  1. The last time everyone thought one of our pitchers was 'faking' an injury to give his arm a rest and save his pride was Capuano and he still hasn't pitched again this year. The odds are against him faking an injury.
  2. None of that means we can't re-sign him though. I'm sure they expect to lose him but I'm sure they will make an offer to keep him too.
  3. I dunno, the Brewers are 7-9 this year in Bush starts, were 14-17 in Bush starts last year and 16-16 in 2006 for a 47% winning percentage in games he started The Indians are 8-10 this year, 23-11 last year and 14-14 in 06 with Sabathia starting for a 56% winning percentage in games he started Over 15 games you'd expect the Brewers to win roughly 7.1 games Bush starts and roughly 8.4 games Sabathia starts. Maybe add in an extra game for saving the bullpen and you are looking at somewhere in the range of 2-3 wins, probably 4 wins tops and plausibly 1 win if Sabathia struggles with our defense behind him (shouldn't be an issue since Cle has a bad defense too). His math seems about right.
  4. It's early July....there's nothing close to "real" about it right now. They certainly look more of a reality now than they did before we got CC though. He didn't say it was a sure thing or anything.
  5. Yeah but we lose a lot of money off the books next year and then when Suppan goes again in a couple years. Mark already stated they have room in the salary cap to trade for a high price pitcher if it was the right move. Sheets + Gagne this year = Sheets next year. Then you just have to find money for Sabathia for 2 years until Suppan is gone and then Suppan+salary cap to trade for high price guy = Sabathia. I think there is room in there for both if we make a buttload in the playoffs this year. I doubt they will sign both though, my guess is they both walk if we miss the playoffs and 1 re-signs if we make them. Obviously there still needs to be money found for Fielder, Hardy, Weeks, Hart etc getting pay raises as well but we have a lot of bloated contracts out there that will fall of the books. Mota, Counsell, maybe Cameron/Kendall etc.
  6. If we make the playoffs I think we sign 1 of em, I bet Sheets is the easier deal to get done. If somehow we get hot and win the World Series I could see signing them both with the extra revenue.
  7. Any team in baseball can get hot for 2 months and make the wild card picture change. Just look at what the Orioles did to start the season or what the Nats did a few years back in the 1st half or heck even the 2004 Brewers who massively overachieved in the first half.
  8. The Cubs came out hot with most of their players overproducing, the Brewers came out cold with a lot of players slumping. Since about mid May the two teams have produced at about the same level. The Cubs talent level wasn't higher than ours entering the season in my opinion. Gallardo going down hurt more than Soriano so right now we probably are a tad behind them in talent but if we trade for Sabathia it is back even.
  9. If I had to win one game I would take Webb over Haren every time so I have no issue with that one. All Star game is about the fans getting to see the players they consider the biggest stars play against each other. It isn't about the best players. I'm sure Braun will find a way on the team.
  10. He is a #4 starter just like Bush, Capuano etc. He'll have good runs and bad runs and people will call him an ace during the good ones and useless during the bad.
  11. Hardy was very sick and lost 10 lbs just before the season started and he had some problems with his shoulder in May. I'd say those two things are more pertinent than batting 2nd vs 7th. Obviously right now he is just on a hot streak but I expect numbers around last years from him. Higher OBP, fewer HR, more 2B but around the same OPS.
  12. The best team is not the one that wins the championship. If you disagree with this statement then we probably will never agree on how important W/L is as a stat. Wins are a result, they are a terrible judge of anything though.
  13. 14-13 is my guess, I don't like this month.
  14. Good to see Dempster get messed up today. If he collapses to the 5ish ERA pitcher he should be and Zambrano struggles with injuries that isn't much of a rotation.
  15. Sure if you completely ignore the context of his post. But like he said if Damon does this all year a team of Damon's would be better.
  16. This is the other side of Marmol that so many have been talking about. He doesn't throw strikes and once the league learns to sit on his pitches more that ERA is going up up up ala Turnbow (though Marmol is better than Turnbow don't get me wrong).
  17. Bush is generally decent at home and terrible on the road.
  18. People have been saying he looks injured for some time, his Ks have been down but his ERA has stayed good. Doesn't come as much of a surprise to me. As long as their chuckle head crappy pitchers keep dominating we don't stand much of a chance. If they revert to career norms there is still a window of opportunity.
  19. There is almost no noticable difference in strategy between the NL and AL anymore, there is no reason for the pitchers to be batting. The only strategy you add is whether or not to pinch hit for the pitcher in the middle innings and which PH's to use first and the majority of the time these are trivial choices. I'll be very happy when the NL adapts the DH down the line and I'm almost sure they will do it eventually.
  20. BPro defensive stats are terrible. Most stats guys thought the Mariners were a sub .500 team, they were mostly right. This team overachieved last year and haven't done it again this year.
  21. Since roughly the all star break last year Bush has pitched much worse than earlier in his career. I can't say why though. Ks down, BBs up, GB% down. Pretty much worse in every area. ERA doesn't really show it from his splits last year but the first half stats were luck influenced and the 2nd half stats were just bad and his 2008 stats so far are deserved according to his peripherals. As much as people like to joke about it, the stats guy on this forum do not use stats as a tool to protect the players on the team from criticism. It is simply how we evaluate players in general.
  22. So am I. To be fair I'm waiting for it to drop out on Dempster too. It just baffles me to see a bad RP turn into a decent SP.
  23. Part of it is drafting philosophy I think. We draft for player's bats and hope the defense comes along. Twins seem to go after more complete players.
  24. So is this a coaching issue or just our team has a lot of players who can't stay focused for a whole game. We make so many of these little mental errors that it is just disgusting.
  25. Wow this didn't end up in the right thread at all.
