  1. You could certainly start with Branyan/Hall in a platoon at 3B until Branyan gets hurt and then go to Gamel as your backup.
  2. Scoring runs is more important than OBP so I don't get what the problem is. I'll gladly take a small dip in OBP if it is made up for with SB and extra doubles and triples that put the team in a better position to score runs.
  3. Gotta say that Will Inman pick looks out of place given how pedestrian his peripherals have been in AA so far.
  4. That was a very talented draft so it is hard to go wrong.
  5. I went straight to the source and asked Chris about Hardy and this was his reply. I'll be interested to see how he rates in other systems as they become available.
  6. Weeks showed a lot of improvement this year especially in the first half so I completely disagree with that 3% comment. He slipped some in the second half so it is hard to say if he just got 'lucky' in the first half or if he genuinely improved. They usually like to use at least 2 seasons worth of data to come up with any opinion on fielding and then look at it from multiple systems to make sure they all agree.
  7. Because Escobar's stats are so heavily BABIP inflated that people don't believe it will carry over to the majors. A lot of that AVG is in bunt singles right now. He hits a ton of ground balls so it seems unlikely he'll develop any power and he doesn't BB much and he does K an average amount so it is pretty unlikely he'll carry a good OBP. It is too early to really know what he'll be yet of course but the biggest issue is that people want Escobar up in the majors in 2009 and I think that will be a disaster. Give him at least 1 full season in AAA before worrying about it.
  8. Ahh but I didn't say contact hitter http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif. I just said he favors power over contact. That can be as simple as picking the .330 OBP, .450 SLG guy over the .370 OBP, .400 SLG guy even the the OBP guy is probably a better player.
  9. Branyan hasn't ever finished a season healthy as far as I'm aware of. Blalock hasn't in quite some time either though.
  10. I don't see much of a reason to trade these guys in 2009 other than maybe Hart. Hall is a backup player to me and always has been. Fielder is a DH and nothing is going to change it, his defense kills a large part of his value. I guess Hardy is expendable if you have faith in Escobar. Braun, Gallardo and maybe Parra are who I build around at the core level.
  11. Of course they have rated him as one of the worst hitters in baseball over the last 2 years too. I'm fine with Hall's defense, just wish he could hit.
  12. Strike zone control is part of contact though. The difference between Pujols and Howard is Pujols makes better contact largely because of strike zone recognition and Howard has more power, Pujols is a much better player. Jack Z has always favored SLG over OBP in his drafting imo. He will gladly take the big HR hitter who doesn't BB enough and doesn't play good defense while other teams pass those guys by. My point was I don't think Melvin has shown a lack of understanding of OBP with the players he has brought in but it is hard to tell because so few of the important parts of the lineup were brought in by the GM, most have come from the draft.
  13. He wasn't that high last year either, I think he is just getting old and slowing down.
  14. I'd say they are roughly equal with maybe a slight advantage to Hardy. Weeks gets to a lot of balls Hardy couldn't dream of but Weeks boots plays that Hardy makes routinely. Both are roughly league average for their position. Way too much attention gets put on errors which and not enough on range in general for fan perceptions of defense.
  15. I felt they made several decisions that should have improved the OBP in 2008 but enough players underperformed expectations that it didn't end up improving. Cameron was an OBP upgrade over Jenkins. Kendall was over Estrada. Kapler over Mench. Graffanino was gone etc. However Weeks and Fielder both had dips in OBP and Hall and Hart were black holes in OBP. If I were going to 'blame' anyone for it I'd go straight to the source of most of our lineup which is Jack Z, he seems to have favored power over contact in general in his drafts.
  16. The best 1B defensively in the NL was Pujols and he got a +14.5 in defense. There were only 6 players in the NL with over a +10. The defensive numbers don't feel that off to me. The positional penalties get rolled into the defensive side of things I believe so Fielder loses some points just for being a 1B instead of a more neutral position. Carlos Lee and Brad Hawpe were the only two defensive players worse than Fielder in the rankings in the NL. He really was that bad at 1B. He had a good but not amazing season offensively and was one of the worst 5 defensive players in the NL. I can see him being pretty average overall.
  17. Abreu is almost as bad of an OF defensively as Carlos Lee at this point. Not sure that is what we really need though the OBP sure would be nice. Giles would be a great fit though, I'd love to see us move Hart and sign Giles if that is an option. I don't think Hart's glove really plays in CF and I don't think the timing is right to try Weeks in CF so my guess is Cameron is back.
  18. Another metric dissing Hardy's defense. Interesting. Seems like most defensive metrics mostly agree on 9 of 10 players and Hardy falls into that 1 of 10 that they completely disagree on. I've seen him listed as great, average and terrible using different metrics.
  19. Final OPD results got posted today. This is a stat that attempts to assign an overall batting+fielding value to a player though I don't think it works with baserunning. It measures runs created by the hitting + runs saved by defense. It also adjusts for positions so Fielder is penalized for playing 1B etc. Link below has much more details. http://www.baseballthinkf...plus_defense_opd_results/ Overall we rated 6th in the NL which seems about right. STL was #1 which I have to agree with again, that is a really bad pitching staff that put up decent numbers because of very good fielding. Team stats showed us around average overall at 1B, 3B, C, SS. We were +9.9 at 2B, +18.2 at CF, +14.6 at LF and -11.9 at RF. Branyan saved the 3B stats or they would have been a disaster. 16.3 Braun 15.6 off, 0.7 def 12.9 Cameron 10 off, 2.8 def 11.3 Branyan 7.6 off, 3.7 def 8.1 Weeks 6.4 off, 1.7 def 7.0 Kapler 5.7 off, 1.3 def 4.6 Durham 3.9 off, 1.4 def 5.3 Hardy 13.3 off, -8.7 def 4.2 Kendall -5.6 off, 9.7 def -0.6 Fielder 13.6 off, -14.2 def -4.0 Counsell -7.1 off, 3.1 def -6.6 Hall -13.8 off, 7.3 def -11.9 Hart -13 off, 1.2 def About what I expected. Weeks and Cameron are underrated by many on this site. Fielder loses most of his value with his defense, he needs to be a .900+ OPS guy to really have strong value. Counsell, Hall and Hart all hurt the team this season.
  20. There was a quote on BPro today about Brenly. I don't know much about him but I don't like the sound of it one bit http://www.baseballprospe.../chat/chat.php?chatId=539
  21. Carlos Gomez had 30 bunt hits and 18 infield singles and still managed to hit just .258 with a .657 OPS. That is pretty crazy, heh.
  22. I think this Joe Sheehan quote sums up what will happen in the world series nicely.
  23. Well the first reason is the people being talked about are all LH hitters which is something the team could really use. The next reason is that they expect these players to end up being better than Hart in the long run.
  24. He projects to hit about as well as Craig Counsell right now. Give him another year of growth and some time in AAA and maybe that changes some but right now he is light on power, doesn't BB enough and Ks way too much for this type of hitter. I'm not saying he'll never be a good player, I just don't see any reason to think he should be in the majors in 2009 because of a high BABIP in AA and that is pretty much the only skill he brought.
  25. You do realize a manager can't magically snap his fingers and trade any player on the roster. The Brewers trade as much or more than most teams out there, don't see much to complain about on that front.
