Earlier in the season it was up in the .360 range, which is fairly significant. Earlier in the season nobody was saying they were happy with Greinke's results (i.e.the high ERA). What they were saying is look at his peripherals, they show he's a better pitcher than his ERA is showing, and over the course of the year that will normalize. That we could expect good things from him in the second half of the season, that his results in the future would be better than they were at the time. That's what is happening.
  3. Just about every defensive metric out there rates Holliday as a good OF. And all of them rate Braun terribly. As much as I like making fun of him for that nutshot, he's a very good fielder. One (really really) bad play has ruined his reputation.

  5. wow. i dont think theres any way they got him there. great turn by yuni....but wow.
  6. COBrewerfan would really hate all the rants and knee jerk reactions happening on that Cards message board. If we had a volume of idiots like that on this board, I would stop on this board. It is unbelievable. it's basically the JSOnline comment section, but with cardinals fans in message board form.
  7. And now Ed Sedar DOESNT send a guy home from 2nd? WHAT IS GOING ON
  8. Cards (3) 2-1 @Astros (3) 2-1 @Cards (3) 1-2 Pirates (3) 2-1 Dodgers (4) 3-1 @Mets (3) 1-2 @Pirates (4) 2-2 Cubs (3) 3-0 Cards (2) 1-1 17-11
  9. because josh wilson has a career .605 OPS?
  10. What a nice trade for the Braves. I've seen Schafer a lot this year, and while he's still young, he's a really mediocre player. On top of that they didn't give up any of their "untouchable" prospects...with the talent they have at the top of the system all of those pitchers they gave up are very expendable. He's exactly what Atlanta needs (Jason Heyward remembering how to hit the ball wouldn't hurt either)
  11. I'm interested to see what the cards gave up. Seems like the dodgers must have been asking for quite a bit (at least more than everyone expected) which is why Melvin moved on to Lopez/hairston
  12. Pence is good for an .820 OPS and an above average glove. A very nice player to be sure. But top 15? Give me a break. His numbers this season are being driven by a .370 BABIP. He'd still be having a very nice season with that number regressing, but the astros sold him at his peak and got a great return. Off the top of my head: Bautista, Ellsbury, Granderson, Hamilton, Cruz, Victorino, Stanton, Beltran, Braun, Holliday, McCutchen, Bruce, Upton, Kemp, C Gonzalez There's probably a couple more. If you want to take an old guy like Beltran out, go for it...just put a guy like Heyward in. Pence is very solid, and makes the Phillies a very dangerous team....but he is not a great player.
  13. Because he was pitching pretty well and the bullpen is stretched a little thin. Well, at least the most reliable arms (KRod and Ax) are...if the two of them are unavailable, getting three innings from the bullpen could be an adventure. nice game randy
  14. The economics certainly help, but you have to give the phillies a ton of credit for continuing to stock a farm system that allows them to make trades like that. It also helps when people think JA Happ is good.
  15. trade for adam dunn and put him in the of, move braun to third, and move mcgehee to second. master plan complete.
  16. Except all of Weeks' negative UZR came in his first 4 years in the league, and he has basically been league average for the last couple of years. Meanwhile, Lopez is aging and is on the downside of his career. Weeks is a better defender than Lopez right now. Lopez is only 30 years old, and the last time he played significantly at 2nd was in 2009, when is UZR was positive. I understand that Weeks has improved a lot defensively, but he still had a plus/minus of -11 last year. I understand that I'm using different metrics there....but each one tends to fluctuate year to year, and most metrics seem to grade both Weeks and Lopez as very similar and average defenders. Like I said in my initial post, most metrics give Lopez a slight edge for his career...if you want to say that Weeks is improving while Lopez is getting older, that's fine...but the difference will still be pretty negligible. Not saying Lopez is a world beater, or should be the answer to replace Weeks...but I don't expect much of a drop defensively. And TheCrew07, was "not sure where the 3 win difference is coming from" directed towards me? I don't think I mentioned anything like that. And for what it's worth, Fangraphs has plus/minus. It's under rPM in advanced fielding.
  17. Lopez is -13 in 2656 innings at 2nd. As a comparison, Weeks is -33 in 6271 innings at 2nd. So that's pretty much a wash, with a slight edge to Lopez. UZR/150 gives Lopez a small edge as well. So the defense should be about the same. For what its worth, Lopez is also an average defender at 3rd according to plus/minus and UZR/150. Basically as long as he doesn't play SS, he won't hurt the defense.
  18. Then compare them to Brandon wood in AAA at 23. I'm definitely not saying green shouldn't have been given a chance by now...but if he struggled mightily in the majors he wouldn't be the first guy to do so, and he certainly wouldn't be the last. He should have had his shot by now...but aaa success certainly doesn't always translate well to MLB success I get what you are saying. I don't think anyone here is trying to say that Taylor Green will have MLB success. I think everyone here is trying to say he should have been up to see what we have. I definitely agree with that. I just think that over the past few weeks the uproar around green has just grown and grown, and a lot of the posts I read kind of leave the impression that he's grown into this can't miss untouchable prospect. I more than agree he should have been called up by now, and if a trade isn't made by the deadline he better be on Monday.
