  1. If the Brewers should be sellers every year it isn't very likely they go to the World Series they might as well move the team. They are never going to field a team as good as the powers in the AL East, it just isn't going to happen. They have to hope to get to the playoffs and get hot, something teams accomplish all the time.
  2. There is not a team in the NL Central that has better than 87 win talent, the Brewers are on pace to win 85 games. They are more or less exactly where I would have expected them to be. One team in the central is going to get hot down the stretch and win it, no reason to think the Brewers are any less likely than the other teams.
  3. The Pirates should not be buyers, the Brewers, Cardinals and Reds should be without a doubt. You don't get that many shots at the playoffs and all of them are in solid position to make it and once you make it you don't have to be the best team to win it all. To be honest if the Brewers were sellers it would be just about the dumbest move I've seen in baseball, they define the type of team that has to go for it now.
  4. It would take probably at least 3 or 4 years for the road sample to actually be meaningful statistically. The NL central is full of 85 or so win talent teams though, I think most of us knew that going into the season.
  5. No pitching stat is perfect, but pretty much all of them are better than ERA or WHIP. The OPS stat is a little better but not a ton. The rotation has gone through a rough patch recently and the stats spiked, natural ebb and flow of the season. They'll get hot at some point too and look better than they are for a while I'm sure. Probably when we start playing some bad offensive teams more often again.
  6. Gomez is not a huge problem in CF, he is above replacement level even if he can't hit and doesn't seem to understand the game of baseball as much as my 10 year old. CF is a strength on the team if anything between Gomez and Morgan. The black holes are SS and the bullpen (and 3B if McGehee never improves I guess) and we already added to the bullpen, if we can add a SS we are really in business.
  7. Those are two of the most random stats you'll see for a pitcher over a small sample so I can't say they would ever worry me.
  8. It isn't a big hitters park. It is a good HR hitters park which plays into the teams strengths but overall it is pretty close to neutral.
  9. My money is still on the Pirates ending up under .500. The pitching just isn't there yet and the team is overachieving. Some team will step up and win 88+ games. Brewers are certainly as likely as anyone else to do it.
  10. I don't know but most likely whatever they do won't have a large impact, just like all the suggestions that say every move the team makes in every loss is a big mistake.
  11. Sadly that isn't even true, he has been every bit as bad as McGehee.
  12. There are so many useless players on our roster that I don't see a need to DFA him, but limiting his role is certainly a valid option at this point.
  13. I don't know how much leash you should give him but it seems like it has been long enough that moving him down in the order or at least subbing someone in once or twice a week isn't a bad idea. That is what most teams do with a struggling established players.
  14. Yep that is the quick and simple one I use. You need to contrast xFIP to ERA to see what the pitchers career trends are since they do control some of the "luck". Most pitchers end up pretty close in xFIP and ERA but some have significant splits on a regular basis. Even then it is hard to tell how much of that is team defense, park factors, weak hitting divisions etc. No single stat is going to work with pitching.
  15. And not correcting for HR/FB% which makes absolutely no sense at all, sorry I just don't like FIP at all so always gotta bring that up~. Either you try to get the luck/park/defense out or you don't, FIP is just an odd stat all around. No single stat works for pitching but I consider FIP to be one of the weakest of the bunch, its almost as bad as straight up ERA.
  16. Bringing him up and splitting time between them seems like a good option. I don't put much stock in half a season of stats though so I wouldn't just give up on McGehee either. He has always been mediocre at best when not on a hot streak, he just hasn't stayed not hot this long in a row before.
  17. Axford and maybe Loe are the only good RP on the team. Dillard has been good so far but not sure I buy it. Hawkins might be close to average at best, he's just had a lot of luck, Braddock has been pretty terrible on the year.
  18. I don't understand how calling Herrera more than a LOOGY, using Loe as the 8th inning guy when there are clearly better options, and categorizing Braddock as a LOOGY don't stand out as terrible decisions when it comes to bullpen use. I don't think we need to wait until August to say Roenicke has not used his bullpen well so far. Macha did a pretty good job last year with the bullpen with a lot of the same guys (a large reason I think because he didn't hesitate to bring Axford in in the 8th).Because there aren't clearly better options than Loe in the 8th and Herrera was more pitching to eat up innings than anything. Braddock hasn't really proven anything yet so cant' complain about his usage. Bullpen usage is one area I do think managers mismanage but it is also ones that fans seem to complain about even when it isn't wrong at all. Fans tend to want to judge the RP by 20 IP of ERA which is useless.
  19. I completely disagree. I'd say less than 50% of HR hit in baseball are this easily classified.
  20. He has done more or less exactly what I expected. He has a high total in one high random team stat (Wins) and a low total in a another highly random largely team stat (ERA) but neither of those are really useful for judging pitchers in a single season.
  21. Yost made much worse in game decisions than Roenicke and Macha completely lost his team. People keep trying to downplay the player management aspect but the in game decisions don't really change things all that much either. The difference between starting Kotsay in CF and starting Gomez in CF for 6 or 7 games is almost nil as well. Most of the things I dislike about him are the same things I dislike about every manager in baseball so hard for me to downgrade him much for any of it. I usually don't feel like smacking him upside the head every time he opens his mouth like Yost and Macha and his players seem to try for him, that is about all I can ask.
  22. If you are going to judge pitchers using ERA you will never be happy. It is just way too random over such small samples of innings.
  23. I'll give him a B. The team plays hard without a lot of distractions coming up and that is probably the most important part of his job. He could certainly make some better decisions here and there but the major flaws with this team are in the roster itself more than his mistakes.
  24. No he cant, he is possibly the worst bunter I have ever seen in my life. All he does is try to bunt while already running to 1st and fouls the ball off/miss.He used to be able to bunt, he seems to have somewhat lost the skill. He used to bunt for hits all the darn time for the Twins though.
  25. Losses are team stats. It is because his groundballs happen to all be right at guys instead of through holes, there is no reason to think Hawkins won't completely implode into a 3.50+ ERA at some point going forward, he has shown nothing good so far. If there is any positive to Hawkins it is that his control has been good and that is generally a recipe for success but when you can't get the ball past any bats all the control in the world isn't going to really help that much long term.
