  1. The defense is already accounted for, if he were an average defensive 3B the contract would be a huge steal. The contract is a pretty flat value, we payed about what he should be expected to do on paper, only he has a good bit of injury risk which probably outpaces any reward so it was a slight overpay.
  2. Yeah I can't see any reason to stick with Conrad over Green at this point.
  3. Keppinger is stretched defensively at 2B and 3B and is downright terrible defensively at SS. Which is fine for fill in work but not as a long term backup.
  4. Giavotella isn't really ready to start so I get this, I'd imagine they split time some. This is the kind of role that makes sense for Yuni, just a filler to eat up playing time to ease a young guy into a job. Stating this to the public right now just seems to put undue stress on the young guy though. I guess it is supposed to motivate him but I don't really care for it. I never really liked the way Yost handles things with the public though so this doesn't surprise me.

  6. To be fair Nishioka had a pretty terrible injury early in the season so not sure he is the best person to compare. Fukudome produced about what I expected against RHP but he never did figure out how to hit LHP. I don't expect much out of Aoki myself because MLB is a power and patience game and those aren't his strengths.
  7. Since the two options are club options I would be very happy with the Brewers making this deal. It is really a no downside other than injury move and it has a lot of potential upside if he starts to develop plate discipline or power. The only issue I have at all with the deal is that the arbitration system still undervalues defense so it might have been cheaper to go year to year just because defense doesn't pay the player at that age.
  8. Nobody said otherwise, it was a what if question.
  9. That is true unless Aoki looks horrible but even then they would probably bring up a prospect to do it. But the defense plays enough that he can do it for a week or two if need be.
  10. Well if Hart starts on the DL I have to assume they keep a RH OF on the roster. Hart being on the DL frees up an extra spot and they already said they would go with 1 fewer pitcher early because of the extra days off. I'm not sure who that hitter will be but I don't think they have to rely on Aoki as a starter. Gomez can start full time and Morgan vs RHP, they just need to have someone else to start vs LHP.
  11. Last year the stats say he was a 2.2 WAR player with more than 3 WAR coming from defense, so he was worth around $10M for one year from a pure stat standpoint. I agree that I'd take that with a grain of salt considering most of the value comes from fielding (some from baserunning). Over the past 3 years he has put up 1.1 WAR per year and has a UZR/150 of 5.9 which seems a reasonable number. He isn't an amazing player in any way but he has some value for sure. His strong defense makes this hard to be a bad signing and his offense does have at least some upside which could make it a good one.
  12. I wasn't really using defensive UZR here but even assuming that you do it would be talking 3 years of data which is not worthless. He is one step below an elite defensive SS and a bad hitter but still an above replacement level player, he is below an average player. That puts him at something like 0.5 to 1.5 WAR which is about where he has ended up so far in his career. Nothing misleading at all about it. You can't just stick your fingers in your ears and pretend defense doesn't exist so you have to find some way to assign a value to it. I tend to use a combination of stats, reputation and the eye test and they all point to him being a good defensive SS so I don't see any reason to doubt it.
  13. Yep. Betancourts ceiling is pretty much Gonzalez's floor. So yeah when Yuni has a good year he can match a bad to average year from Gonzalez, this isn't the same as saying they are basically equal.
  14. Pretty low risk move on the Royals part. He is already a 1+ WAR player from defense alone, if the bat comes around they suddenly get a big bargain. Obviously depends on the money.
  15. It really won't surprise me if the Cardinals finish under .500 and recent history has shown that world series winners don't usually do that well the following season. But these are the Cardinals, they always find a way to overproduce so I'm sure all the old guys will have career years and they'll storm into the 2nd wild card spot with 84 wins and somehow win the world series~.
  16. Gonzo - 5.1 WAR over 3 seasons. Yuni - -0.7 WAR. Yeah I can see how you can say they have basically been the same... I honestly don't expect much out of Alex Gonzalez this year and that is a big upgrade over Betancourt. I think the heavy use of the shift helped hide just how horrible Betancourt was defensively making his stats look better than he actually was. I'm not surprised at all that he signed as a backup because he hasn't been a starting quality SS for quite some time now. I'm also not surprised that only a bad team with two young mediocre MI signed him to be the backup and I fully expect him to be out of baseball within 3 years unless he can keep latching on with teams as a PH vs LHP and get like 100 AB a year.
  17. There is no way that the procedure is the only reason Braun won his case. The poor handling of the case gave the arbitrator the out he needed to rule in Braun's favor but Braun cast enough of a shadow of a doubt on the results that Das ruled in his favor. It isn't something as simple as getting off on a technicality or it would have been thrown out way before the deadline, Braun put the results in question and had the technicality and the two combined got him off. Hopefully we get to hear the full details at some point but the ESPN side of things are absurd and not the reality.
  18. I couldn't dislike a post more than this, it shows a complete lack of understanding about the reality of baseball. I don't mean that as an insult even if it obviously is insulting but this entire post is so absurd that it has no grasp in reality. Betancourt is horrible defensively and if anything the stats understate how bad he is. If they started tracking errors by giving them to balls that go right by a player that 90% of the fielders in the league turn into an out he would have had at least 40 errors last year and most likely 50+, it was just painful to watch.
  19. If he can put up league average defense he is a huge upgrade over Yuni even if he hits poorly.
  20. I doubt he takes a big discount to play with the Brewers. But I doubt that the large market team can offer all that much more than we can, the advantage that large markets have is insanely overstated at this point.
  21. Yeah I'm not a huge fan of his but considering how putrid our SS has been since Hardy left I'm excited to see an upgrade.
  22. Actually we don't know he tested for synthetic testosterone, we know someone who leaked info said it was synthetic but I haven't seen a single solid reference to it. We know that a sample that was handled poorly tested positive for elevated testosterone and it may belong to Ryan Braun assuming the 44 hours it disappeared didn't have any tampering or mislabeling. Basically we don't know anything. Gun to my head I'd assume he is guilty too but lets not pretend that we have any real info on this case, we have what the media has decided to spin so far.
  23. People who are going to be jerks will find an excuse to do it no matter what. I really doubt this is anything to worry about.
  24. I imagine Betancourt will play some 2B as well since they have a rookie slated to start there. Betancourt isn't too bad against LHP, maybe they face lefties 3 times a week!
  25. Gamel has to be the worst interview in MLB history, heh.
