  1. Jeter was 3rd in the AL in fielding WAR by SS, only behind Andrus and Aybar who didn't play every day and are pretty young. Hard to complain too much about it with at least some statistics backing him up. The AL does not have very many good defensive SS right now. Edit for typo : I meant fielding WAR.
  2. Plenty of big free agents go to teams other than the Yankees so you are really overstating things. Salary cap would ruin baseball, better luxury and revenue sharing would be good though. I don't think we should overpay to get Lackey though. Pitchers are healthy until they are not and then they don't usually recover very well from it. It is pretty rare to see a pitcher who goes 200+ IP a season who gets hurt for 2 years and then stays healthy a big chunk of their career.
  3. His K rate improved, his BB rate improved, his LD% improved. His swing% at pitches out of the zone improved. The main thing that drove his bad season was a low BABIP which given his GB% and speed and improved LD% was just luck. His HR% was down a little as well but that is a stat that fluctuates a lot as well, especially when 1 HR can make such a huge difference given the sample. The slash stats don't always tell the real story over a small sample.
  4. This simply is not true though. The PCL season ended on Sept 5th in 2005. Fielder was up for 42 Brewer games while the PCL was still playing games. Out of those 42 games he started in 5 of them. Fielder spent 37 games in 2005 as a pinch hitter or pure bench warmer for the Brewers before Nashville's season was even over. Gamel was up for 58 Brewer games while the PCL was still playing games. Out of those 58 games Gamel started in 29 of them, he was used as a PH or pure bench guy for 29 games. Fielder burned up almost 1/3 of a season of service time to be a pinch hitter for a team that at best aspired to luck into a .500 record. Even if you completely ignore the september callup time Fielder 'wasted' more games on the bench in 2005 than Gamel did last year. I guess it was just long enough ago that people don't remember it now.
  5. I could say the same from not seeing the difference between 2.5 PA per game and 1 PA per game. Gamel played half time while he was up, Fielder rotted on the bench as a pinch hitter. Just because my opinion is different than yours does not mean it isn't based on reasonable assumptions and I'm just sticking to my guns besides information saying I'm wrong. No such information has been supplied. Btw, I don't think Gamel was handled properly either. Just saying Fielder went through basically the same situation.
  6. Played some of the best OF defense in all of baseball would probably be the reason. His hitting improved last year as well, even if the slash stats don't show it. Thats not to say he won't play his way out of the job though.
  7. Garland is a younger Davis/Washburn. A #4 type guy who would be a small upgrade over Looper at least. I'd be ok with him if it is cheap.
  8. So Gamel was up for 57 games before September callup time and got 141 PA and people are up in arms about it. Fielder was up for 29 games before September callup time and got 34 PA. Still not seeing a big difference here. As for Weeks, I don't think you are obligated to bring up any prospects after just 249 PA in AAA regardless of their stats, especially one that is defensively deficient and working on it still. Not to mention the fact he did not destroy AA in any way shape or form the previous season.
  9. Prince Fielder was up for the Brewers from mid June until early July. He started just 5 games in almost a month of time and sat on the bench and PH the rest of the time. He then came up again in mid August until the end of the season and only started 2 games that entire time. He was in the majors for 58 games, over 1/3 of the season and got 62 PA in those games. I don't see how that isn't worse than what happened with Gamel this year. I would have made him a september call up and started his clock the next season. We weren't playing for anything that year and I like to give players a full year in AAA before they come up. The idea is to create a solid window to win in, not rush your young guys up as fast as possible to push for win #75. I think they were too aggressive with all of them.
  10. Hardy should have started the season in AAA given how little time he had spent there and the fact he was coming off of a major injury. Weeks should have been brought up later in the season to help with service time issues and he should have been shut down when he hurt his thumb. Even though it was supposedly safe to play through the injury I don't think you want to take the risk with one of your young stars. It very well may have changed his swing mechanics for the worse playing that way. I think the fact Overbay was our starting 1B should have kept Fielder in AAA where he could have played full time instead of just sitting on the bench and pinch hitting sometimes. If people think Gamel was ruined by not playing full time I'd imagine their heads would explode if they went back and looked at Fielders 2005 game log. Even at the time I thought that we were making moves to get fans in the seats and not to maximize what we got out of our talent. Like I said I can understand why they would do it, building a fan base is a big part of turning the team around. I still think they rushed things a little bit too much.
  11. I don't think McGehee full time at 2B is going to be viable. I also highly doubt Escobar starts the season batting 2nd with Macha as manager for the people putting him there. If we aren't convinced Weeks will be healthy they will bring back Counsell or Lopez to play 2B I bet.
  12. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/more-on-catchers-fieldingwppb/ http://www.drivelinemechanics.com/2009/10/13/1082419/2009-catcher-defense-filling-in Not to mention he has a reputation as a poor defensive C, which of course isn't always accurate.
  13. I posted this elsewhere but Olivo is probably the worst defensive C in baseball. Not sure that is who we want to go after.
  14. I don't think they meant Hardy for those guys straight up, Hardy as part of a deal involving them makes sense.
  15. Olivo is probably the worst defensive C in baseball so I don't think we go for him. He really does fit better in the AL where he can DH from time to time.
  16. I think Hardy, Weeks and Fielder were all brought up before they should have been personally. I understand why they did it, but I still think they should have each spent about another half season in the minors.
  17. I don't think it is fair to evaluate Gomez just on what he has done at the major league level so far without considering his age. His BB/K both improved last year as did his LD%. There are certainly positive indicators in his stats to suggest he is getting better. His out of zone swing % dropped from 37% in 2008 to 30% last year as well which clearly indicates better pitch recognition. This is a player who at least appears to be improving even if it isn't apparent from last years slash stats. It is really going to come down to what they spend the money they saved on. If they pick up like Lackey or something then I'm happy about it. If we pick up Washburn and Davis then I think the team got worse.
  18. Davis was a mediocre SP, Hardy is a good SS. This comment makes no sense to me. Davis was a shrug, we can replace you relatively easily type deal, Hardy is harder to replace in general imo. Of course my opinion of Davis is probably much lower than yours, he is basically a Looper or Suppan to me. A bad pitcher who had a little luck with ERA a few times.
  19. Bourn didn't really figure it out, he played hurt most of 2008 and it hurt his stats. I think Gomez will have an OBP over .300 in 2010. His plate discipline did improve last year going from 1 K per 4.23 PA to 1 per 4.84 PA. His BB rate went from 1 per 24.6 to 1 per 15.9. That shows some solid progression. The real problem for him last year was the .288 BABIP which isn't what you would expect from a speedy groundball hitter at all. Not to mention he is moving to the easier league. If he puts up defense like he has so far and can keep that plate discipline and hit even .260 he is going to be a 2 or 2.5 WAR player. I still don't like the trade all that much but I don't think it is terrible either.
  20. It is banned in the minors, not the majors.
  21. Gomez is better defensively than Gwynn and has some upside at least. I'm not a huge fan of the trade but Gomez is better than Gwynn.
  22. Three bad players change places, really isn't going to change anything for either team.
  23. Not that I would ever use RBI as a measuring stick for anything, but Cameron had less than 50% of his PA batting 5th. He hit 6th more than any other position and that isn't usually a huge RBI spot. Certainly not as much as batting 3rd. Abreu is a better hitter because of his OBP but Cameron absolutely blows Abreu away defensively so he is the better player most likely.
  24. I'd lose more respect for him if he just smoked cigarettes than pot. I mean at least you get some sort of tangible buzz from pot and you don't generally poison others while smoking it since you do it in privacy.
  25. If this saves them from signing Bay it is a huge deal for the Red Sox. Bay is such a bad defensive player and such an inconsistent offensive player that he is never going to be worth what he gets for a contract this season.
