  1. They can be high on Escobar all they want but that doesn't make him a major league quality player yet. They were high on little Ben too and look where that got them. There is absolutely no reason to rush Escobar at this point.
  2. I just don't see how the veteran team with all the momentum managed to lose this one, especially with such an inexperienced pitcher finishing off the game.
  3. Tigers should probably be trading for pitching, not trading it away.
  4. Papelbon's numbers wouldn't be nearly as good as a starter and this point we don't even know if he could go 200 IP on a regular basis. I wouldn't trade Braun for him as a closer though.
  5. Chris Davis is likely their 1B for the next 4 or 5 years.
  6. Hall is the problem not the solution, I sure hope he doesn't see full time play at any position this year. Brewers shouldn't trade Hardy is my answer, not until they are sure Escobar can hit better than Counsell which I'm not convinced of. btw, Volquez had a 4.60 ERA in the second half this year and his first half 2.29 ERA was partially luck based, I wouldn't be calling him a great pitcher just yet. My guess is he is a 4 ERA type of guy next year. I don't think Sanchez is a bad pitcher either but lefties who walk a lot of guys are pretty tricky to judge. Lefties develop late and he could go the Oliver Perez path or be out of baseball before he is a free agent, you just never know with that type of guy.
  7. I'm guessing it was more the fact that Gross looked terrible in the field than anything else.
  8. Oh yeah I'd rather have Upton too, I'm just saying it isn't like their career paths have been amazingly different so far. I think Upton way overachieved in 2007(in fantasy baseball I had him on the do not touch list) and underachieved in 2008. One could say Weeks numbers have been dampened by injuries as well.
  9. He'll be 28 next year but he put up a 1.030 OPS in 133 PA last year for Texas and a 1.124 OPS in AAA in 448 PA so there is still a chance he ends up being a good player.
  10. Upton's career line is .277/.367/.426/.793 and Weeks is .245/.352/.406/.758 and Upton plays in a little bit more favorable hitters park. It isn't like there is some huge gap between these two players in the first place. Upton is Weeks with a few more hits every year.
  11. It makes at least a minor difference. Certainly as much as whether or not to bunt or whether Cameron bats 1st or 6th in my opinion. How they run the pitching is probably the #1 thing, overuse a starter and you hurt the team in future seasons, mess up the bullpen and you are almost always messing up in the highest leverage situations so it is magnified some. I have been in a workplace with bad management, mediocre management and great management and it definitely makes a difference in how I approach my job overall.
  12. I think I'll be more upset if we get CC than if we don't. He is going to get too many years almost for sure and I think it would be a terrible move for us. I'd love the move for the short term but for the long term no thanks.
  13. I think the pitching management and the people skills are the most important parts of the job. How they handle the media is the least important of the bunch.
  14. The Yankees have been cutting salaries the past few years, they might make a big splash this year but their cash isn't anywhere near limitless. They also have to know that if they go overboard it will just make MLB tighten up the revenue sharing and penalize them more and more.
  15. I'm confused by this. They are having a network devoted to baseball and they are showing 26 out of 2430 regular season games? Wouldn't you think they could show a bit more than 1 game a week?
  16. I'm probably fine with this for 2010, if this is the IF in 2009 we are in trouble though.
  17. I'm still confused why people thought 2009 would be a rebuilding year. We are losing 2 pitchers from a 90 win team, one only pitched for us half a year and the other is replaced by Gallardo. There is absolutely no reason for 2009 to be a rebuilding time. We are playoff contenders again most likely.
  18. I like the Overbay for Gross, Bush deal too. I also liked the deal that brought in Torres this year. The Cordero deal wasn't bad at all as long as Cruz doesn't end up being a stud which I personally don't think he will. Melvin has had more than 1 good trade. I do think he is probably a bit too ready to give up on pitching which can be slow to develop.
  19. Kouz came in at 4.3 runs below average defensively using this system. http://spreadsheets.googl...WuYpfdux2FC_hs6ROEQ&gid=1 I don't like basing defense on just one system though so would have to see what a couple more systems have to say before judging the numbers. I know that he is thought of as a work in progress at 3B from a scouting standpoint but that isn't always accurate either.
  20. I haven't read moneyball myself but I'm pretty sure it is about taking advantage of the market, not about 3 run HRs. OBP was undervalued when it was written which is why they keyed in on it.
  21. Rays obviously aren't a playoff calibre team because we heard all year that playoff teams don't blow big leads. Even if they somehow get lucky and win 1 of 2 at home against the Red Sox who have all of the momentum now it will just be blind luck. Playoff teams step up in the clutch and get big hits like the Red Sox did.
  22. Something like Hall and Hart for DeJesus and someone might make some sense to the Royals with us picking up someone like Crede at 3B. Not sure if there is a player that makes that make sense for the Brewers though.
  23. There is this misconception that Hardy's power came out of nowhere. 2003 - AA - 12 HR in 474 PA or 1 per 39.5 PA 2004 AAA - 4 HR in 110 PA or 1 per 27.5 PA 2nd half of 2005 - 8 HR in 208 PA or 1 per 26 PA 2006 - 5 HR in 139 PA or 1 per 27.8 PA 2007 - 26 HR in 638 PA or 1 per 24.5 PA. 2008 - 24 HR in 629 PA or 1 per 26.2 PA. You have to go all the way back to 2003 when he was 20 years old to find a significant dip in power for him (I refuse to count the first half of 2005 as he wasn't major league ready so those results don't mean much). Where he improved this year was in the K/BB rates and that is something expected from his minor league rates. I don't see much reason to not expect a repeat of 2008 or something right in line with that next year.
  24. I'm fine with Jack Z and I think he has done a good job overall but he is far from perfect too. Considering how many top end draft picks we've had during his years he hasn't really picked many successful pitchers and he has gone way too heavy on no D high SLG hitters. I don't want to lose him but I don't think it is a crippling blow if we do or anything either.
  25. This is the crux of the matter. I was not surprised one bit by what Hardy did either of the last two years and expect to see a litte more growth out of him again. This is the player I expected him to be. I question whether Escobar will ever be a league average SS overall. All I see is the next light hitting slick fielding SS who struggles to have any value at all without a good BABIP on the year. So to trade Hardy to make room for Escobar makes absolutely no sense to me in 2009. If Escobar has a big year in AAA in 2009 I could see doing this in 2010 or something but right now I just think it hurts the team.
