  1. I don't know about that. Hochevar hit the wall in AAA and never got over it, Bannister had 1 lucky year and just isn't very good, Davies is no more than a backend guy. Meche and Greinke aren't bad at all and I guess you could call that good young pitching but Meche is 30 now and is more likely to slip some than get better and Greinke has to be getting pretty close to free agency too. Comparing them to the 2005 Brewers might be pretty accurate but saying their pitching outlook was much better doesn't really seem true to me.
  2. NFL isn't neutral either. Playing in a dome is very different than on grass and the view areas are all different for the QB etc.
  3. Not like a Chi, NY or LA type market. It is large market but not the same as those ones.
  4. I watched pretty much every playoff and world series game and even purchased mlb.tv so I could watch games at work with it even though I can't watch Brewer games. I don't even watch Monday night football anymore, could just care less about any football outside of the Packers and there is no way I'd ever watch an NBA game that didn't have the Bucks in it and even Bucks games put me to sleep until the last 5 minutes or so. I couldn't name 3 players on a lot of NBA teams or NFL teams but I can name at least 75% of the roster of every MLB team. It is just so much better than the other sports in my opinion. I'm not surprised ratings were bad, no big market teams, messed up schedule because of rain, one sided series.
  5. In 2007 Counsell was one of the best defensive players in baseball is probably why. In 2008 his defense slipped some though.
  6. I agree with that but it isn't a situation where we HAVE to trade Fielder. We would prefer to trade him but if we never find a good deal and he plays out his pre free agent years for us and walks it isn't the end of the world. Going into his last season I don't think we have to take whatever we are offered just to get rid of him or anything. The draft is a bit more of a crapshoot but it goes both ways, you could get players that are useless you could get players that are better than Fielder overall, you just never know.
  7. Well true I'm sure the Royals would take him if they didn't have to give anything up and Teahen probably counts as not giving anything up. The original trade probably does make some sense. I just don't think Hall has any real value. We would be getting back some below average player in order to move him because he is a below average player himself.
  8. Yeah I have to agree that it was 100% Yo's fault that he got hurt on that play. He was late covering and should have just veered off instead of trying to jump the runner. Fielder has basically no fault.
  9. I hope there is enough bad blood between Kendall and Macha that Kendall only plays like 125 games instead of 150. I think he'd be a lot more productive with more days off.
  10. Not really true at all. When a type A FA walks you get enough value for him that it isn't a big deal. The biggest difference is the value is 3-5 years away from helping your team instead of immediate.
  11. Only Jackson probably isn't even worth Hart much less Fielder, bleh.
  12. Ok lets say Hall puts up a .254/.315/.425 line. Looking at SS with at least 400 PA last year he would have finished 13th in OPS out of 25 players. Tulo is clearly better than him defensively and he is the person right below him so 14th out of 25. I'll take my odds on Tejada over Hall as well so 15th of 25. Then you get to Harris, Cabrera who both run better than Hall and are better defensively so 17th out of 25. next we see Renteria, Scutaro, Betancourt types which is probably where Hall belongs. So yeah he has a little value as one of the worst SS in baseball and some team is going to want to trade for this? Hall has almost no trade value in my mind unless a team specifically needs a guy that can fill in all over the place. Teams in contention won't want him playing full time and teams not in contention don't want a player with a bloated contract that will be a FA soon taking up a spot that a younger guy could be getting his reps at. A team like the A's would make some sense since they have so many injury question marks in their IF. The Brewers arent' a bad fit either since we will likely have a question mark at 3B and who knows what Weeks will give us at 2b.
  13. Still don't understand why people want Edwin Jackson. He had a mediocre minor league career, has below average strike out rate and a terrible walk rate, his GB% is ok but nothing special. He might be someone to target in a trade but certainly not as the center piece of a trade involving someone like Fielder.
  14. It doesn't take a statistic to know that sticking Sheets out there for the 9th inning in a 4-1 games when he has over 100 pitches is probably not a smart move given his injury history. Yost did that multiple times this year. It doesn't take a stat to understand that when a pitcher has a sore arm you don't push him in back to back starts, Yost did that as well. I can agree with PAP being an AVG type stat though, it is an area of statistics in infancy still so it is a guideline at best. Stress is probably a better stat and Sheets ended up 6th in that even with the extra short starts thrown in otherwise he'd likely have been 3rd. IP is probably K for hitters, PAP is AVG, Stress is OBP. There is no OPS or EQA of pitcher abuse yet but they'll get there eventually.
  15. Hall has a career line of .249/.300/.441/.741 vs righties. His lines the last 2 years are 08 - .174/.242/.316/.557 07 - .247/.305/.408/.713 I don't see how any team in their right mind would want him playing every day even at SS which he is at best average at defensively. You are better off with an Omar Vizquel type player. As a utility infielder who can also help out in the OF in a pinch he has some value though. Sort of a willie bloomquist type guy with less speed and more pop.
  16. In my opinion Yost pushed Sheets because they didn't plan on re-signing him and they just hoped his arm held up for it. Sheets was 8th in baseball in AVG_PAP per start and that number is thrown off by a couple starts he left early with physical issues. Without those he is probably sitting 5th or 6th ahead or behind Zambrano. Is that how you treat a pitcher who you are worried about healthwise? Sure isn't how I would treat him.
  17. But we are trying to predict future performance so of course it does matter. I won't go into it again but people way overestimate the health of the average pitcher. Most pitchers do no go anywhere near 200 IP on a year in year out basis like people seem to think. Like I said Sheets was at the top of the list as one of the pitchers who was being abused the most in the league. This after 3 partial years in a row? Do you think this is a good plan? It isn't the 6-7 IP games that bothered me it was leaving him out there for the 8th and 9th a bunch for no real good reason. It was putting him out there for 100+ pitches in back to back games AFTER he complained about some arm soreness. Wouldn't you think that they should have been babying Sheets and Parra this season? Both of them probably had 170-200 IP in them at best given their histories and Yost just is too bone headed to understand this.
  18. Hall has decent value in a utility infielder and RH PH role. He just isn't a starter.
  19. Of course if he maintains his current weight and doesn't start the season with a 2 month slump like in 2008 and hits 45 HR his value goes up.
  20. He isn't turning down $50M though really. There is a chance he stays healthy and productive for 4 years and he is actually hurting himself significantly by taking that $50M. There is a chance he has minor injuries and is mostly productive and he is only turning down like $10M. There is a chance he completely blows out his arm and he loses $50M. He has to weigh those chances against each other and against his happiness and make his decision. Also if the yankees come back with a 6 year $25M he could easily ask to have a 5th year added with buyout or something and the Brewers might do that. Now if someone goes out and offers like $30M a year or something we really stand no chance.
  21. I'm all for Sabathia on a 4 year deal. Turn that into a 6 year deal and we'll regret it though.
  22. Another set of defensive data is out. http://lanaheimangelfan.b...efensive-projections.html These are based on 5 years of data when available so it isn't just tracking 1 year and are a projection for next season. Hardy went from a -1 to a +1 and Weeks from a -16 to a -9. My guess is that means Weeks was at least as good as Hardy this year according to their system since a -7 jump is pretty darn huge but the safe bet which this system goes with is that Weeks will be significantly worse than Hardy next year. Fielder is a -8 Braun is +2 at a corner. Cameron is +3 in CF Hart is +2 at a corner but projects to a -8 in CF (I don't think he can handle CF either which is why i added that). Hall is -1 at 3B. Only surprise in that bunch is Hall who I think is above average at 3B. Add that all up and it assumes we'll be below average defensively again next year but only by 10 runs or so which is only 1 win.
  23. Maddux and Castro are too well respected to let go. Sedar has such a minor role I don't think Macha would really care. Sveum being the bench coach is the only surprise in the bunch.
  24. 2010 is the year to trade Fielder because Gamel will likely be ready to take his place and I assume they'll finally give up on Gamel being viable at 3B.
  25. It is enough to show the team is serious and lead to negotiations at least. Not like a total lowball offer that clearly tells him they don't want him back.
