  1. Before this mini hot streak Betancourt was 4th in the NL in outs made and I expect him to be right up there with the leaders at the end of the season. Nobody said he is going to hit .000, he is going to get some hits but when you don't walk and you can't keep an OBP of .300 it isn't good. He is a passable SS against LHP and just terrible against RHP.
  2. Because Fans say punto is a little above average and they say Betancourt is terrible? Just look at the fans scouting report. I've never talked to a fan who complained about Punto's defense until you brought it up. Doing an internet search I still couldn't really find anyone complaining about it, I mostly see things about him being underrated or being too bad of a hitter to play.
  3. Pitchers are streaky, he's not pitching well.
  4. Gallardo's average fastball was 92.6 last year which was a career high. Before today at least it was 92 on the year which is about his career norm.
  5. Yep, I haven't watched any games and I am just a slave to WAR, you got me. He looks like he has bricks in his pants, quite possibly the worst range of any SS I've seen play the game in the last few years (Tejada was equally as bad before they moved him). It doesn't matter how smooth he looks when he can't get to balls. His approach at the plate is pretty miserable so he doesn't pass the eye test for hitting either. Scouts, the media and stats all agree on what Betancourt is, the majority of fans also agree with it, there will always be a few people who take the contrary argument in any discussion and they are pretty much impossible to dissuade at that point. Can we at least stop trying to say that people with a different opinion must not watch baseball, that isn't going to take the discussion anywhere and it just makes you look bad to other posters. I've watched as much as 30 hours of baseball a week on a regular basis(unfortunately cant' watch it at work anymore so less these days), my opinions aren't formed from not watching baseball. Pretty much everyone who posts on here regularly at least watches most of the Brewers game if not a lot of baseball in general. Their opinions were not formed by not watching baseball.
  6. http://www.fangraphs.com/...p;season1=2008&ind=0 That is sorted by WAR from 2008 until today and people with as little as 500 PA. You'll notice pretty much everyone on that first page is either a young player who is getting a shot simply because of future upside or they are players who have lost their full time job. Betancourt is not really a full time quality player and I'd expect he has problems finding a full time job next year unless he improves this year.
  7. Just because you have an opinion doesn't make it right, especially when the overwhelming majority have a different opinion. Betancourt has been one of the worst full time players in baseball for the past 3 years, you can argue about this year all you want but the past 3 years it is pretty much the truth. Most players of his quality don't play every day or are young and get better with time.
  8. It certainly can't compare to AVG or RBI... But yeah OPS is overrated by a lot of people, it really isn't a magical super stat. Just funny coming from someone like that.
  9. I don't mind Axford against Votto, he hits LH really well and I just don't trust Stetter at all in general at this point.
  10. You can use other positions with adjustments as well and you can use scouting which generally says Punto is above average and no I'm not going to look at total zone because it is by far the worst fielding metric out there. When multiple sources all point to the same result like in the case of both Punto's and Betancourt's defense you can usually be pretty confident in them. But I don't think you really care about an explanation, you are just being snarky at this point.
  11. I definitely think a bad rotation makes your bullpen worse as well. I tend to think people underrate the impact of defense in general so I tend to think poor defensive players probably aren't as valuable as things like WAR suggest. It doesn't help that it is so hard to pinpoint the effects of defense.
  12. Punto is an above average defense SS, he would be an upgrade over Betancourt and would have fit ok in a platoon with Counsell but he hasn't played a full season at SS so who knows if he could hold up or not. Renteria and Cabrera aren't really full time SS at this point either, not sure they would be worth it. I guess I get why we went with Betancourt but I would have been working to trade for just about anything to upgrade the position during the off-season.
  13. If Braun played in Coors he'd have at least one MVP already though his defense in LF would look much worse in that park. That is a great park for infielders but it is a nightmare for outfielders.
  14. With Seattle he was still young with upside, with the Royals he was just a filler so they didn't really care. I don't really understand why the Brewers are playing him but I'd imagine he struggles to find a full time job after this contract is over.
  15. Gomez hitting in front of Braun limits his RBI chances and Hart isn't exactly a great guy for RBI chances either since he is more power than OBP. Someone is likely to hit 40 HR and odds are it isn't Braun since while he has a ton of power he is still more line drive oriented. AVG is the one he's probably most likely to lead in. Sorry I don't change my opinions just because a player is on our team, being a realist is some cardinal sin apparently.
  16. If a player got a BB every single time they got up to bat they would be the best hitter in baseball. I don't care if they never actually hit the ball, walks are part of hitting.
  17. My guess is at the end of the year he isn't tops in any of the 3 categories.
  18. He made three errors in a single inning, that makes it even worse.
  19. Starlin Castro with 3 errors in one inning in the Cubs game, I promise I won't complain about Betancourt's defense since it obviously could be worse!
  20. The Brewers are 3-14 against the Reds since the start of last year. Hopefully we can turn that around some because if we can't beat the Reds winning the division is going to be tough.
  21. Unless you correct his stats for park factor since they have a slow infield and a big time hitters park which inflates his WAR on both sides of the equation. Tulo is more valuable than Braun but it isn't as big a gap as people tend to suggest. At least it isn't if Tulo goes back to his previous stat lines, if he continues to hit 7-14 HR every month that is a bit different story! Tulo is basically the same hitter as Braun at home and 100 points of OPS worse than him on the road.
  22. Which is why you look at BIZ as well which says Betancourt is the worst defensive regular SS in baseball over the past 3 years, or you use the fan scouting project which says Betancourt is the worst defensive regular SS in baseball over the past 3 years. Now instead of even arguing how Betancourt has been apparently the attack is on the intent of what people are saying so I guess this is going absolutely nowhere. Yes I obviously meant that Betancourt literally can't make a play unless the ball is hit right at him and doesn't take more than 3 hops, there is no way I could mean hit right at him as in the ball was hit right where any player can make the play, not like that is a very common way to describe defense. The reality is the plays Betancourt have made this year are almost all plays that 99% of regular SS make as well, he has made maybe 1 or 2 really good play and he has let a number of balls get by him that a lot of SS can get to. Argue in circles all you want but at the end of the year he'll likely cost the team 1 win with his defense and his offense is pretty close to replacement level. To this day there are Mariner fans who argue with Dave Cameron saying he wasn't a bad SS, just because he doesn't kick the ball around and throw it in the stands doesn't mean he is any good.
  23. It is a hard thing to judge because Fielder has been all over the place but Braun is so steadily good. I think Braun will have a better overall career most likely but if I had to just rate overall what they have done so far I'd give the edge to Fielder.
