  1. Texas had a bunch of young up and coming pitchers, the Brewers completely failed at drafting pitching. If you want to blame anyone here I'd point my fingers at Jack Z and Doug Melvin, not Mike Maddux. An organization who drafts 2 viable starting pitchers in a 10 year stretch is going to struggle no matter what, no use in pointing fingers anywhere else. Also if you are going to point fingers at Melvin it should be for the drafting not the signing of old vets, the team really hasn't had many other options except trading for a younger pitcher with more time left rather than Sabathia. While we have developed some nice bats there hasn't exactly been a ton of depth in the system to trade for needs.
  2. I don't find the organization stuck in neutral, I just think a rebuilding process takes way longer than people realize. I didn't expect us to be a .500 team until around 2010 to be honest, things happened faster than I would have expected given how terrible the organization was 10 years ago. The Suppan deal obviously killed the team somewhat though, if we had signed someone like Lilly instead this team would be so much better off the last couple years. A lot is going to depend on what they do with Fielder, Braun, Weeks. The organization needs to learn how to develop/draft pitching, on base skills and defense more than anything. I do agree that we should trade Fielder, I think we should extend Weeks though and roll the dice with his health. Rebuilding an organization doesn't mean draft a few good young players and have them reach the pros and you are done though. Step 1 is getting some talent in the minors, step 2 is rebuilding the fan base and putting a competitive product on the field and step 3 is turning some of that initial talent into solid minor league depth so the organization can stay competitive long term. We are still in the middle of step 2 right now, the process is not finished yet.
  3. These things are more or less completely random.
  4. I'm more worried by his terrible game management than motivating the team or not. How he can go with Parra in that situation last night is beyond me. Why bring in a converted starter not used to coming in with inherited runner with the bases loaded in a close game, add in that he has a significant platoon shift and that he has control problems so is the last guy you want pitching with no free bases to give. I think CV should have been brought in, he only pitched 11 pitches the game before and only needed to get 1 out.
  5. I'd rather have 100 shutouts. No hitter's have never done it for me. Very few of the most impressive games I've seen pitched resulted in no hitters and some no hitters weren't very impressive games (one of Buehrle's comes to mind).
  6. Yost was probably the worst manager the Brewers have ever had when it came to bullpen management. He had other strengths but this was his huge weakness.
  7. Edmonds is now hitting .105 with a .454 OPS on the month. He probably should be playing a little bit less at the very least.
  8. They won't let him pitch a full season most likely so I doubt he makes any impact at the major league level.
  9. It is going to be all but impossible for Strasburg to win ROY though since they will shut him down early almost for sure and he isn't coming up until late already. I'm sure Strasburg and Chapman will get tons of buzz when they come up though. Jesus Montero is another guy who will get tons of press if he comes up since he is on the Yankees.
  10. Brewer RPs have an xFIPof 4.16 on the year good for 7th in the NL and a 4.30 FIP while carrying a 5.01 ERA. I'd say at least part of it is just a sample size issue with ERA, part of it is having a below average defense and part of it is having a bit of a flyball heavy bullpen giving up a few more HR than other bullpens. I'd expect over the season to see us at least average overall if not a bit above average if they limit the innings Suppan pitches.
  11. Baseballprospectus just ran an article of the most valuable players in 2009 with contracts taken into account. Looking at the list with only players with 6 years of service time which means no discount for being in arbitration Pujols was #1 even with a $15.8M contract. There were some interesting Brewers on the list. #5 was Craig Counsell. For all the flack Melvin took for bringing him back he has consistently been one of the best values in baseball over the past few years. #8 was Trevor Hoffman. If he were to pitch anywhere remotely close to how he did last year he would be a bargain even at $8M this season. Closers have actually become underrated by the fanbase most likely. #15 was Randy Wolf. I doubt he can repeat last season obviously but this was not a bad deal at all imo. #25 was Latroy Hawkins. There was pretty much no way that Hawkins was going to repeat what he did last year and I still hate this deal even though he made this list.
  12. I doubt Castro is in the race, it is pretty much Heyward's to lose. I don't think Escobar was really in the race either, he just doesn't do anything that looks impressive to the people who vote for these things.
  13. The bad strike call really sucks now, this game should be 3-2 with runners on the corners and no outs. Bad call very well may cost us the game.
  14. Most pitchers have lower velocity early in the season so I'd assume it is just normal.
  15. I really do not like Suppan being in the game here, this feels like a game we could 'steal' a win with.
  16. Weeks has been fine defensively at 2B and Zaun is not bad defensively though he can't throw to save his butt. But yeah McGehee has been pretty brutal so far this year and Hart and Braun are bad OF.
  17. It takes a really long time for fielding stats to become meaningful even at a team wide level. DER jumps around a ton for most of the season. I doubt the Brewers have a good defense but I don't think it is is terrible either, probably below average.
  18. I'd take 2007+2008 Suppan over 2007+2008 Zito. 2009+2010 Zito is another story. Zito was worse than Suppan those first 2 years though.
  19. It is a fluke more or less. He is pitching better than in the previous few years but nowhere near as good as his ERA. He has been the 4th best starter on that team this season. He isn't going to maintain his 0% HR/FB, his .228 BABIP or his 82.1% strand rate.
  20. I take no glee in Sheets pitching poorly, I just think people who criticized Melvin for not signing him this season are dead wrong and since everyone is so quick to pat themselves on the back and say Melvin is an idiot every time someone we didn't sign or traded has 2 good games in a row I want to make sure people see that this move probably wouldn't have worked out.
  21. I am playing against the team with Fielder on it in my H2H fantasy league, that almost always means a huge week from any Brewer. I'll go with him.
  22. The assests in the Sabathia trade might have got this done, nobody else we traded could have though. These types of players aren't easy to find in trade and we are still at the point where every prospect we have has a spot on the roster. LaPorta was really the 1st redundant prospect we've had unless you want to count Cruz. To trade for a Gallardo type prospect you have to give up a ton of value. We could have picked up someone like Edwin Jackson probably but then look at how that is going this year, the guy is a 4.25 ERA talent pitcher not a #2. If you look around the league most teams built their pitching from their own prospects, not via trades. If Melvin has been a failure at anything it has been in developing pitching from within.
  23. Not like Garland is really a better pitcher, he has proven that over his 10 year career. They are basically the same guy just Davis has given up a million weak singles this year and Garland pitches in Petco.
