  1. I would be shocked if Hardy never hits 20 HR again as he hit at a 20+ HR pace the 2nd half of his rookie year, the first month of his 2nd year and all of his 3rd year. It might be just 20 or 21 HR but he has that type of power.
  2. So we have a 5 game losing streak, fell under .500 and into 4th place and Ned's idea to fix this is to sit two of our best hitters in Hart and Fielder. The timing just doesn't make any sense to me.
  3. Hardy has been all over the place so it is hard to tell what he is going to be. Here are his month by month OPS's since he started hitting decently in the 2nd half of his rookie year. .801 .680 .949 .772 .515 (only 9 games) .869 .961 .685 .558 .821 .744 .603 .603 (only 4 games) He has been an above average offensive SS for most of those months but he has had some stinkers in there as well. To complicate things he had that really nasty virus in spring training and they said he lost 10+ lbs. As soon as I heard that I traded him from my fantasy team, every time I hear that kind of thing happen to a player it seems to hurt them for a month+.
  4. It isnt' safe to say this at all. He had a month better than this last year too but you don't judge a player by one month.
  5. The average hitter is better so pitchers have to throw maximum effort more often. If you stick a great pitcher from the 60's into todays game their innings per year would go down and their ERA would go up. The game has just changed.
  6. The Brewers OPS against by pitcher faced is still hovering right around .700 so it isn't quite as bad as it looks. We are stinking up the joint but considering the number of road games and the OPS of pitchers faced it should be expected that we are struggling.
  7. I know, I know. It's a long season and you can't play every game like it's the playoffs. It's a tough balancing act to be sure. But notice Florida lifted their guy last night at the first sign of trouble in the 6th. Obviously you can't do that every night. But I think you do see other managers who are better at deciding which games to "go for it" and which ones to just let play out however it happens. Piniella and Bob Melvin come to mind here. Florida was off on Monday and their starter pitched 8 2/3 innings on Tuesday. It is pretty easy to baby your young pitcher who is already at 92 pitches in that scenario.
  8. I dunno about the Volquez trade, sure he is pitching well but Hamilton is having an MVP type season as well. We would have been fine with pitching if we didn't have two pitchers go down for the season before May 5th.
  9. I'd say we are more like the 2008 indians. A team who got off to a slow start.
  10. Weeks has a higher career OPS than Matsui, is younger and has more upside. He is a better baserunner as well. I'm not sure I can see Matsui being better than Weeks. As for Fielder vs Berkman it is pretty close so I'd have to go with the more sure thing in Berkman since Fielder has only done it once.
  11. I guess part of the question is expectations. I expect Gagne to have an ERA in the 3.50-4.00 range so his start doesn't bother me that much. If people out there actually expected him to be a sub 3 ERA guy then yeah, he isn't that anymore.
  12. The Cubs are now 3-8 in their last 11 games. Eventually the Cards will hit a rough patch too, we just have to keep plugging away. Losing Gallardo is a huge loss but it doesn't mean we are out of the playoff hunt.
  13. There are a few pitchers who can consistently sit with a higher LOB%, Riske seems to be one of them. Mota has not shown this ability at all in his career, if he keeps up this high LOB% it is mostly smoke and mirrors and we got lucky.
  14. Yeah his numbers are pretty terrible, I don't think he has pitched well this year he just hasn't given up runs. big difference.
  15. So what that pitch f/x data shows is that about 23 strikes were called balls while he as on the mound so far. He is getting pinched overall. Some of those balls are blatant strikes, some are on the corners of a normal strike zone, a couple might be from having a small batter up etc. Obviously we'd have to compare it to your normal pitcher to get clean results but from a very simple diagnostic standpoint it looks weird to me.
  16. Something isn't normal about a shoulder injury? Something isn't normal about a tweaked groin (I know at least 5 pitchers who have had that just in April), something isn't normal about a strained hammy (at least 4 pitchers in april this year), something isn't normal about a jammed finger (very common). The only goofy injury Sheets has ever had is the inner ear thing.
  17. I seem to remember the Cubs being out by like 7.5 games last May... how did that turn out?
  18. Hardy is the guy who needs to swing at the first pitch more, seems like every AB he watches a fastball right down the middle and he is a fastball hitter so he cannot afford to be working from behind all the time. The one thing I'd tell Weeks is to expand his strike zone with 2 strikes on him. He seems to always be watching strike 3 on the corner.
  19. Only 3 of them were in April, just to nitpick, heh. I just bring myself to worry about Gagne for some reason. He has pitched ok overall, he just has blown some saves. If Weeks doesn't make an error on a double play, if Yost doesn't bring him in when he pitched too many days in a row we are not worried about him anymore. If the ump doesn't blow the call last night we win that game too. While he has blown 5 games and has an ugly ERA it just seems like he is pitching ok overall and not getting any breaks more than he just doesn't have anything.
  20. Actually we would be 1.5 games out of 1st still. We have only lost 2 games in which Gagne blew a save.
  21. I still don't get where all the Hardy hate comes from. He had 2 bad months last year and 1 bad month this year and that is it since the all star break of his rookie year. He has been an above average hitting SS for most of the last 2.5 years. He is an average fielding SS. Sometimes being an average player isn't a bad thing you know. Escobar doesn't excite me at all, he seems to be the next Jack Wilson to me.
  22. Stetter pitched 2 innings yesterday so I'm not surprised if he wasn't as sharp as before.
  23. I swear we give up 3 or 4 little infield or weak bloop singles every game lately.
  24. Fielder's career OPS in close and late situations is .921 compared to .906 total. His career OPS in high leverage situations is .964. Whatever he is doing it seems to be working ok.
  25. Not to mention most of his blown saves have been kind of goofy. 1) Very poor conditions and first game pitched 2) HR that barely made it over the wall at the shallowest part of miller park 3) Pitching on 100 days in a row and obviously had nothing and gave up the pair of HR 4) Terrible throw to 1B by Weeks lets in run 5) Bad call at 1B, bunch of bad strike calls. He had 17 K and 5 BB going into this game so not like the control has been a problem all year. I'm personally not ready to give up on Gagne because he should have never pitched in #3, he shouldn't have had a blown save in #4 or #5.
