  1. I don't really think the second half thing is as bad as people think it is. In 2003 we played our best ball all year in August. Our second half looked a lot like the first half. In 2004 we had the big collapse but most of it was regression to the mean. In the first half we played over our heads and then most of the 2nd half collapse was a miserable month of August, in Sept we actualy had a decent run differential but a bad record. In 2005 we had a better record in the 2nd half than in the 1st half. In 2006 we were decimated by injuries in the 2nd half. It stinks that we are playing poorly now but I don't think its somehow some mystic second half mojo of Yost at blame.
  2. That would be LaRussa, he's one of only a few good managers in baseball, most of them are just kind of there.
  3. I wouldn't say it makes you a bad fan at all. Yost is at best an average manager and could be below average. I don't see a compelling reason to fire him mid season but I won't lose sleep over it if he's gone at the end of the year either.
  4. I never could hate the Cubs for some reason(other than Sosa, I hated him), I despise the White Sox which made that world series win of theirs about the most painful thing ever though. I don't have anything against the Cardinals, they just have been in 1st almost every year recently so I'd rather see someone else up there.
  5. I'm rooting for the Cubs because if we aren't going to win the division I'd rather the Cubs did than the Cardinals. Plus I think the Cubs are more likely to choke it away. There aren't many managers in baseball that I think stand out but LaRussa is one of them and I don't think the Cardinals team chokes late in the season. The best case scenario is probably a split but if one of them has to take 3 I hope its the Cubs.
  6. I predicted 83 wins at the start of the season, I still like the prediction. Sadly that might be enough to win the division. Maddux is still a good pitching coach, Yost is just a guy.
  7. Yeah I think he probably does. His shoulder has been fine and he had a finger injury that can happen to any pitcher. He's thrown the ball extremely well even with the injuries which is why i didn't really get your point about him not doing well the last 3 years when he was playing.
  8. Lineup looks fine to me, Gross is generally decent for OBP and Weeks wrist is going to make him miss time, to be honest Counsell is probably an upgrade overall. I don't know why Hart is sitting but its not like he's been hitting well either so no real complaints.
  9. Players work deeper into counts now, pitchers throw more pitches that are bad for their arms. The average hitter is much better than before so you cannot just pitch to contact unless you actually have good control. The average pitch per PA has gone up by 0.2 in just the past 18 years, they didn't keep data back in say the 50's but its been suggested that the average pitch per PA was up to a full pitch lower. There were a lot fewer walks back then as well. 300 innings in the 50's is probably more like 220 innings is now for pitch counts. A strong correlation has been found between big jumps in innings pitched and injuries, I dont' see why you would want to increase Parra's chances at an injury for next year.
  10. Lee sucker punched Young and then ran behind his manager like a girl, but he definitely landed a punch... well more of a slap.
  11. His stats over the last 3 seasons would probably put him in the top 10 pitchers in baseball if you extrapolated them over full seasons. I guess I fail to see what you are getting at?
  12. regardless of the specific example, we've had plenty of bullpen usage since August 8th and I have to believe there was at least one or two situations that he'd have made sense in.
  13. How many games is Bell getting suspended for for being unprofessional?
  14. Braun has hit the ball way too well to bench him over his defense. You send him out there, hope he improves and just add it to the long list of reasons that young teams are so inconsistent.
  15. Weeks is a pretty terrible 2B still. He's statistically the worst 2B in baseball using RZR. UZR has him costing the team a run every 5 games or so. He's not making the errors any more but this team needs Braun and/or Weeks to improve on defense a lot more next year with the young pitching that we should hopefully have.
  16. I think whatever moves we make its very important to bring in good defensive players. This teams defense is why its not sitting on a 5+ game lead right now, its one of the worst in baseball. Bring in a legit CF, play Hall in LF vs lefties and have him be the super sub against righties.
  17. See my post called the Rotation for details about our defense~ We are the 2nd or 3rd worst in the NL at the very least and its why our pitching has been so bad.
  18. I'd move Weeks who is still terrible in the field before I move Braun. Weeks isn't making the errors but his range is pathetic. Braun is still learning the position so there is some hope that he can improve. Of course unless Weeks starts to hit he wouldn't have any value anywhere but CF.
  19. The argument wasn't that he is pitching well, the argument is that judging him by the losing streak is silly. If Parra pitches over 150 innings his chance of injury is going to be very high. He pitched 85 innings last year, 91 the year before and 73 the year before that. His all time high is 138 IP. There is absolutely no reason to have him go over 150 innings this year.
  20. Vargas has looked worse than Capuano, has less of a track record and doesn't go as deep into games. It just makes no sense at all to me to take Capuano out of the rotation. Last night Capuano pitched fine, the defense failed to make plays behind him. He only walked 1, he wasn't behind in the count all night, he got ground balls when he needed them, the defense just failed to turn those ground balls into outs and they had a big inning. I'm not saying Capuano has been an amazing pitcher, but he isn't the worst guy in the rotation right now, hasn't been in the past and I doubt he is in the future. Not to mention the fact we don't have anyone to replace him with. Parra cannot start the rest of the year, his arm would fall off.
  21. If he puts Capuano in the bullpen it will be one of the better reasons I've seen to fire him. So how long do we let this guy struggle? If Hardy needs to be in the 8-spot for three days, Crapuano certainly could benefit from a few days in the bullpen to work on his issues. And he certainly has been very unlucky, too. I'm not denying that. But this is a pennant race. You can't afford inaction right now. While Suppan has shown signs of life at times, Cappy has been crappy pretty much since May. Vargas has been struggling just as much, has less of a track record and generally has more problems going deeper into games. If this team is going to have a shot at the playoffs it needs Capuano in that rotation and pitching better. Since May 28th Capuano has gone 7+ IP in 4 of 12 starts, while not stellar its better than you can expect out of Vargas. Last night he didn't pitch that poorly, his defense failed behind him pretty much.
  22. If he puts Capuano in the bullpen it will be one of the better reasons I've seen to fire him.
  23. As long as you are judging pitchers by their last 2 games and by their ERA you are going to hear it, those are terrible methods for judging pitchers. Part of the problem is the perception that Capuano was a good pitcher going into the season. He was extremely lucky in 2005, his ERA should have been 4.50 instead of under 4.00. In 2006 he cut his BB rate in half and he looked like a much better pitcher but the BB's have gone back up this year and he's back to being a 4.50 ERA type pitcher, one who has a bad babip and lob% which is varience more times than not. The team itself is struggling because its not playing very well, we are right at our expected W/L record so there is no luck involved in that.
  24. The first question is how bad has cappy been during the streak. It has been very ugly but he has lost the following games as well.. 7 IP, 2 ER 7 IP 2 ER 7 IP 2 ER 8 IP 1 ER Obviously the losing streak is not all that big a deal, he should have won some of those games. The next step is looking past the luck stats and comparing this year to 2005 (assuming 2006 was a fluke). This does not include today's start unfortunately. 7.79 K/9 vs 7.23 K/9. His K rate is up which is good. 3.62 BB/9 vs 3.74 BB/9. His BB rate is down which is good. 43.4% GB vs 37.7% GB. His GB% is up which is good. 1.02 HR/9 vs 1.27 HR/9. His HR rate is down which is good. Now lets look at the more luck based stats. .332 BABIP vs .291 BABIP, he is giving up more lucky hits. 67.4% LOB vs 77.3% LOB, he is giving up more runs when guys get on. Capuano is pitching better than in 2005 with worse results, sorry to say but there is nothing 'wrong' with him other than a little bit of bad luck and maybe an even worse defense than last year. This can be said of our entire rotation this year, we either have just had terrible luck or our defense is a significant notch below the last two years, take your pick but there is no reason this rotation should be worse than last two years from a pure pitching standpoint.
  25. This team has no heart, if they had heart we'd have 100 wins already.
