  1. The strikeout graph basically looks like a plot of random data. Someone linked a chart showing correlation of a bunch of advanced metrics and OPS came out pretty decently in them. Things like eqa and 1.8*obp+slg did even better. Improving OBP is the easiest way to improve our runs scored probably but just cutting down on strike outs has only a little bit to do with OBP.
  2. The OBP problem comes mostly down to Hart and Hall. If we can upgrade Hall at 3B and Hart, Fielder, Braun and Weeks move towards their expected OBP we should be fine with Cameron. There just isn't some magical .370 OBP full time CF out there that we can replace him with easily. I'm not even sure there is a .350 OBP guy. The best way to upgrade the team OBP is probably going to be to find a 3B which we need regardless.
  3. This simple isn't true at all. Location, winning atmosphere, market size, endorsements still play huge roles in NFL football. The Patriots and Cardinals are not on equal terms at all in the NFL. Baseball still needs to do a little bit of work but some silly salary cap isn't the answer. The game would have to be redesigned from the ground up to make a salary cap even work with the minor leagues. In the end I doubt the competitive balance would even be any better overall as teams still flock to the teams that give them the best chance to make money on the side or the teams that give them the best chance to win a championship.
  4. I think the people who are hung up on strike outs and ignore all the other things about a player are just a dying breed on the site JohnBriggs. Not that I completely disagree with you, if there is a high OBP alternative I'd gladly take it. I'd love to bring in Brian Giles as an example but not sure how the OF defense would work out since I don't think Hart can handle CF. Calling Cameron part of the problem is stretching it though. Hart and Hall were by far the biggest positional problems with this team this season. Cameron was probably the 3rd most valuable positional player on the team behind Braun and Hardy.
  5. Best record doesn't mean best team though. The Cubs had the best record in the NL but probably would have been the 4th or 5th best team in the AL. You could even make a case for them being the 2nd best in the NL. If you wanted to just see the best 2 teams play we probably already saw that when the Rays beat the Red Sox.
  6. http://milwaukee.brewers....mp;fext=.jsp&c_id=mil Sabathia - MVP, most valuable pitcher, top newcomer Kendall - unsung hero Counsell - good guy award Eric Gagne - Michael Harrison award for community service
  7. I'd add that I'd like to see him get more days off next year if we do keep him. I know the entire team slumped down the stretch last year but Cameron has a history of it with just a .727 OPS in Sept/Oct in his career compared to a .788 overall. I can only assume this comes from wearing down physically as the season goes on.
  8. Sorry but I don't buy this one bit. MLB has fewer playoff teams than any other major sport and a longer schedule to weed out the lucky teams. It is harder to make the playoffs in baseball than in any other sport. The biggest difference now is that you don't get penalized for being in the same division as the best team in the sport. The Red Sox missing the playoffs this season would not have made the playoffs worse and it didn't kill the importance of the 162 game season.
  9. Ressurecting this old thread rather than just starting a new one just to get a perspective on what people thought of the signing last year. Do you guys want Cameron back next season? I personally think he did a great job and would love to see him back unless we somehow find a LH high OBP player to play CF. Fangraphs rated him the best free agent bargain of 2008. http://www.fangraphs.com/...years-free-agent-bargain/ ------------------------------------------ Moderator note: Since the off-season discussion has taken off, I've split this discussion into a thread of its own. Here's the thread Ennder refers to (now locked): Brewers sign Mike Cameron (1yr/$6.22 mil + 2009 Team Option) --1992casey ------------------------------------------
  10. They actually probably would, especially since only 1 of the injuries was a big deal.
  11. I'm pulling for Macha. Sounds like he was fine the first few years there and then something happened to cause problems the year that he was released. Brenly seems like a bafoon when it comes to in game managing. I think those two are the only 'real' candidates.
  12. Weeks definitely loses focus and makes silly errors which hurts him defensively. He has above average range though which offsets it. I think Weeks is probably a slightly below average 2B but I think Hardy is just an average SS and might be slightly below avg. So with respects to the position they play I think it is pretty even. Hardy is reliable but unspectacular, Weeks is erratic. Every player in baseball messes up easy plays from time to time though. Just look at that Cubs game where every one of their infielders made a silly error and they are an above average defensive IF. Weeks just makes them more often than others and people end up dwelling on it. A dive and miss on a play that another player makes doesn't seem to bother people as much as just making a silly error.
  13. Jackson's 'breakout' was just the Rays improving on defense. His K/9 is hovering just over 6 and he still gives up too many BB's. He is Dave Bush with worse control so I personally wouldn't want him.
  14. He really struggles going deep into games. He lost a bunch of weight before the season but it apparently didnt' help. I pegged him as a breakout guy this year and that obviously didn't work out to well, heh.
  15. Red Sox were the 2nd best team in baseball and won a 'wild card'. Hard for me to think of them as the best of the losers.
  16. I'd say trading for Sabathia and Torres and signing Cameron and Kendall probably had as much to do with it as drafting did. I'm sad to see him go because he does a good job and you never know what the next guy will be like. Hopefully his replacement will draft pitching better and get some higher OBP players who are good fielders. He gave us a very strong core of young power bats but we need to flesh out the roster with other players now.
  17. I guess we'll just disagree. The Salary Cap still favors some teams over others so there still isn't competitive balance. The Patriots, Packers etc pay a lot less to sign a FA than the Lions or Cardinals. There are still teams that haven't been competitive for 10+ years in a row. Sure they might sneak into the wild card occassionally because 2 or 3 lucky wins is enough to turn a 6 win team into a playoff team in the NFL some season but there are still teams with no chance even with the cap. The salary cap is great at creating the 'illusion of parity' but it is really more the 16 game schedule and unbalanced schedule that creates it more than the cap itself.
  18. Football is popular because it is fun to watch and only takes up 3 hours of your week. Has very little to do with the salary cap. I still question whether it is 'the most popular sport in the country' as well but that is probably a discussion for another day. There are just as many teams that stand no chance year in and year out in the NFL as in MLB.
  19. I read that link endaround and gotta say I hope Brenly isn't the guy. This paragraph in particular bothers me.
  20. I haven't seen many positive posts about Brenly. Seems like the majority thinks he is a very poor in game manager.
  21. The Brewer ZiPs projections should be out sometime this week, will be interesting to see what it has to say about Escobar.
  22. Owings only has one pitch he can throw for strikes on a regular basis and that is the fastball. He has an ok slider and has been learning a change up so maybe if those improve he'll become a decent pitcher.
  23. Weeks is not a bad leadoff hitter, I just think he is a worse hitter because he hits leadoff. I think he 'tries to be a leadoff hitter' too much and he would be better served being more aggressive. As for Gamel what do you expect Melvin to say? Is he going to say we desperately need a 3B and we'll overpay to get one? Of course he is going to play down the needs of the team because the winter meetings are coming up and he is going to be looking at trade offers probably including a 3B.
  24. Escobar doesn't hit righties very well so I doubt he even outhits that part of it.
  25. I agree with Selig 100%. The have nots are mostly small market teams with bad leadership. Any well run team should be competitive in baseball today by smart drafting and picking which players to keep. Which teams are really 'have nots' anyway? The Pirates, the Nationals, The Orioles, The Rangers and I guess maybe the Reds? The rest of the teams have been competitive at some point over the last 10 years. Not very many of those teams are even small market. Don't get me started on what a sham the NFL is. Competitive balance in the NFL just means a short schedule that is set up to favor teams with a bad record so different mediocre teams make the playoffs every year. The same teams dominate year in and year out and the same teams stink year in and year out in football because some teams have to pay a ton more to get players to come to them so the salary cap doesn't really even things like people think it does. There are still haves and have nots it is just decided differently.
