  1. Cano may very well be worse defensively than Weeks, he was statistically last year by quite a bit. Cabrera wouldn't have anywhere to play for us with that swap so not really sure how that would work out. I'm not convinced Kennedy is any better than Suppan so I guess it really comes down to how good Hughes really is. I dunno, I wouldn't be happy with that trade but I'm not going to say it wouldn't work out either. It would certainly clear some cash to be used elsewhere though. No way in heck I want Escobar starting in the majors this year and Hardy is above average at SS so not sure it is a good idea to move him until we are forced to.
  2. We definitely need to improve in the bullpen or lineup if we don't sign a real pitcher to join the rotation. Sheets and Sabathia were roughly 5 wins each, Torres might be 2 wins and probably is offset by not having Gagne, Turnbow, Riske (the injured version). Gallardo is probably at least 2 wins so we are at -8 wins. Add a win somewhere in the bullpen, a win from improvements at 3B and Hart/Fielder moving their numbers up a little and we are at -6 wins. Then if we sign some mediocre SP we are at like -4 or -5 wins. I don't see how we go into next year without the expectation of at least 84-85 wins. I hope that we don't build for 85 wins though, they need to make a bigger move somewhere and get that number up near 87-88 to have a chance at the wild card. To look at it another way going into last year people thought we were somewhere between an 85 and 90 win team, we lost Sheets who people were expecting to be hurt and was probably only worth 3-4 wins in most peoples mind and Torres who wasn't a huge part of the picture. So why would we go into this season thinking we were a sub .500 team?
  3. It would also mean Gallardo or Parra were hurt since I'd say both of them are better pitchers than Bush.
  4. Cubs were not a 97 win talent team so I have no problem giving it to them. Deserves it more than say Torre for taking the dodgers to the playoffs when they played under their talent level. I'd have gone with LaRussa mid season but then they came back down to earth.
  5. Well remember we will have some addition by subtraction. Gagne, Riske and Turnbow combined for a line of 95 IP, 116 H, 64 ER, 6.06 ERA, 60 BB, 70 K, 1.85 WHIP. Assuming Riske is healthy next year and we replace the rest of those innings with something anywhere near league average I'd say we are doing ok. Take those 3 out and Torres since he won't be returning and our basic bullpen put up a line of... 297.3 IP, 252 H, 106 ER, 3.21 ERA, 121 BB, 264 K, 1.25 WHIP. What we do to replace that 175 IP we lost obviously goes a large way towards deciding how the bullpen is but the core isn't too bad. Take Mota out of the picture and the core looks even better, there are some decent arms in there just not enough of them just yet.
  6. If they had won 2 more games in April they would have made the playoffs, so maybe April isn't just another month?
  7. I like Hoffman because he'll probably be happy with a 2 year deal or 3 year tops. While he has been slipping some lately he is still likely as good as Torres at least. Hoffman, Riske, McClung, Stetter, Villanueva, Shouse is certainly the start of a decent bullpen.
  8. The season is longer than just September...
  9. My biggest fear is we overpay for Sabathia or trade for Peavy who is going to be way over priced or trade Hardy and start Escobar. Basically we make some move that will hurt the team long term. Signing someone like Garland or Byrd would be just as bad, though signing Fuentes wouldn't be that huge of a deal(not that I want to sign him either) to me since we have no dominant RPs at all. I'm not a fan of closers but I am a fan of good bullpens.
  10. I'd love to trade for a solid 3B but Atkins really isn't one. His road numbers are abysmal and he is terrible defensively.
  11. I won't say it negated most but it did negate a lot of it. Fielder was not one of the 5 most valuable players on the team last year. Sheets, Sabathia, Hardy, Cameron, Braun were all definitely more valuable. How much the defense negates the offense really depends on which stats you believe in.
  12. Except apparently Trevor Hoffman who was looking at only like $4M and is better than Torres.
  13. Halladay faced MUCH tougher competition, .030 OPS on average tougher which is something like 0.45 runs per game.. Halladay had a lower OPS against. Halladay pitched more innings. The had basically the same ERA, the difference is like 1 or maybe 2 ER. I just don't see a good reason for Lee to be picked over Halladay. Granted if say KRod and Webb had won it I would have totally flipped out. If it is Lee or Lincecum they at least got 1 of the top 2 in each bracket unlike say making McLouth a gold glove winner.
  14. Santana 234 1/3 IP, 2.53 ERA, .648 OPS against, pitches in a little bit less of a pitchers park Lincecum ERA 227 IP, 2.62 ERA, .612 OPS against, pitches in NL West which was the weakest division in baseball. Like I said it is really darn close so I'm not upset one way or the other, I'd have voted for Santana because he isn't in the NL west pretty much. I'm just saying I don't see how anyone can be upset with Santana getting 1st place votes like he only got them for playing in NY or something. Webb is a good bit behind either of them and got 2nd place.
  15. Santana got 4 first place votes because he was the best pitcher in the NL last year. Santana was every bit as good as Lincecum and faced harder opposition doing it. Dont' worry the decision for Lee to win it in the AL will be ten times worse than this one though. I don't sweat these things because they almost never get it right and to be fair this one was extremely close, but to somehow argue that Santana getting 1st place votes is silly is beyond me. The fact that Webb was ahead of Santana is the big joke in all of this.
  16. Paul Konerko - 2003 put up an .704 OPS in between years of .857 and .894 and was healthy, most of it was a horrid first half. Pat Burrell - 2003. OPS of .713 in between two years of .920 and .820. Albert Pujols - 2002. OPS of only .955 in between years of 1.013 and 1.106. Lance Berkman - 2007. OPS of .896 between years of 1.041 and .987 Alex Rodriguez - 2004 and 2006. OPS as a yankee has been .887, 1.031, .915, 1.067, .965. OPS is not some stat that is just the same every year. It dips up and down by .050 on a regular basis and it isn't uncommon to jump or fall a full .100. Furthermore Fielder had a 1 year base for his OPS so for all we know 2007 was just a hot year for him and 2006/2008 are more the expectations though I don't personally think it is true. As for August yes Fielder had an OPS under .800 that month but like I said it was almost completely from BABIP. In July Fielder put up a .965 OPS with 4 doubles, 1 triple, 6 HR and 17 BB, 25 K. In August he had a .780 with 3 doubles, 6 HR, 16 BB, 26 K. The only significant diference between those months was a few extra hits..
  17. I see this as Fla removing problem players more than rebuilding. Willingham has serious back problems and is a hack in the field, Olsen is one of the biggest jerks in baseball apparently and is the old 'clubhouse cancer. These are just guys that Fla did not want around in the future so they dumped them before they got expensive. I'd have to know more about the prospects to really judge the deal.
  18. I would imagine Devine is their new closer, not Ziegler. As amazing as the streak was for Ziegler, Devine was a much better pitcher and had a 0.59 ERA.
  19. LINK If the nats really do go after Teix they could actually have a pretty nice lineup now.
  20. The A's have too many OF right now, they would be looking to trade for IF if anything.
  21. BPro talked a little about this move today in the NL transactions at http://www.baseballprospe...ticle.php?articleid=8295. They stated that they like Dillon but the move makes sense for the Brewers as McGehee can hit enough for a backup and is considered a slick fielding 3B and that he would make a pretty decent partner with Gamel should the Brewers decide to start him next year. McGehee could be a late inning defensive replacement etc.
  22. This really isn't true at all, tons of players have down years even without injuries, especially considering how huge a leap his 2007 stats were from his 2006 stats. Fielder had a slow start to the year and it suppressed his stats all year long. He posted OPS of over .900 in 3 of his last 4 months and the one month he didn't was because of a .239 BABIP not a spike in K or big drop in HR or anything, sometimes a slump is just a slump.
  23. When he comes out and hits like .260 with not enough walks or power in AAA this year I just don't see them bringing him up to start next year. His only offensive skill is AVG and a lot of it has come from bunt singles, I just don't think he is the type you want to rush to the majors.
  24. Hardy is an above average SS, why would we move him to 3B and reduce his value? I mean maybe if we were desperate it would make some sense but Furcal will likely be overpaid to begin with and isn't the smartest target.
  25. Every year around a dozen teams go into the season without certainty at closer or their closer gets injured causing uncertainty. The majority of those teams have things work out just fine. Closer is not a particularily important part of the team but having a lot of good arms in the bullpen IS important.
