  1. Probably both. He realized somewhat that guys like McGehee aren't viable for aggressive base running but we also had some good base runners hurt.
  2. He has been about replacement level which is better than I expected by a little bit, the margin between that and the worst regular SS in baseball is pretty small though.
  3. I expect us to go 1-2. As long as we aren't swept it is fine.
  4. With these small sample size stats the reality probably lies somewhere in between. The team is probably slightly worse than normal on the road and they have had variance make it look worse than it is so it catches the eye.
  5. I still don't have an issue with Counsell. Sure he hasn't hit this year but he isn't playing much and his defense is still top notch. He still is more valuable than Betancourt even while hitting .150 or whatever.
  6. McGehee has always been a pretty hot/cold hitter just like most baseball players are. It wont' surprise me if he has a huge hot streak here, then again it won't surprise me if this is just a 9 game fluke either. He most likely is whatever his career OPS is at this point, that is the only sample that is real.
  7. Also everyone likes to quote monthly stats for some reason and 28 fits into that category pretty well. If you want to know how good McGehee is at this point his career stats are probably the most accurate.
  8. They still have a chance, it just isn't a very good chance. Teams turn things around randomly all the time so how they have played this year means a lot less to me than how much talent they have and they have plenty of talent.
  9. The Pirates were never realistically in it and still aren't. The Reds could still factor in things but it would take a really strong hot streak to do it.
  10. Most likely the top team will be around 85-90 wins so it easily could be enough. It isn't a very good division overall and it has a good bit of parity in it.
  11. If I want to argue about results I probably wouldn't look at W or RBI or most likely even ERA, those are just way too heavily influenced by things out of a players control, in effect they become team stats as much as individual stats.
  12. This is probably partially true but part of it also comes from pitching for the worst defense in the AL and then the worst defense in the NL as well. There is no way he deserves a 4.40 ERA when his peripherals suggest a low 3, his career ERA to FIP/xFIP gaps are nowhere near that large.
  13. I like the moves we made during the season overall, especially since we really gave up nothing to get them. We didn't make any stupid moves and the moves we did make helped the team.
  14. I'd imagine he'd keep pitching the way he has and post a low 3 ERA like his peripherals suggest but who knows since ERA fluctuates so wildly over half a season. He has been one of the better starters in the NL this year even if the ERA is high.
  15. Pineiro is the perfect example, he had one of the worst seasons of his career and one of the best for the Cardinals. Lohse is the same way with a wild mix of good and bad. Suppan improved about as much as you would expect going from a hitters park in the AL to a pitchers park in the NL and then went to another terrible defensive team in a hitters park after leaving. Dave Duncan is a good pitching coach but he hasn't magically fixed every pitcher he sees like people tend to suggest. Jackson is the type of guy who is all over the place by nature so he is certainly the type that could suddenly find success for a year though.
  16. He hasn't really turned many pitchers around, he gets random good years from guys because they are a defense oriented team in a pitchers park but they never seem to sustain it.
  17. The Galarraga play wasn't even a bad call in real time, it was a close play because when the 1B caught the ball his foot wasn't on the bag so it was just a race and the ump got it wrong. This play was pretty bad though I guess the ump thought he missed the tag for some reason, seems odd since it was right in front of him... more likely the ump just wanted to go home.
  18. Quite simply my post was about understanding sample size. What someone does over a month or two in baseball really means nothing at all, it is useless.
  19. I'm pretty indifferent towards what we do with Counsell but Gindl's OPS since June 1st in the minors is pretty much completely irrelevant to the discussion and what Counsell has done over his last 35 AB has almost nothing to do with it either. Counsell had a positive WAR last year and is sitting right at 0 even with the terrible hitting line this year, he is hardly the problem with the team one way or the other. He isn't much of a solution either of course.
  20. "3. Packers / Broncos at Lambeau" This one confuses me, this is like the lamest Packer's game of the season, who cares about the Broncos.
  21. Park Factors are largely useless so I always have a problem with it too. Each park effects different types of hitters in a different way. Miller Park might be a hitters park for a slugger like Fielder but it isn't for a slap hitter at all. Petco is a pitchers park for a guy like Fielder but it was a hitters park for someone like Loretta who likes hitting in the gaps in a large OF. Not to mention they all work differently vs RH and LH hitters.
  22. It is a big deal for us as we generally take a family trip to training camp and that was in jeopardy if something didn't get resolved soon.
  23. There is no way to know any of these things. A large portion of the criticisms about any manager come from not knowing the full story.
  24. The Pirates were my favorite non Brewer team when I was growing up. They were my NL team and I always wore a Pirates baseball cap around. I feel bad that the franchise has hit bottom over the past few years and I'd love to see them do well. The truth is though that it isn't a very good rotation, just a collection of guys with good ERAs and mediocre peripherals. This Pirates team reminds me completely of the 2005 Brewers, a lot of young talent mixed in with some pitchers doing more than they should getting the team to .500 and setting up unreal expectations for the next season.
  25. I still would take the under on 81 wins for the Pirates. Easy schedule, massively overproducing pitching. I hope the team turns it around but I really hope they don't become buyers because it would be a mistake and hurt the franchise.
