  1. Broken bat singles and HRs that just barely stay fair. Story of the Brewer season so far. It is a game of inches and ever inch seems to be going the other way this year.
  2. Swapping McClung and Bush could work, somehow I doubt it would be a huge difference one way or the other but you never know. I just don't want them to mess with CV and Parra because they aren't pitching like experienced guys. You have to expect some pitch count issues with those guys and some inconsistency. That is what the majority of young guys start out like. We kind of got spoiled by Gallardo since he was such a natural poised young pitcher.
  3. Berkman is a below average defensive 1B, Lee is a gold glove 1B. I'd expect pretty close offensive numbers from each of them now that Lee's wrist is healthy. Lee is a better baserunner. Berkman vs Fielder is going to come down to what you are looking for just like everyone has said. If you are talking which one would I rather have over the next say 5 years I'd say Fielder without hesitation. If you are talking just this year I'd go with Berkman every time. Fielder is in his up and coming stage and Berkman is entering his decline stage.
  4. They need to just stick with Parra and CV, these are young guys and they are going to have growing pains. Almost all young pitchers struggle exactly the way they are right now and we need these guys to get that experience and turn into pitchers and not just throwers.
  5. LD% is pretty luck driven as well though or at least it is subject to very high variance. As a fast player he should get more BABIP out of his groundballs than most as well. I've never seen a good study that suggests you can turn LD% into BABIP accurately. I would expect his BABIP to be low though because of all the popups, just not nearly that low.
  6. Thought this comment on BPro was pretty interesting. Add in all the road games we've had and I'd say better times are a coming.
  7. I think they have been more lucky than well run but it is a pretty hard thing to prove one way or the other.
  8. That most certainly could be true. I think Escobar will end up a Brewer at some point and Weeks or Hardy will end up on another team, I just can't get excited about Escobar who to me is Jack Wilson only younger.
  9. Berkman is most certainly at best the 3rd best 1B in the division, I'd take Pujols and Lee over him every time. Fielder vs Berkman it just comes down to potential vs proven. I think Fielder has the potential to put up Berkman's best season year in and year out. But if I had to pick one just for this year I'd take Berkman for sure.
  10. I think most of the problem is a combination of playing a lot of hot teams and a lot of games on the road. We are still towards the top of baseball in SOS and we have still played more road games than any other team. Give it a month and I just don't see the struggles being as pronounced.
  11. I don't see any reason to think Escobar will ever be better than Hardy. This is one of those things that just mistifies me, Escobar is empty AVG and that is it. Hardy is an ok BB rate and decent SLG with mediocre AVG. I'd expect Hardy to be a good .050 better than Escobar in OPS and Escobar to be a below average major league SS. He is backup type player. (removed picture from quote --1992)
  12. The problem is these are reactions to moves that anyone who follows baseball knew were just bad ideas to begin with. They cut bait on deals they should have never made in the first place.
  13. Yost mentioned Week's BABIP during the post game interview today, that made me very happy. Weeks still pops out too much but he has gotten a ton of outs on hard hit balls this year, way more than he should have. His AVG is mostly a fluke so far, he should be hitting in the .250 range or so and when you add in the BB's that is a .370ish OBP.
  14. There is a good pitcher in McClung somewhere, that doesn't mean he'll actually become a good pitcher though. I wouldn't point at any innings spent on those tampa bay teams as proving anything though, every pitcher for those teams was miserable because the offense and defense were both miserable.
  15. Let me put it this way, since that hot start of 34 games, the results have been mediocre at best. They are 65-87 since then, is this the sort of results that should be expected from a team that is "loaded with talent"? It wasn't a hot start of 34 games though, it was a hot 14 games. But yeah if you take out a teams hottest streak in a season you will get dismal results, if that is the point you are trying to make I agree. Otherwise your point makes no sense.
  16. If a 90 win team goes 10-1 in the middle of the season you can pull those stats out and say they are just a .500 team who got hot. Does that really mean anything? The Brewers had an 11-3 stretch last year in late April/Early May. If you want to pull those stats out then yeah we look a lot worse. However if you want to cut out the terrible stretch we had in late July/early August we look like a 90 win team. You really do just have to look at a season as a whole to know anything about it and even then it is mostly guess work.
  17. Other than a brief period of 33 games last year this team was great. On July 24th last year we were 56-44, we then went 10-23 over the next 33 games. We finished the rest of the year 17-12. This idea that we just had 34 hot games last year is just absurd. This team was good most of the year last year, they struggled in late July and all of August and choked away the lead. To take it a step further we were 9-7 after 16 games last year. So you are really trying to say we were only good for 18 games that we went 11-3 during in late april early May and stunk the rest of the season. Problem is if you take out the hottest period of any teams stats they look much worse, you can't judge a team like that.
  18. I think it is because Weeks is better suited to the leadoff role than Hart statistically. I scratch my head every time people bring this one up.
  19. If you take out August of last year and May of this year we are like 89-63 are we underrating how good this team is? If you just remove the best or worst streaks you are going to get goofy numbers.
  20. July and August is the time to discuss the hitting coach, it is way too early in the season to blame anyone for the bad start. I know people will freak out over calling this early but it is still true. April is a pitchers month and the summer is when hitters really take off as a whole. If you look at NL OPS by month last year you get april - .732 May - .726 June - .754 July - .758 August - .782 September - .784 There are loads of players off to terrible starts all over the league, we just happen to have more than our fair share of them. I'd be much more concerned with the pitching since this is when they are supposed to overproduce and they have been pretty terrible so far.
  21. Maybe if they had known they would lose 2 starters for the season before May 5th they would have gone out and got some more pitching. Unfortunately they didn't know it. Sheets Gallardo Suppan Capuano Villanueva Parra Bush That is not a bad pitching staff at all. Blend of ace quality stuff, experience and high upside youth. Sheets Suppan Villaneuva Parra Bush Weaver That is not a very good staff, when you take out 2 of the best 5 starters things change a lot. I think people are doing Melvin a real diservice over the pitching. Capuano certainly looked like a decent pitcher until his groin tweak last year and his injury this year. Gallardo put us on the map with 2 ace level pitchers followed by ok options at #3/4. Any team that loses it's #2 and #4 pitchers is going to struggle with pitching, I don't care who they are.
  22. Hardy will eventually put up OBP's around .350 in my opinion. I agree with thebruce44 completely, Hardy has had a lot of rough breaks that have suppressed his overall numbers. I'd add that he played through injury problems mid season last year too. The real question is whether or not he is capable of staying healthy for a full season or not and if he can make adjustments to where he is isn't a miserable hitter when he has minor injuries.
  23. Brewers need to get some of these excuse me hits everyone keeps getting against them. I guess that is BABIP for you. One hard hit ball and suddenly we are down 4 more runs.
  24. A strikeout isn't any worse than a ground out. It is worse than a groundball though. There is a difference in there that people seem to fail to understand. If you are looking at AVG/OBP/SLG already then the number of strike outs is 99% useless, it is just giving you information about what kind of outs he made. Striking out is bad in general because it leads to a lower AVG but if you are already looking at AVG then it just doesn't hold much value. A strike out with runners on 2nd or 3rd stinks, a groundout with runners on 1st stinks, it mostly evens out.
  25. Scouts tend to give bad information from just a game or two watched.
