  1. Mota was between 0.5-1.0 runs above replacement so he pretty much earned his money and he might have been the difference between the Mets and Brewers making the playoffs given how bad the end of the Mets bullpen was. Suppan pretty much earned his salary in 07 and before his injury in 08 but he was terrible after the injury. Gagne was a straight up risk of course but if he repeated his ERA from 07 he would have been worth something like $5M-6M and obviously they thought there was a chance the 2nd half was the fluke. I guess I fail to see Melvin as making a ton of bad moves. The worst moves he has made have probably been giving extentions to Hall and Turnbow and giving away Gross when the team needed a LH bat.
  2. I agree with this however this isn't the situation Sabathia was in really and as a professional baseball player you spend so much time away from home that I'm not sure it applies the same way as most jobs.
  3. I gotta say it is a good risk as well. Only going 2 years is a huge advantage and $10M isn't overboard for closer prices. Just to add I'm still not a believer in Marmol. He has a career BABIP against of .243 and is an extreme flyball guy. That BABIP will creep up and he'll put more guys on base and then those HRs will start to hurt him more. He won't be bad or anything but I'm thinking a 3.50 ERA is more likely than a 2.50.
  4. That might be the reason burrell isn't back because of how he did in the 2nd half I don't agree that it is how player decisions SHOULD be handled.
  5. Any clutchiness stat is 90% likely to be completely useless because they deal in small samples. ARod as an example was clutch in the playoffs until he had a few bad games and now he is unclutch and I'm sure if he had one great series leading the yankees to a title he would be clutch again. It is just silly.
  6. So you are going to base how good a player is on half a year of a small sample of his ABs? Just makes no sense to me. RBI has almost nothing to do with how good either of these players are, RBI are a situational ability that relies as much or more on other players than on yourself.
  7. He didn't really defy the odds, he just hit in a neutral park instead of a pitchers park for the first time in his career.
  8. Well either they stand pat in which case they obviously are looking at 2010 being the year to make a push or they make some moves and target 2009. It is way too early in the offseason to know which one is the plan. Both plans make sense. Gallardo and Parra probably need a full year to get stretched out and pitch to their potential and our next wave of minor leaguers are all at least half a year away from being ready. My guess is they are playing for 2010 because talking about a Cabrera for Cameron trade only makes sense for 2010 in my opinion.
  9. I wouldn't give Sheets 3 years and I'm one of his bigger apologists. I don't like more than 4 years for any pitcher and when you have one with an injury history I really don't like even 3. If the Brewers were going to go after a FA pitcher I'd like to take a one year deal on RJ or a 4 year on Lowe rather than Sheets. Lowe is the kind of pitcher that seems to age pretty well as the extreme groundball type of guy.
  10. http://i27.tinypic.com/28akex2.jpg Saw a thread with a whole bunch of movies about his terrible defense but that one was the funniest of the bunch.
  11. I have to agree, we didn't lose 16 wins worth of players and if anything the team probably underperformed last year as a unit. I'd say losing Sabathia, Sheets and Torres is probably around a 10 win drop with an added win or two from Gallardo being healthy and a win or 2 from losing Turnbow, Gagne, Riske being healthy, Hall sitting more vs righties etc. So we are looking at something like a .500 team or maybe a game or two over .500.
  12. RBI is why he is good? Really? So you are saying he is good because Suzuki gets on base a lot. Ibanez's defense will pretty much make that a bad signing if his offense slips even a tiny bit over the next 3 years. If his offense slips a lot he is probably a 1 win above replacement player and worth about $5M a year.
  13. Really depends on what they do with the money I guess. If they say sign Abreu and use Cabrera as a 4th OF I like the deal or if they sign Sheets with it or even Lowe I don't mind it. There are two types of Yankee prospects, guys who get overrated because they are a yankee so they must be good and those that get underrated because they aren't an instant success and yankee fans have no patience. I think Melky is the second type, he is an above average fielder and around a league average hitter (for CF) most likely.
