  1. I don't agree with this at all, there is no proof Gamel couldn't hit well as a part time player.
  2. I don't really agree, I think people way overreact to this kind of thing. For every rookie that comes up and plays every day there are multiple ones that break in slowly and in this particular case we happened to have an unexpected breakout at the same position that partially blocked him. Now if we don't do something about it in the offseason then I think they screwed up, so far it just hasn't been that big of a deal.
  3. I'm not sure I can fully agree with this, we drafted the pitchers they just got hurt/high. Most of the pitchers we should have in AAA right now are not there for reasons ultimately out of Melvin's control. The biggest blame I can put on him is not trading for a pitcher of some type this off season, this year in particular it was clear we had no depth at AAA but it is hard to know if there were opportunities to do it. We have depth coming in a couple seasons so this is a minor window where we just have a positional weakness at AAA SP. I would hope he trades Hardy or Hart to plug it this off season.
  4. Suppan and Hall come off the books after next year so it is pretty plausible to think that not keeping Cameron could lead to a bigger pitcher being signed to a multi year deal. I just don't know that there is a good pitcher out there that is worth the risk this off season. I also can't stress enough that signing a pitcher isn't going to do us a lot of good unless we trade for some depth at AAA as well. Not having depth cost us way more than having a bunch of mediocre guys this season. Not being able to replace Parra and having nobody to come in when Bush/Suppan got hurt is what really killed the season more than anything. Maybe if we have some depth we don't rush Suppan back quite as fast or we don't try to let Bush pitch when he was obviously hurt after getting hit.
  5. I like him much more as a platoon/4th OF type. If we were to keep Lopez and use him in LF and insurance against Weeks staying healthy I wouldn't mind keeping Gerut as another layer of insurance. Then we can sign a riskier CF type like an Ankiel type. It all really depends on what we do with Lopez, Hart, Hardy etc. This team somehow suddenly has a good bit of depth at the major league level and it has another wave of position prospects due in the next couple years. Should be an interesting off season.
  6. Yeah and playing the D-Backs, Cubs and Astors helpWe stunk vs the padres, pirates and giants during the injuries and those are worse offenses.
  7. Amazing how much better the team looks with a healthy rotation, even if it is still ultimately a mediocre one.
  8. Takes a good 500 IP for ERA to really mean a lot and a good 1000 AB for something like AVG. So it isn't all that much different than offensive stats. In general you want 2-3 years data for a result stat to be meaningful. That is why you look at the peripherals which solidify with a lot smaller sets of data.
  9. Strike outs are obviously the worst result in the game overall but if you are going deep into counts and taking walks and if you are swinging hard and turning those hard swings into extra base hits then the strike outs that come along with it are not a bad result. A guy like Michael Bourn striking out a lot is just terrible, a guy like Fielder doing it isn't that big of a deal. So it isn't so simple as to say strike outs are bad, you have to take it in context of what you are getting with the strike outs. If Gamel walks more and hits for more power than McGehee then the extra strike outs just don't matter. It is too early to tell if this is true though.
  10. Sure but ignoring the fact the bad months were specifically related to an injury just seems silly. There is no reason to expect Bush to have an ERA over 5 next season given what he has done in his career. You just have to realize that all of these marginal types are going to see their ERA jump all over the place because it is just a very volatile stat. A 4.50 ERA true talent pitcher is going to have seasons with an ERA over 5 multiple times in their career.
  11. I don't really think Braun would be good in CF but I think he could easily move to RF if we trade Hart. I think Weeks would be absolutely terrible in CF so I don't want to see that experiment, he is fast but he loses concentration so often and just seems to be really slow at making adjustments in general.
  12. I wouldn't mind us bringing Lopez back and playing him in a utility type role. He can play 2B/SS/LF and we are likely to start the season with an injury prone 2B, a rookie SS and an uncertain OF.
  13. No, guys like Cody and Narveson replaced Bush and Suppan and that is why the rotation was the worst in the league. I don't know if we should pay Looper $6M or not, but his value is certainly over $2-3M on the open market.
  14. I don't know the specific players but there are a few guidelines I'd like to follow. Someone other than Kendall at C. Depth at 2B/SS/3B. None of our options at any of those positions have played a full healthy season in the majors except Lopez. We need to have significant depth in this area. Trade Hardy/Hart or whoever for AAA pitching. I don't care if we upgrade the front 5 starters all that much, it would be nice but I just don't see it being very likely. However we need to have real depth in place so when someone gets hurt or Parra struggles again it isn't a disaster like it was this season.
  15. We could afford to keep him around, we will choose not to because he most likely will be a DH before the end of his first big contract. I think he would have stayed a packer most likely, the team would have suffered in other areas. I enjoy football less with the cap than I did without it. If Favre wanted to switch teams he would have taken the same money the packers paid him or less and moved to a more competitive team. The fact we were winning and he liked it is why he stayed in GB more than anything else. If Favre were playing on the Lions and became a FA this year he would not go back to the team even with the cap.
  16. Not really, that is likely to just regress. I don't think he is going to be an .890 OPS player every year. I just don't think he'll fall off completely like Helms/Hall either. He has a solid foundation in the plate discipline areas that suggest he'll stay at least adequate with the bat is all I was saying.
  17. Nice graph Baldkin, pretty much shows what I expected. The top few teams still need to be toned down somehow and the bottom few need a leg up but the majority of the league is on a pretty level field. I don't think baseball is perfect yet but the balance isn't anywhere near as bad as people suggest either and I just don't think a cap is the answer, at least not an NFL style cap.
  18. Helms had a .780 OPS his 'big year' for us so not sure it is a valid comparison. His career OPS is .744 so not like the .780 was way out of control. He also had very ugly secondary numbers while McGehee is putting up respectable k/bb etc. Even Hall's big years looked extremely flukey, the one year was totally babip driven and the other was a huge spike in HR/FB that wasn't likely to be sustainable. I like McGehee's chances of staying productive better than Hall or Helms. I still want to give Gamel a chance though and I won't be surprised if this is McGehee's career year, I just don't think it is fair to pull out that comparison.
  19. Not saying it is revisionist history, I'm saying nothing that happened this season suggests you were right or that the Brewers made a mistake. You are being way too results oriented with it. Escobar didn't blow away AAA, there was no reason to think Hardy would have the year he has and one more pitcher isn't going to change how the season went overall.
  20. I personally think Escobar's upside is Andrus, that is the best he could do. He wasn't ready for the majors this year though so complaining about not trading Hardy is mostly just a hindsight move. If Hardy had repeated his last 2 seasons his value would be very high this year, there was no good reason to assume he'd tank this year. There was also no reason to think we had no shot at the playoffs going into the season, we just had a bad year all around.
  21. They wouldn't all have the chance to sign him for the same amount though. If a player were offered $5M a year to play for the Steelers and $7M a year to play for the Lions most of them would play for the Steelers. They can make a big chunk of that extra money back on endorsements, they would rather play for a winning team and being in a winning situation probably will increase the size of their next contract. The NFL is nowhere near as fair as you are trying to make it out to be.
  22. But they have done it with rosters that looked terrible for most of it. I remember when they made their run last year I looked at the roster and was like... this can't be a .500 team even, it is terrible. They faded last year some but I still feel they almost always outperform my expectations of the team.
  23. Kendall obviously isn't so good at game calling that he makes the pitchers better, they have in general performed below their career norms with him as the C. His offense is just terrible as well. I wouldn't start Kendall every day if he agreed to play for free personally, I think he is below replacement level at this point. We got a bit lucky that his defense was so great last year but seems like it was just a fluke.
  24. This pretty much sums it up but I'll add they understand the statistical side of the game better than most teams. They don't overvalue slugging and undervalue fielding like most teams do which is just huge. Duncan+LaRussa are also probably the best combo in the NL which is worth a few wins a year as well.
  25. I think you are exaggeration the reality of the situation with this comment. They at most will get 1 major league starter, the rest of the off season moves need to revolve around AAA depth. This teams rotation could easily have made the playoffs, look at the Rockies who had the same basic rotation as an example, don't be so darn results oriented.
