  1. Silva isn't as bad as his last 2 seasons ERA suggests, he has that type of skillset that is going to jump all over the place from an ERA standpoint. Having said that this is clearly a terrible deal for the Cubs. Mariners have upgraded their team a lot but most of it has just been throwing money and prospects around without a clear winner or loser, this one they come out a clear winner in my book.
  2. He had 80 K and 74 BB. If you do something as simplistic as ignoring the first 2 starts of the year he had an ERA of 4.91 with 78 K and basically the same peripherals as the previous 2 seasons. Suppan isn't a good pitcher but he wouldn't be out of baseball if he had no contract. Heck, in the middle of the season he had a 25 start stretch of 4.32 ERA though my guess would be it was a lucky 4.32. I'd gladly dump Suppan if we had any type of pitching depth but we do not so I think we sit through another season of him.
  3. I know at least one of the systems showed Hall as one of the worst defensive CF in baseball the year he played it. So there is certainly room for interpretation on his abilities out there. Pretty sure plus/minus absolutely hated him out there.
  4. We most certainly have needed innings each of the 3 years Suppan has been here. When we signed him I said I understand why we did it and that we actually needed a starter, I just thought we gave him way too much money because of his peripherals. This team would be in a very ugly place if we hadn't signed Suppan and hadn't replaced those innings with another player though. That is the entire point of an 'innings eater'. Just someone to soak up some innings while your guys progress in the minors. What we needed most last year was another major league arm. Parra could have gone down earlier and stayed down longer. Bush could have gone on the DL much earlier than he did instead of trying to pitch through it. Suppan could have rehabbed longer before coming back after his injury. Just having another starter capable of coming up probably would have lopped at least a quarter run off our ERA if not a half run even if he just pitched at replacement level. We absolutely need another arm going into this year, even if it just a Mulder type that will give us uncertain results.
  5. But most of that isn't quality depth for 2010, it is more depth for 2011 or 2012. Narveson is the only guy i could really see being effective in the rotation in 2010 and I have my doubts about it.
  6. I disagree with this 100%. If Suppan were a FA he would sign for more than $1.2M with some team. He isn't a good pitcher but his value isn't negative either and the idea that they faked an injury has pretty much no merit either imo.
  7. Suppan is better than people are giving him credit for in this thread. He still isn't good though. I would rather walk into opening day with Suppan as the 5th starter than say Narveson though. We need more pitching depth, not less of it.
  8. That would make the rotation look a whole lot better if he is healthy at all.
  9. Not to mention they don't lose pitchers to injuries while they pretend to be hitters. That alone would drive me to work in the AL.
  10. He is also directly to blame for the poor state of our rotation right now due to his lack of success at drafting pitching. If I'm going to blame any single person for our current problems i put the blame squarely on Jack Z. Melvin or Attanasio is #2 depending on which one pushed for Suppan more.
  11. The only reason I think they are a contender is because I think it is a weak division. The Cards are relying on a pair of pitchers who have a lot of injury question marks and the Cubs just don't seem that good. The rest of the teams in the division look to be weak or at best .500 style teams.
  12. They aren't bad at it. Baseball like everything else is extremely high variance though. You never know when a pitcher is going to go all Ryan Dempster on you or a hitter pulls a Mark Reynolds. The 'career year' effect.
  13. Parra also had an xFIP of 4.64 last year. There is a reason the projection systems are still pretty positive on him. He obviously needs to walk fewer guys to ever find real success, dunno if he can do that.
  14. I sure won't be expecting much after 2 years of injuries and considering how little room for error he had given his skillset in the first place.
  15. I'm not calling him a bust, I'm saying trading for a CF instead of waiting and going for a SP was a mistake.
  16. I'd rather have Cameron at $8M than Hawkins + whatever weak SP we will end up signing with the rest of our money. Though I guess because we messed up and traded for Gomez there just wasn't any room.
  17. I don't think it is realistic to expect Suppan to be the odd man out. If we were to trade for Correia I think it means Parra starts in AAA personally.
  18. I'd take the under on Suppan most likely. The over on Wolf. Bush and Parra are too much of a wild card. I mean Bush can easily put up an ERA under 4.29 but he has shown he can easily put up a 5 too. Chone projections can be found here... http://www.baseballprojection.com/2010/MIL2010p.htm Wolf - 164 IP of 4.17 ERA Gallardo - 145 IP of 3.60 ERA Parra - 159 IP of 4.75 ERA Bush - 161 IP of 4.64 ERA Suppan - 170 IP of 5.24 ERA Little bit more pessimistic obviously. I'd guess that comes out to like a 4.55 or so when you average it out, but I didn't do the math.
  19. This makes up for the Lackey deal, this is a complete steal.
  20. He's arguably the best pitcher in baseball, there is no other pitcher I'd want pitching for me for one game. For the next 6 years I'd probably have to take Lincecum because of the age.
  21. Thankfully we didn't get him, that would be a disaster contract for our team.
  22. Because Halladay is a better pitcher and because Lee didn't want to sign a contract extension would be my guess.
  23. Regret is to harsh of a term for a franchise like Boston that prints it's own money Unless he blows out his arm, Boston can easily afford players that under perform their contract numbers Sure they have an extra margin for error but if I were a betting money I'd take the under on Lackey earning $50M over the life of that contract. He is breaking down physically and has had his stats padded a bit by that park/division/defense.
  24. They will regret that deal. Makes me happier with the Wolf deal even if we did overpay.
  25. I hate that example as a "any one can get lucky" story. Anibal Sanchez was a really good prospect and pitcher. His career was derailed by injuries - it doesn't mean he was "lucky" to throw a no-hitter. Buehrle threw 2 no hitters, how is that one?
