  1. NL 3B put up a line of .265/.335/.441/.776 this year and Hardy had a line of .283/.343/.478/.821. So his bat is good enough to play at 3B, especially if his defense is above average. I still want no part of Escobar in 2009 though, he hasn't proven he is ready yet. Not enough power, not enough BBs and a BABIP driven AVG in AA does not translate into major league success for me. He needs to grow as a hitter still.
  2. Yeah I meant if he were to start at SS next year you are looking at Craig Counsell offense. He has more upside than that. As for BABIP you can't just ignore it, it is a real factor and you can look at it and realize that his stat line is inflated and most likely not repeatable. If he had the same stat line with a normal BABIP I'd be a lot higher on him but I realize that he isn't going to be able to reproduce that stat line year in and year out without improving first.
  3. The other funny thing is they make such a huge deal about Manuel coming out and talking to the P before facing Manny and how that made a big difference in the game. Manny absolutely destroyed the pitch they threw to him but it happened to be right at Feliz. He smoked that thing and probably ends up with a single at least 65% of the time if not more, just happened to be right at someone. I know that I am living in a dream world when I expect the announcers to have a clue but it is just painful listening to this tripe during the playoffs.
  4. Lowe was an option before his post season success. Now he has gone all Suppan on us and is overpriced most likely. Especially for owners who realize he got hurt and that is why he gave up the 2 HR.
  5. Escobar is likely a below average offensive player no matter where he plays so he has to sit at SS to have any value. Hardy is an above average offensive player at SS but it is borderline at 3B. At 2B he is still above average but since his arm is his defensive strength and not his range the 2B position is probably not the best fit for him. No way in heck I mess with Hardy to make room for Escobar until he proves to me he can do it again at AAA.
  6. I personally think Gamel is the replacement for Fielder longterm and 3B is a position we should look at fixing this year. Hardy is the SS for now with Escobar maybe filling in if he proves to be major league quality which I'm not convinced of yet. Weeks is the 2B with maybe Hall/Durham splitting some time with him. Hart comes back at RF for better or worse and Braun at LF. My guess is we stick with Cameron because there just isn't much else out there to replace him with and Kendall vested his option so he is the C. So our offensive upgrades with experience and with replacing the 3B. Our pitching probably stagnates or regresses (we were 2nd in the NL in ERA so not a big surprise). Overall we are still a 85-92 win team with a shot at the wild card.
  7. Houston had a 75 win team that got hot and overproduced, don't think they are a good model to look at unless you want to just hope we win more games than our talent level suggests.
  8. Ok so I watched the entire game and the post game and nobody has mentioned the freakin thumb. Won't surprise me one bit to see him questionable for his next start.
  9. So Lowe completely dominates the phillies until he looks like he hurts his thumb. He struggles to finish the inning and comes out and gives up 2 HR in the next inning. The announcer's keep talking about it and never once mention the apparent thumb injury. Seems sort of an obvious connect the dots that they should have picked up on.
  10. Most of Escobar's stat line was built on an unsustainable BABIP though. He most likely is about Craig Counsell with the bat and a little bit better than Counsell defensively.
  11. I think a more stretched out Parra and a healthy Gallardo completely replaces one of them. We need to sign someone to replace the other but it doesn't need to be a stud. The offense should be improved next year and will make up any slippage in the starting rotation. Gallardo, Parra, Some guy, Bush, Suppan, McClung is a decent enough front 6. I'd rather the pitcher we add slots in ahead of Gallardo but as long as he is better than Bush/Suppan I think we are ok.
  12. Of course they said the exact same thing about Prior back in 2005...
  13. I'm a firm believer in the PAP system and using it to judge the future of pitchers. Here are pitchers who rated 100k+ on the system over the past 4 years 2005 PAP - Livan, Zambrano, Prior 2006 PAP - Livan, Zambrano, Harang, Willis, Schmidt, Arroyo 2007 PAP - Matsuzaka, Zambrano 2008 PAP - Lincecum, Sabathia Prior and Schmidt are more or less out of baseball now. The rest of those players spent some tmie on the DL this year and/or were ineffective for big chunks of time. Personally I think Lincecum will have had major surgery before he even hits free agency. I don't really like the idea of Sabathia, especially if we plan on pushing him so he makes that list again next year.
  14. I would gladly overpay for an elite hitter, just don't want to for an elite pitcher. The odds of Sabathia staying healthy for the next 6 years are extremely low. Only 8 pitchers in all of baseball have pitched 200+ innings each of the last 3 years. Only 15 have pitched 200+ innnings each of the last 2 years. You take it out to 6 years and the number was something like 2 or 3. He is overweight and has been overworked back to back years so I don't like his odds of being one of the rare ones that stay healthy. If we blow our wad on CC we'll probably be happy with the deal for 2-3 years and be regretting it for 3-4.
  15. I think people really get hung up on the #2 pick thing. It was a weak drafting class and Markakis is pretty much the only player drafted in the top 15 that is clearly an upgrade over Weeks. He is a cheap league average 2B right now with some upside, dont' really see a reason to give up on him.
  16. Attanasio is a smart guy so even if this is true and he led to a few bad choices I think in the long run it will be fine. Steinbrenner is an idiot with a lot of money so it is a very different situation.
  17. I think he can become an above average offensive 2B and an average defensive one. I would like to see him stay out of the leadoff spot for a year though. While he slipped some defensively at the end of the year he was roughly average defensively most of the season.
  18. The only 'aces' i'd be interested in signing are Webb and Santana. I won't lose any sleep over signing Sabathia but I think the odds of him staying healthy with ace like stats the next 6 years are extremely low. Maybe 1% or so.
  19. You won't ever solve the baseball vs football question pretty much~. Baseball is a long season where any single game doesn't matter that much, Football is a short season and every game means a lot because football has gone out of it's way to make every team have a chance at the playoffs. You just can't really compare the two. Any way you choose to compare the two sports in popularity is going to be highly flawed and the two sides won't agree on it. For me personally Football is more fun to watch than Baseball but Baseball is way more fun to follow. In baseball I can name almost the full roster of every single team and can even give a mini scouting report on the players. During the off season I still visit baseball sites constantly, look at the numbers etc. In football I watch the game when it is on and then forget about the sport completely until the next game, I probably couldn't name 5 players on some of the teams. During the off season I pretty much dont' pay any attention to it at all.
  20. Yeah, I'm pretty sure he knew OBP was a problem. We dumped Estrada, Mench, Graffanino, Jenkins, Miller who were all low OBP players in 2007. Just turns out our regulars all regressed in OBP and offset the changes. I'm actually pretty shocked that we won 90 games considering I think overall the roster underproduced expectations. We'll lose some key players next year but I still think next year's team is looking at around 90 wins again barring major injury and assuming we pick up a decent SP.
  21. I'm willing to bet as soon as Suppan gave away the game early the majority of TV's switched over to the Packers. That has more to do with it than anything.
  22. Spahn likely would be a 3.50-3.75 ERA pitcher or so in today's game. His career ERA was 3.09 vs a league wide 3.65 over his career. The NL ERA is generally around 4.30-4.50 now. Those translations are never easy to make though since every pitcher would react to the changes differently.
  23. I like pie, screw cake.
  24. Our bullpen was slightly above average and that is with Gagne being much worse than was expected most of the year and Riske being injured and pitching very poorly. Last year the flaw with the Bullpen was Turnbow's complete collapse and the whole Wise falling apart after hitting the guy thing.
  25. keep in mind the bullpen usage of today suppresses offense as well which gets hidden in overall numbers. Also teams were more stars and scrubs back in the day, you had a lot of really bad players that would never make a team nowadays and those players helped inflate the best players numbers. The difference between the best and worst players was much larger. Baseball was just very different back then.
