  1. I consider our bench below average but a lot of it just depends on what Aoki is and how good Green plays. The rest of the guys are more or less useless to me, we don't really have anyone but Green that I would be excited to see PH at any point. Most teams at least have a couple of guys who would be viable starters in half of a platoon, not really seeing it with most of our bench.
  2. I'd like the bench a lot more if Aoki was a LH power hitting OF than basically another Morgan. We could really use some LH pop that can play OF and CI (and no Branyan can't play OF anymore).
  3. To be fair the Brewers almost always have good team health reports when BPro does them, they don't sign many high risk players. The medical staff is well respected and they have a mostly veteran pitching staff that is out of the injury nexus at this point. Marcum scares me a little bit because of the way he broke down in the playoffs but overall we have one of the more likely rotations in baseball to stay healthy. There will be injuries for sure but there is no guarantee that it will be worse than last season.
  4. On opinion we may be 5-10 wins short, on paper we most certainly are not assuming Braun isn't suspended. There is no reason this roster can't make a playoff push this year. But as someone else mentioned, this wasn't a 96 win team on paper last year either, it was more of a 90 win team that found a few extra wins. This year we are more like an 87-88 win team that has to hope to find a few extra wins again. There isn't an elite team in the division so it is certainly plausible that we could win it.
  5. I find it best not to try to read anything into this type of thing because you almost never have any idea what the truth is. This could mean a hundred different things and it is useless to try to read anything into it.
  6. Larry Bowa was just on the MLB network and said he thinks there should be a DH in the NL as well as the minor leagues. He is an old school NL type guy through and through but even he can see how bad pitchers batting is for baseball. Just way too many injuries for way too little gain in strategy. I really do hope it comes to the NL, i think it is probably one of the best things that could happen to the game. If an old NL style guy like Bowa can see the light i can only imagine the rest of baseball will see it in the near future. All it will take is one big name pitcher getting hurt while hitting to make it happen imo. The other sports have realized they need to change to protect the players, baseball has to follow suit since 10+ pitchers get hurt hitting/running every season. On a side note Eric Byrnes also mentioned that they should think about changing the rules for blocking the plate and home plate collisions and I think that is inevitable in the next 20 years as well. You have to do everything you can to protect the players and these changes are not really big deals. They are changes that 10 years after they are made nobody even thinks twice about because they really don't change the game all that much.
  7. I disagree with this, Burnett has way more upside than Zambrano for this year. Zambrano has almost no chance to be league average but Burnett still has league average peripherals, they just haven't translated with the Yankees and there obviously is no guarantee they translate with the Pirates though the park, division, defense and league make it more likely that they do.
  8. Cardinals won the world series but they weren't one of the best 5 or 6 teams in baseball. This is a much easier division to pitch in than the AL East and it should make a significant difference. For the first time in a while I think the Pirates have a team that could plausibly sniff .500. I think they finish higher than the Cubs and if the Reds/Cards/Brewers have significant injuries it is plausible the Pirates could fight for 3rd place. This is kind of like when the Brewers traded Sexson and just started to make the push for .500 to rebuild the fan base. Give the Pirates another 3 or 4 years and they might be contenders for the division assuming enough of their youth actually does well.
  9. Greinke knows that he had a monster 2nd half last year, I doubt he lets us get a bargain as much as I'd like to lock him up soon.
  10. Because it's always about the Yankees, Phillies, Red Sox, and the Angels. They talk about more than that on MLB network, they just always seem anti-Brewer. Was the same way last year with some of them saying we were a 3rd or 4th place team. They just know the stars of the team and ignore the rest.
  11. MLB network is pretty obnoxious the way they talk about the Brewers too unless it is one of the guys with Brewer ties.
  12. He has had one major injury that killed one season and lowered the value of another one. The small little injuries have still kept him at a 3.5+ WAR player. Like I showed in my post above if he loses 0.5 WAR a year due to age regression he still comes out a little bit of a win for the team. If he does suffer a major injury it is a loss but that is true of any player in the game. As for the April-May production, Wrigley is a big time pitchers park in those months which explains most of the slow starts and power tends to come later in the year which explains the rest. I would imagine it evens out a little bit in miller park. I don't see it as him showing up only when the games don't matter though because the years they have made the playoffs he still got hot later in the year for the playoff run.
  13. The rumor that the offense is going to be horrible because Fielder is gone are just complete exaggerations. All I've heard all off season is how the Brewers are the one team that is going to fall apart and I think it is because the TV analysts just haven't looked at the team.
  14. I think that article was just terrible. I don't think Aramis is one of the 10 worst deals though, it certainly isn't one of the 10 best either. He is likely a 3.5 win player when healthy so he'll give us 3, 2.5, 2 WAR or something around there. 7.5 WAR is worth around $37.5M. They pretty much paid him exactly his value. Even if we keep him the 4th year and he drops to 1.5 WAR that year isn't too bad. Obviously he could age better than -0.5 WAR per season in which case we gain value or he could get hurt and tank his value so the deal can easily go either way. I would have liked 3 years and like $32M myself but this deal is hardly terrible. Next add in the fact that we are probably a bubble team and the value of a win grows as you approach the playoffs and as long as we stay in that might make the playoff range he is the type of move that you can afford to overpay for.
  15. I think the peak of the bullpen is weaker but remember Saito missed a bunch of time, we didn't have K-Rod to start the year and Hawkins was more of a mirage than a good RP. Loe was much better once they had K-Rod so he could be used properly. I expect this bullpen to be a little worse than our peak from last year but much better than what we had the first half of the season when it struggled so much. I also expect at least one of the younger arms to come up and add depth to it. The big key is whether the rotation can stay as healthy as it did last year.
  16. To me what it means is Greinke is waiting until mid season to do anything. He wants to make sure if Braun is suspended and we struggle in the first half that we don't have a fire sale and blow the team up before he commits.
  17. Gonzalez and Ramirez combined average HR over the past 2 seasons is 38. I'd be pretty shocked if they didn't manage 26, that is most likely a significant upgrade in HR. Fielder to Gamel/Green could be a 20 HR drop though and if Braun is suspended we probably lose 10 HR so something like 160-165 HR isn't an unreasonable expectation. The defense should be better and the bullpen is probably better with a full season of k-rod so the team should give up fewer runs most likely.
  18. Just to be clear, Branyan can't really play OF anymore. If Braun is suspended he wouldn't have really done anything. His contact rate is even worse than it used to be and his ISO has taken a complete nosedive over the past 2 seasons (though it is still decent). His one role would be to PH against RH hitters and even in that role you'd probably usually rather have Green who actually might have more power than Branyan does at this point assuming those ISO's are correct. I would love to find a RH power bat that can play OF and 1B but Branyan doesn't do much for me at this point. I'd also love a backup SS so we don't ever see Izturis on the field.
  19. Branyan would have absolutely no role on our team. If we sign a player in his mold we would want a righty. It won't surprise me if he gets like 50 AB this year and retires afterwards. The power isn't what it used to be and he doesn't do anything else well enough to keep a job.
  20. History is blind. There could have been 10 cases over turned every season for the past 10 years and we would never know in theory.
  21. If we extend Greinke and if Narveson improves a tiny bit I'm not too worried about the future of the rotation. Gallardo, Greinke, Young guy, Narveson and then someone like Oswalt or Edwin Jackson etc as a free agent. Pitching isn't nearly as scarce as it was even a couple of years ago.
  22. I personally expect him to not only replicate 2011 but improve on it. I also expect Werth to rebound and help out some.
  23. I'm willing to bet Fielder doesn't earn 2/3rds of this contract by value btw. If this were the Brewers handing him this contract I'd be happy that we were going to be in contention for a couple years but I would be miserable knowing how bad the deal is.
  24. Jackson isn't an upgrade over what they already have. What he does add though is depth, which is something they really needed with all of those injury rehab guys. It won't surprise me if that team is in the wild card race, just need a few guys to step up and to stay healthy. Especially if they move to the 2 wild card system. I still think they are the 3rd or maybe even 4th best team in the division.
  25. You make his point for him since you missed the entire point of his post. It wasn't Sal Bando somehow dissing Molitor for just being a DH and thus not being worth real money because he was 'just a DH and not worth anything', it was him commenting that they viewed him as mostly a DH and that is what they were projecting him as.
