  1. They generally put very little weight into defense.
  2. Jack Z is at fault more than anyone else. Melvin is a close 2nd. When you only draft 1.5 major league quality pitchers in an 8 year span it tends to cause problems.
  3. Seattle gets a a below average 1B which replaces their replacement level one and the Red Sox shed a little salary and gain some backup depth.
  4. Luckily I doubt the Cardinals will either. Wainwrights peripherals didn't match his stats at all last year and I think it is a stretch to assume Carpenter will stay healthy given his history. But certainly not good news when your prime competition signs a big name player.
  5. Olivo is also probably the worst defensive C in baseball. I'd rather have Zaun for 2.5M than Olivo for that price.
  6. The division is pretty weak this year, no reason we can't sneak into the playoffs with 1 more solid starter. The Cardinals won't match last year unless everything breaks their way again, the Cubs got another year older on an already old team.
  7. I'd take any 3 of those teams over the Royals if we were betting on teams to make the playoffs. All 3 of those organizations are set up very well in the minors and most likely would be competitive teams in the other divisions in baseball. A string of bad luck by Bos or NY and most likely 1 of those teams is the wild card. The Royals are just futile until they fire the GM.
  8. Cameron is their best OF so not sure why he would be the weakest link.
  9. That would just prove that Yost was ahead of his time!
  10. Nope, only low K guys who aren't extreme groundballers which fits Garland and Suppan. I acknowledged that Garland is younger thus better but we are talking about the next 3 years of Garland here. Garland age 26-29. 129 GS, 820.1 IP, 1.40 WHIP, 409 K, 218 BB, 91 HR, 4.41 ERA Suppan age 26-29. 129 GS, 818.1 IP, 1.37 WHIP, 449 K, 258 BB, 106 HR, 4.52 ERA That is about as comparable of pitcher as you are going to find in baseball over a 3 year stretch. I don't think Garland is an upgrade over Washburn or Davis and he is younger and probably wants a longer contract. His career 4.42 ERA probably sums up his talent level pretty well. He'd be an upgrade over Suppan and probably Parra. I'd put him equal to a healthy Dave Bush which we don't know if he is healthy or not. He certainly would be a fine depth move. The funny thing is people are complaining about these 3 when they are as good as any other pitcher on the market at this point. I would much rather sign any of these 3 than overpay Piniero. It is probably a wash between signing one of these and going with a Sheets/Bedard/Smoltz heavy risk guy. Marquis wasn't likely an upgrade over those 3 either. Lackey, Wolf and Harden were the 3 pitchers a cut above the rest and we got 1 of the 3.
  11. I think a lot of the Jack Z praise is going to calm down when the Mariners aren't a contender this year. The rotation is still a complete mess, the bullpen isn't that good. They gave up a large part of their young talent and the lineup still lacks any kind of power. He is going to look amazing compared to their old GM but that team is still heavily flawed and some of his deals haven't been that great.
  12. I predict the opposite, Lackey is unlikely to earn his salary at least long term. Maybe for just this year it works out. I also question calling Milton Bradley, J.D Drew and Jeremy Hermida CF quality defensive players.
  13. I like Garland the least of the three largely because he'll probably want 3 years. Davis and Washburn could probably be had for 2 years. I look at Garland and just think... Jeff Suppan Jr. He is younger so he is better but I don't want the 33 year old version of Garland on this team.
  14. Really depends on which park factors you use. If you take something like fangraphs which used a 5 year model then Arlington came out ahead of Wrigley. I'd be most concerned by his age and the fact he has never played full time until last year more than anything. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/pitcher-win-values-explained-part-six/
  15. I sure hope you are right. Personally I expect a line more like .280/.320/.360. It won't surprise me if Gomez out hits Escobar this season.
  16. Until they get a new GM that team isn't going to go anywhere. He doesn't have even a basic understanding of what makes a good baseball player. I saw somewhere where out of the 20 worst OBP players in baseball the Royals could have 8 of them starting at the same time next season.
  17. If you adjust Hardy's 2009 line to his 'expected BABIP' he has a .271/.344/399 line even if you just assume all the extra hits are singles. His BB rate actually increased in 2009 and his infield flies dropped a lot. He might not put up 2008 stats but he should be closer to 2008 than 2009.
  18. Kirby Puckett is probably one of the 10 least deserving members of the HOF though. I don't want to compound mistakes by putting in more injury guys.
  19. Raines, Blyleven and Alomar are no-brainers imo. The rest I could go either way on with Larkin probably getting my 4th vote. I'd probably say no to McGwire and Martinez at least on the first ballot. Defintiely a no for Dawson, McGriff, Galarraga, Mattingly and Murphy none of which are really that close to HOF worthy. Morris and Lee I can go either way but would take Lee before I took Morris. If Dawson goes in over Raines and Morris over Blyleven it will pretty clearly show that the entire system is a failure and needs to be reworked.
  20. Texas is a bigger hitters park than Wrigley and it really helps RH power hitters. Wrigley is just a weird park all around, a big chunk of the games it is an extreme pitchers park and a big chunk it is a hitters park, it is completely at the whim of the wind. Overall it tends to play as a hitters park but not as extreme as Arlington. It won't surprise me if Byrd sits at 10-12 HR on the year instead of the 20 he had last year and it wouldn't surprise me much at all if Byrd had a sub .775 OPS.
  21. I think they have been trying to do this and probably come to the realization that Hart has very little value.
  22. The Cameron deal makes this one look terrible, but that is mostly because Cameron is being underpaid. This deal isn't terrible but I'm sure they'll be regretting that 3rd year.
  23. I'd be absolutely shocked if Hardy isn't one of the top 3 or maybe 4 best SS in the AL this season. To me he is a no-brainer bounce back candidate. I think Escobar of 2010 is almost certainly a downgrade from Hardy of 2010, he might be an upgrade over 2009 though.
  24. Well that makes it harder then! I guess Suppan to the bullpen makes the most sense then but I don't see them actually doing it unless he is terrible in spring training or something.
  25. Suppan just isn't as bad as people try to make him out to be, he would be the #5 pitchers on the majority of teams in baseball. From his 3rd start of the season on he basically put up exactly the same stats as in 2007 and 2008, there was no big regression out of him last season. He gets way too much money but there is no reason to think he is finished or somehow significantly worse than he has been the other seasons for the Brewers. If we were to sign another pitcher I think Parra to AAA makes way more sense. Let him get his stuff together and then he can come up if Suppan or Bush stinks or someone gets hurt. I say that as someone who expects Parra to bounce back and post an ERA under 5. We got absolutely destroyed by not having depth last year and I don't want to see it happen again this year.
