  1. Cubs and Mets but both teams had huge injury concerns before the season so it was very believable that they would have these problems.
  2. I think he came to spring training in better shape more than anything.
  3. I was ok with the idea of a Cabrera trade because I think he was underrated but lets be serious here, 90% of the fan base thought the idea of this trade was horrible because Melky was coming off of a miserable season. Most of the people posting in this thread are completely posting from a hindsight is 20/20 level and not really being honest with themselves.
  4. Cordero was also the main culprit the Brewers lost to the Cubs in 2007. If he doesn't implode on the road, the Brewers would've won the division. Can't have it both ways. This is about the weakest comment I've seen on these boards. Lee would have likely cost the team at least 2-3 wins with his horrible OF defense as well, can't blame a season on one single blown save.
  5. I find this so completely absurd that I don't give it even a tiny bit of credit. The fans know the truth and he hides it from his wife, yeah right.
  6. Cordero had a mild injury that caused him to get off to a slow start that year. It was also trading a partial season of Lee for more than a full season of Cordero so I really fail to see what the big deal is. Sure Cruz is having a good year this year but we are talking about 3 years later and pitchers have started to find holes in his swing so his stats have not stayed all star calibre. I'm guessing his .263/.328/.526 line over his last 78 games is probably the reality for him. Good stats but not amazing given the park he is playing in.
  7. We failed by not developing pitching. Trading for pitching is fine and all but it is extremely hard to do. When you only develop 1(2 if Parra pans out) major league quality SP over a 6 year period it is really hard to have a long history of success. The last home grown pitcher we had that was worth anything was Ben Sheets in 2000. Between 2000 and 2006 we just developed nothing and we have nothing at AAA right now. If you have to point a finger at just one person I'm pointing it squarely at Jack Z and whoever else was in charge of these things the past 10 years or so. If anything I give Melvin credit for putting up a relatively decent rotation most seasons with almost nothing to work with.
  8. PECOTA has our playoff odds up to 2.2% with most of that coming from winning the division! The big problem is the pure number of teams we have to pass for the wild card. While I don't think they are really good teams overall(NL is just weak in general), I'd say at least 2 or 3 of them plays .500 or better the rest of the way which makes them very hard to catch at this point.
  9. Hardy and Weeks were brought up to get fans in the seats, not to help the team win. They were part of the future is now movement since the team was doing so poorly. The team would have been better served if both of them spent another half season in the minors though getting fans in the park certainly helped the payroll so it is hard to argue with it. Now the fact they spent that extra payroll on Suppan is something I can argue with~.
  10. Or how poorly Jack Z did drafting pitching~. Sure we could have spent the money on something better than Suppan but the bigger issue is the complete lack of depth in the minors. If you are going to blame one you have to blame both. They actually didn't and that is the entire point. Their rotation was Jeff Francis, Aaron Cook, Josh Fogg, Jason Hirsch and Ubaldo Jiminez. Francis had one season of sub 5 ERA under his belt and was probably pretty comperable to Looper. Cook was at best comperable to Gallardo. Fogg was a career cripple not unlike what we are throwing out there. Hirsch never proved anything and Jiminez was a young unproven guy with control problems like Parra. They were very comperable to our situation and just got extremely hot. Even bad/mediocre pitchers go on month long stretches of throwing the ball well. Some team that is sitting around .500 is going to get hot and make a run at it in the second half. There are plenty of teams to choose from that fit the criteria so odds are against any single team but there will be one team that everyone thinks is out of it that is still 'in it' late into the season almost for sure.
  11. These deals were rumors at best though, Melvin could have traded Kendall for Lincecum too I'm sure. We don't know what deals he could have done and people just always assume they aren't trying to trade for pitching.
  12. I want absolutely no part of Doug Davis, we already have one Suppan, we don't need a second one.
  13. The biggest flaw with the current setup of the Brewers is the complete lack of pitching prospects. If you are going to make a statement like this you need to put the blame squarely on Jack Z and not Melvin. To be honest I think Jack Z is a bit overrated. We had a ton of early picks and they turned into mostly good players but with a lot of misses too and he has mostly struck out on drafting pitchers which are the backbone of the team.
  14. There is some really results orientedness going on in this. The Koskie trade in no way, shape or form was a bad deal, he just got hurt and he really had little to do with Branyan since we ended up getting Branyan back and letting him go again anyway. Brady Clark basically was worthless after the trade so hard to say that was bad, it was junk for junk. The Davis trade I just don't agree with others on how bad it was. Davis is not a very good pitcher and we would have only had him for one year(he signed an extension). So 1 year of Davis just isn't all that valuable.(he had a 4.72 xFIP that year). We lost the trade from a results standpoint but it really wasn't as bad as some people want to make it out to be. If Estrada and Vargas don't both get hurt and produce poorly after the injuries we might be looking at this as a win for all we know.
  15. Nothing wrong with that at all. In my mind their season is over, but the reality is that bad teams get hot all the time so they still aren't 'done'. I think the Rockies showed that a hot streak can turn a sub .500 team into a world series one in just a month, even if it really wasn't a very good team. The Astros have made a couple runs with weak teams in the past few years too but fell short.
  16. If this cost us a player who has a chance to be even a backup player in the majors it is too high a price unless he really is a type B and that is why they are doing it. Davis is nowhere near good enough to make a difference for this season.

  22. Sure but in this particular case you can strongly make the statement that you gave him every chance you could to turn it around before it came to this and you were forced to do it even though you didn't want to. I really don't think the players union would win this one given how Hardy has done this year and how Escobar has done in the minors.
  23. No reason they can't bring players up 09/02 though. They don't always do it on the 1st. Just because Sept 1st is the 20th day doesn't mean he won't come up the 2nd after 21 days is the point I think.
  24. I think Yost was the right choice for manager the first time around, he just stuck with him too long. He was the right choice for a rebuilding young team, the wrong one for a borderline playoff team where every bad in game decision becomes more costly.
  25. Hardy won't get anywhere near $7-8M next year given his production this year. I agree his days are numbered for us but if Escobar comes up and is crappy for a month we easily could start next year with Hardy at SS but on the block if no trades surface during the off season.
