  1. Forgot about Hoffpauir, he should do the trick for them. Gathright gettings ABs is a pretty funny joke that Lou might play on the Cubs.
  2. Burrell was worth roughly $12.5M last year and $7.8M in 2007. The bad defense really drains his value and he has a pretty significant injury risk. I don't think this is as big a discount as people are saying it is. It is a nice deal for them but I'm not amazed that he didn't get a huge contract since Sabean didn't go after him and Bavasi lost his job.
  3. Of course he only let that few hits because of a lucky BABIP and he BB over 5 per 9 IP. This is not an elite RP unless that second half spike in command is a new skill level and not just a blip. And just an fyi, the best RPs in the history of baseball didn't routinely have a strand rate anywhere near as high as Cruz last year, it was a fluke regardless of the stats he put up.
  4. So are they going to sign another OF for when Bradley gets hurt? Johnson can't really play every day.
  5. Apparently a year off shouldn't matter since it wasn't an arm related injury according to Will Carroll. My bold prediction is that Gallardo has a better year than either Cy Young winner from last season. That isn't to say he'll have a sub 3 ERA, I just think both Lee and Lincecum are going to regress a good bit. I think Gallardo will be in the low to mid 3's in ERA and go pretty deep into games on a regular basis. Wins are just too luck based to even begin to predict.
  6. I guess I spoke too fast, it has shown as not available for me all day on both sets. I don't really watch TV much so not going to sweat it just yet but maybe it was added to the digital package for TWC.
  7. Lowrie can play SS and 3B, I'd say we have a need for him. Escobar shouldn't sniff the majors this year most likely so he'd play SS this year and then we finally dump Hall next year and Lowrie takes over.
  8. Here are the 2B that had 400+ PA last year sorted by value according the fangraphs metrics and $$ values. Utley - 36.8M Uggla - 20.3M DeRosa - 19.4M Phillips - 14.4M Durham - 13.1M Johnson - 10.3M Weeks - 9.6M Hudson 9.5M Matsui - 8.8M Barmes - 8.6M Miles - 8.5M Lopez - 4.7M Kent - 4.5M Sanchez - 2.5M If you cut it to qualified for batting title you only get 8 players total and Lopez and Sanchez are both significantly worse than him. Only 5 teams in the NL had a significant advantage over the Brewers at 2B last year and Weeks makes very little money. He earned less than he produced which is how you want to build a team.
  9. League average players are extremely valuable. A team of all league average players and then Braun and Gallardo is a playoff team to put it in perspective. What you don't want to settle for is players who are replacement level.
  10. Of course the 3 year trend for JJ vs righties is .267 OBP, .306 OBP, .320 OBP and his 3 year growth in OPS is .597, .729, .764. He is the guy who is actually improving unlike some other Brewers.
  11. I'd suggest you take your box in and get a new one, I've never once had to reboot my TWC box to get anything to work. I did have one box that hated channels 100+ and I replaced it and it fixed it. Their hardware is terrible since I think they just keep quasi repairing every new device that comes in.
  12. I think Parra could be a real stud this year. While his ERA collapsed in the second half his skills really didn't. He had 9.0 K/9 and only 3.3 BB/9 in the 2nd half with a 55% GB rate. That comes out to an xERA of 3.17. It was all derailed by a 37% hit rate and a bloated 18% HR/FB which likely were just from fatigue. Shandler listed him as a 3.91 ERA but with an UP prediction of 3.25. Full season of Gallardo is a #1 SP as well most likely, he is the real deal if he can stay healthy.
  13. He was roughly a league average 2B last year and didn't get paid a whole lot so I'd assume he should be starting again, his defense improved a lot though he still has the occassional mental-lapse-bone-headed-throw-the-remote-at-the-tv-in-anger type of play. I don't have a big problem with having some sort of insurance for right handed pitchers though since he seems to really struggle against righties with decent breaking stuff.
  14. I have heard plenty of horror stories about direct TV as well. Basically whichever path you have gone stick with it because anytime a technician has to come to your house or your bill has to be modified in some way you have a high chance of something bad happening with either of them. I had a friend who just hated direct TV, constantly locked up on him, bad connections on some channels, extra charges to get NFL network in HD, they wanted to charge him $200 to have a tech come in and hook up a 2nd TV etc. He switched to TWC and said it was nothing but a headache as well. I have TWC right now and while they can be annoying sometimes I can't imagine changing. Stick with the status quo is my advice!
  15. I have the digital access and I'm still getting it as well. I most certainly do not pay for the digital package as I just upgraded and they asked me which I wanted and I said the free one.
  16. Lowe has a skillset that plays in any park and historically ages well so I'm not against overpaying a bit to get him if management thinks we are 1 SP away from the playoff race. I'd like to see him sign for a bit less than he is asking for of course.
  17. Yeah I'm not against trading Weeks for Floyd, I guess I got off track there a bit. I just don't consider Floyd a high upside pitcher, his upside is a #3 in my opinion, maybe a #2 if he lands in an extreme pitchers park. He is Chris Capuano before the injury to me.
  18. You are talking a pretty darn small sample of data. There is a chance that McClung figured something out down the stretch but there is as big or bigger of a chance that he just had a hot streak and will revert to the 5ish ERA pitcher he has been over his career. I don't think you want to count on him for anything.
  19. Yes but to consider that his BABIP will be abnormally low including lower than his major league average so far just because of last year is silly. There is no evidence at all that suggests he should have a .284 BABIP next year. If Floyd is going to improve it will be limiting HRs or giving up fewer BBs most likely. Young pitchers K rates don't usually go up much and his BABIP is going to go up from last year and not down.
  20. I will gladly take the under (or would it be the over?) on that projection. His BABIP isn't likely to be under his career norm unless he just gets lucky again or his FB% goes up even more and if that happens his HR/9 will spike and make up for it. If Floyd is going to improve over his career rates it will be by his BB/9 going down (James shows it going up).
  21. I liked that he walked 10% of the time in the first half compared to the 4% in the second half. He also got the ball up in the air more in the first half, if he keeps that second GB rate of 55% it is going to be hard for him to be more than a slap hitter.. His second half was BABIP inflated compared to the first half which drove most of that OPS.
  22. Oops I was a year off but this is his age 26 season not his age 25. I still don't think he has the upside that you do. Flyball guy with mediocre control and only borderline K rate is not a profile that you trade for in general. I think people are too high on him because of a low BABIP last year making his stats look a lot better than they were.
  23. There is no way I'd trade Hardy for Ellsbury, especially after Ellsbury had such a skid in the 2nd half when they stopped throwing him strikes and he failed to adjust. Buchholz is kind of a hard person to gauge so not sure what his trade value is. Cameron has 1 year left and his contract is probably pretty close to his real value so I doubt he has a ton of value unless a team needs a one year guy to push them into the playoffs.
  24. I think Floyd is a 4.50 ERA guy so I'm not sure I'd want to actually trade for him. At 27 he might improve some still of course but I don't see him as all that high upside. Certainly not as high as Parra or Gallardo.
  25. Last year was Lyon's best year of his career so maybe there is some hidden upside there and maybe the fact his ERA was flukey good in 2007 and flukey bad in 2008 would make him cheap enough to be worth it, dunno. He is still most likely a high 3 ERA type so would hardly be a dominating closer, probably about the same as CV.
