  1. I would hope that even the worst run teams in MLB wouldn't actually care about ERA when evaluating a pitcher with this small track record. I mean maybe the Orioles would use it but all of the rest of the teams are smarter than that. It would be like saying Hiura wasn't very good last year because he didn't get enough RBI, it just isn't a stat that means anything useful.
  2. I'm always shocked at how negative people are even when the team is doing well and putting a competitive product on the field. You would think we are losing 100 games every year and have no good players and that Mark A has just been a complete jerk the entire time he owned the team and has lied to us at every turn from reading these forums. Absolutely unbelievable.

  4. Again you are talking about a pitcher who was being moved from the bullpen to the rotation and back, pretty much nothing you said has any meaning to it. Of course his innings per start were low. ANyway not going to bother reading your posts anymore so we will just agree to disagree. You can't just look at the bad and always ignore anything good and that seems to be your habit.

  6. I don't know anything about the Brewers finances or exactly what operating costs entails but every year Forbes talks about baseball teams and every year they report 3 or 4 of them took an operating loss. It isn't uncommon at all for this to happen in MLB. I don't think it is usually happening to teams with this good of a draw though.

  8. https://www.mlbdailydish.com/2020/2/18/21142456/cardinals-miles-mikolas-injury "Miles Mikolas will have another PRP injection today. Will not throw for 3-4 weeks and then ramp up from there. Will start the season on the IL" Also Aaron Judge dealing with more shoulder problems. I said it when he first broke out, guys who are as big as Judge do not last very long in MLB. It is just too hard on the body being that large.

  10. They just showed Counsell and Holt's numbers through 639 games on mlb network and they were basically identical, heh.
  11. Look nobody is saying Houser is a lock as a starter, but nothing in the sample we have right now suggests he should be moved to relief. It is like having Lindblom come out and pitch poorly in his first outing and asking for him to be released. That is seriously the sample you guys are going off of. His 3rd time through the order is a sample of 9 innings and that is what people are using here. So far Houser was successful in the minors as a starter, has been successful in the majors as a starter and has an arsenal of pitches that suggests he should be able to turn over a lineup 3 times when it is all working. There just is no reason to not keep him as a starter until he does something to prove he shouldn't be. 9 innings spread out randomly over a full season while moving between the rotation and bullpen just isn't that sample.
  12. If Darvish starts he probably is playing. If Lester starts he isn't.
  13. Very happy with this one. Not worried at all about the infield anymore. Even if 4 of the darts they threw at the IF this year are completely worthless they still have things covered with decent players. (I'm including Healy and Morrison here which I think are likely 2 fails right off the top). I still don't get the Sogard hate btw. He has been an above league average hitter 2 of the past 3 years. I guess that bad 113 PA he had with the Brewers in 2018 is just so set in people's minds that there is no reason he can be a decent player? Since the start of 2017 including that awful stretch in 2018 he is a league average hitter. He is a slightly above average fielder at multiple positions (though not SS, he can't be more than a spot start at SS). Not sure why so many people think he has no value.
  14. Its a tiny sample size and it is a super tainted one as he was being stretched out during this sample so of course he isn't going to look as good as he gets tired from going further into games than he was used to. Those numbers don't mean anything at all. Houser has a complete arsenal and it has worked the 2nd time through at every level, there is no reason to not give him a chance to be a starter. This isn't Josh Hader who had 1.5 pitches so you knew that it was going to be a rough path to being a starter. Houser is a complete pitcher, you give him the chance to start until he actually gives you a decent sample that suggests he can't do it. Not 9 innings spread out over multiple stretches where he is being moved between the bullpen and the rotation.
  15. His minor league record doesn't suggest elite pen arm either. He maintained the elevated K rates the second time he faced every level. His control has looked good. There is absolutely nothing at all that suggests Houser can't be a starter and would be an elite RP, nothing. The only info at all that suggests this is looking at just ERA and just at the 3rd time through the order last year when he was switching from being a RP to a starter. That just isn't the type of sample you can make this kind of suggestion from.
  16. They don't realize it because it probably isn't true. He has a starters arsenal, his K rate and BB rate looked good deeper into games. He just gave up a couple more HR than you'd like which isn't a huge surprise when you are in the process of being stretched out. Nothing he has done suggests he is a RP at this point. You can make that case with Peralta if you ignore what he has done this offseason since Peralta actually has a RP arsenal, but Houser throws I think its 5 different pitches, no reason he can't be a starter. People have just latched onto he is a RP because of like a 10 IP sample while being stretched out having a bad ERA. His xFIP as a starter last year was 3.71 and it was a 3.31 as a RP.
  17. My bounce back guy is Peralta, I think there is still a chance he is a true #1 at some point.
  18. It does suck that we haven't developed more but it also sucks that every time we do develop a good one they get hurt. Sheets got abused in a year where we had no chance to win and was never fully healthy after it. Gallardo's career was derailed by his injury his first season and he never fully regained his mechanics. Nelson was just breaking out when he wrecked himself running the bases. It really bothers me more how few RP's we have developed. It is hard to develop starters but you should be raining relievers.
  19. Well projections have to include the chance for injury etc, that is why they always seem so muted. Yelich really can't do too much better than he has the past 2 years but there are lots of scenarios where he does worse.
  20. It is trying to get ahead of a problem that is getting worse. There was a big spike of position players pitching in 2018 and another spike in 2019. The players don't like it, the fans don't like it. But if it can save your bullpen the manager is going to do it. There really is nothing wrong with the rule the way it is written. I mean do you think a fan who is at a game that is say 5-1 in the 8th wants to see the shortstop come in to pitch because the manager wants to save the bullpen? I sure don't. I am curious about the question posted above. If you have a position player in and the lead shrinks do you have to take him out?
  21. I'd be a little surprised if Hader won this. Just look at Blake Treinen who in 2018 was coming off of a better year than Hader has ever had. In his 3rd year of arbitration he was given 6.4M. I mean Hader is younger and oddly has a longer track record than Blake did but that was arb 3 which means a lot. It is hard to say because the number that he probably should get is right in the middle of the two figures. But I think usually when that happens they side with the team.
  22. Again we are talking about how people felt going into last year vs going into this year. Yes I'm more confident in Houser going into 2020 than I was in Woodruff going into 2019. Davis was coming off of a season where he was a mix of injured and just terrible, Lauer is coming off of back to back decent seasons. Peralta hadn't shown anything going into last year and we were worried he was going to have to move to the bullpen plus he wasn't stretched out to pitch a full season of innings. Last year I commented before the season that the only SP in the rotation I had any faith at all in was Chacin and then I was ok with Anderson for a backup. This year we have Anderson, Woodruff, Lauer all as people I am comfortable with and I'm not really worried that much about Lindblom. He has risk just like a pitcher coming out of the minors but he is also stretched out unlike a guy from the minors. Pitchers coming from Korea have generally been successful in the majors. I just am honestly surprised that people were so much higher on last years rotation. This one just looks so much less risky on paper that I don't understand it. Anyway this isn't going anywhere so I'll just let it drop.
  23. That's why we got 5 years of Lauer for 2 of Davies? Yeah because it was just a trade of those 2 guys, weak. If that 1st part plays out that way we are in trouble. I don't believe the 2nd line at all. He is speaking expectations going into seasons. Yes I have more faith in Houser+Lindblom this year than I had with Peralta+Woodruff last year.
  24. It was misplaced optimism though. Last years rotation was a disaster waiting to happen, this years is much less risky.
  25. That would show up in the actual peripherals, not just in ERA and nowhere else.
