  1. i know it's extra depressing because it's the start of the season...but it's a 4 game losing streak. it happens. it happened to the '08 brewers 5 or 6 times, it happened to the giants multiple times last year, it happened to the yankees a few times in '09, and the phillies in '08, and probably to just about every team in every season. Not saying this version of the brewers are as good as those teams, or that I'm happy to still be looking at a zero in the W column.....but these streaks happen. the sky is not falling. yet.
  2. yea...he probably gets him without the bobble. still nice to see him actually get to that ball though (easy to kind of compliment him in retrospect, cause it didn't hurt the team in the end)
  3. they had pretty severe pull shift on for chipper. weeks only started about 2 or 3 yards on the other side of the bag. not trying to defend betancourt, because he does have very little range....but that ball just found the hole in the shift. i doubt any shortstops would have had a play on it based on where betancourt was shaded.
  4. i'm stuck in class all day...and i live in atlanta so it's one of the few times mlb.tv isn't going to pay off for me. if anyone finds a stream online, let me know. thanks! one win can go a long way for making everyone feel better about this past weekend, go crew.
  5. Well, whoever that person is was certainly helped by having a #1 overall pick (Price) and #4 overall pick (Niemann) along with the ability to trade another former #1 pick for Matt Garza. Obviously they deserve a ton of credit, high draft picks don't always pan out and theyve done well with guys like Davis and Hellickson a few rounds later.......but it certainly doesn't hurt to have high picks like that.
  6. farnsworth is a decent arm in the pen. and since they were trading with the royals, they didn't have to give anything good up.
  7. the past 4 years sanchez has had an xFIP between 4.14 and 4.25 with really high strikeout rates. Which is a pretty solid. For what it's worth his ERA has dropped every year as well. I wouldn't be thrilled with the trade because he does walk a lot of guys and I'd hoped for more out of hart....but he's a good pitcher. better than parra. doesn't look like it matters though.
  8. yea, i just read that too. twitter is blowing up speculating its for hart right now.
  9. the indians will not be better than the brewers next year. and i'm not even optimistic about the brewers.
  10. and allen craig in the outfield too. they have depth.
  11. they must think Jon Jay can give them pretty close to Ludwick's production. Jay, Rasmus, and Holliday is probably the OF of the future, so Ludwick wasn't going to be in STL much longer. With his salary probably getting up to 9 million in arbitration next year, he'd be tough to trade in the offseason. Agreed that Westbrook isn't quite equal return though, I would imagine the prospect has to have some potential.
  12. none of these were stellar longterm options in the vein of a guy like bumgarner, but for the sake of arguing: -Doug Davis totaled about 11 WAR in his first stint with the brewers. not bad considering he was paid just over $5 million total for those three years. -Capuano was close to a 2 WAR guy (almost 4 in 06) for cheap before he got hurt. Nothing to write home about, but thats a solid pitcher for a cheap price. -Dave Bush looked like he could be one of those guys after his first two years in milwaukee (3.8 and 1.9 WAR)....then all of his rates (K, BB, HR) went the wrong way. Obviously none of those players are great, but they each had a stretch of 2 or 3 years (again, i get that that isn't long term) where they pitched well and were paid very little. I think most people would agree that if the brewers can find some pitchers like pre surgery capuano or doug davis 4 years ago, it would be a great way to bridge the gap til the guys in the minors are ready in '12 and '13. Obviously I'm not happy with the way the team is built right now, and with the fact that it's static despite the deadline approaching. but im just pointing out that in the past Melvin has found some valuable arms through trades (plus sabathia's 4.6 WAR in 12 starts....but obviously that wasn't close to long term). Here's to hoping he can do it again, whether it's in the next 3 and a half hours, or in the offseason.
  13. i think the theory is that if we send them bush as well, then they will get an ok pitcher to fill out their rotation. Not sure how much I buy that, or that the giants will either....but they take the downgrade at the backend of their rotation (and their future) in order to significantly upgrade their lineup.
  14. Hart has 10 "just enough" homeruns this year. Same number as Joey Votto, and I don't think too many people expect a significant dropoff from Votto (I know they're far different players, but just saying). Prince and Rickie have 9, same as Howard and Zimmerman. Dunn has 8. I'm not saying Hart isn't playing way above his head (I'd love if we could sell high on him), but as far as "just enough" homeruns being used, there are a lot of established power hitters that are right up there with Corey in that stat.
  15. if we dont resign dunn (which would be a pretty big if), thats a HORRIBLE trade, because then we dont have any 1B next year (and fewer prospects out of fielder). Even if he resigns, it might not be a good deal. Better off flipping fielder for more players and trying to sign dunn in the offseason instead of trading for him.
  16. maybe they're trading chris davis to get wigginton/cantu. moreland plays first, cantu plays second....kinsler comes back to 2nd in two weeks and cantu shifts to first. makes sense to me. too bad, the rangers are a good match.
  17. http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=tBbouLF8jmXAKM3-UDTbAog&output=html That's a pretty nice spreadsheet from Cot's website. $25.538 million is committed next year (including buyouts) before arbitration. If all the eligible guys are offered arbitration (or agree to a one year deal), I'd put that number around $33 million. I could be wrong one way or the other, but either way the team probably has $55-60 million committed next year. So depending on where the maximum payroll ends up, I'd say $25 to $30 million. That's a nice chunk of change, too bad the options might be lacking a little bit.
  18. the braves probably did have genuine interest, and then i would assume melvin started bringing up guys like minor or delgado (as he probably should have) and the conversation ended. And my point on the Holliday/A's trade was that it's possible for teams to come out of nowhere (that weren't buyers at the deadline) and offer up some good players. Just that there are in fact more options in the offseason. Hitters can get return midseason as well, the cardinals gave up a really good AAA player in Wallace last year to get Holliday. I don't think Melvin is necessarily fixated on a guy with MLB experience, if someone like Wallace (except probably a pitcher) was offered as the centerpiece he could take it. It's a lot easier to know if a "close to MLB" player (like i think Melvin is looking for, whether already in the majors, or a AAA guy) is going to have an impact than a super talented guy in A ball.
  19. if ken rosenthal tweeted it, it must be true!!!!!!
  20. Maybe they want to be able to have that extra year to negotiate with Fielder on an extension, before other teams have a shot. Maybe they think they can make a run at it with him, and if they dont make it use two high draft picks to help retool the farm system. Maybe they trade him again at the deadline. The Rockies got a pretty nice player in Carlos Gonzalez (Huston Street was no slouch as a closer, although obviously not what the brewers would be looking for for prince) in exchange for Holliday's last year under contract. There are more teams looking to upgrade their major league talent in the offseason, and each of those teams has more flexibility in the offseason. I'm not advocating waiting til the offseason necessarily, but if the right deal isn't there right now, then that's what you do. I don't think by sweeping the reds they're going to just decide "thats it! everyone's off the table." If the giants called on thursday and said we'll give you bumgarner for hart and bush.....its a done deal. the problem is we're NOT getting a bumgarner or a hellickson for hart, even if we try to add in more. We're not getting a Minor, Delgado, or Teheran from Atlanta. I live there, I play fantasy baseball with braves fans, and they all laugh in my face when guys like that are brought up for Hart. Everyone has way too high of expectations for what the brewers should get back in a deal, so no matter what you're disappointed and critical when a) it turns out the return isn't as much as you wanted or b) no trade is made.
  21. Maybe i'm an optimist, but to me all that means is they're not going to sell just to sell. Like Sage posted above, Melvin is asking for what he thinks his guys are worth, and if he doesn't get it he doesn't make a trade. There's no reason to make a trade if the team is starting to play well and you don't think you're getting fair value. The brewers will have a lot more trade options in the offseason as well....it doesn't need to get done now. For the record, I wish that something would happen at the deadline that would satisfy everyone, but i don't see that happening. so i'm fine waiting til the offseason if that's the case. Plus (and I agree it's a ridiculous longshot to have any hope for the season) if you sweep the reds then you get the astros (twice), cubs, and dbacks for the next two weeks. Crazy things, like five no hitters in a season, happen sometimes. They're not going to make the playoffs....but it has been fun to have hope for the past few days.
  22. well, royals management can be pretty stupid and doesn't appear to have any sort of a plan in place, so you never know. Rumor has it they're very interested in Jeff Francouer and his $5 million salary.....so who knows?
  23. can't judge until we know who the PTBNL is. I dont think its Trout, but it could be the best player out of the group.
