  1. Well his OPS did jump 72 points as well. Yeah the jump from 2004 to 2005 was huge, but only because in 2004 he was one of the worst players in baseball.
  2. This trade idea gives me a headache. Its hard enough making a trade between 2 teams much less a trade involving half the league.
  3. When your team is starting Shannon Stewart every day you are in trouble. He's been hurt 2 of the past years and posted a .705 and .714 OPS the past 2 years and doesn't have much range in the OF. They'd be better off starting Nix or Clark full time than Stewart.
  4. Anyone else having a lot of problems with the feed, the video keeps cutting out and the audio is breaking up some for me.
  5. I missed the start of the game, I notice Vargas had 3 K's, 4H's and pitched 2 innings. Did he come out and throw a strong second inning or did he struggle both innings and just give up the 2 runs in the first?
  6. Yeah I guess I was arguing 2 different things, I set out to prove the 1st 15 pitches are generally bad for all pitchers with that table. There are also sample size issues at play, when you are dealing with such small numbers it takes a good 6 or 7 years for things to solidify.. Looking at Schmidts career numbers he's .703 .637 .711 .712 .660 .741 .695 with a .698 overall.
  7. Except you weren't right. You remember a few times when he got banged up early and they stick in your head when the reality is he's no different than any other pitcher over his career.
  8. Santana - pitches 1-15 - .733 , inn 1 - .681, overall - .592 Oswalt - pitches 1-15 - .785 , inn 1 - .687, overall - .694 Carpenter - pitches 1-15 - .690, inn 1 - .624, overall - .645 Halladay - pitches 1-15 - .589, inn 1 - .639, overall - .650 (freak!) Peavy - pitches 1-15 - .678, inn 1 - .687, overall - .670 Zambrano - pitches 1-15 - .692, inn 1 - .597, overall - .646 Mussina - pitches 1-15 - .724, inn 1 - .732, overall - .723 Once you get into the mediocre pitchers I tended to notice that they had a lot more troubles in the late innings but they still trended to have higher 1st inning reducing until the 4th where it spikes up again. Sheets is kind of a strange case with the 3 year splits. In the past 3 years he's had 278 AB's against him in the 1st inning which I didn't really feel was enough AB's which is why I looked at his career trends. In his career he's been .740 OPS against 1st inning, .718 OPS against total which is right in line with the majority of those pitchers I listed.
  9. 3 year splits for sheets Innings 1-3 - OPS against .624 Innings 4-6 - OPS against .686 Innings 7-9 - OPS against .646 Just one more example of someone posting stuff without any real evidence to back it up. Btw, almost all pitchers have higher OPS in the first 15 pitches than the rest of the game, its just how things work, Sheets doesn't lose because he gives up runs early, he doesn't give up runs in any different pattern than other pitchers in baseball. Looking at pitchers in general they all give up above average runs in the 1st, then are strongest in 2nd and 3rd and then tend to have problems in the 4th and then again in the 6th. Sheets seems to follow the exact same pattern as every other pitcher i look at.
  10. Bases loaded no outs and K followed by popup.. the more things change the more they stay the same.
  11. The pirates already have 2 catchers they like on the roster so not sure they'd really want rivera. I think I'd rather just play Braun at 3B than do this deal because if Turnbow does turn it around he has a lot of trade value and Marte is just a declining loogy at this point.
  12. I don't really think they are going to trade him but if they do it almost has to be for pitching help. That team has a decent young core of hitters but the pitching is still ugly.
  13. The point of trading Jenkins is to free up a spot for Gross to play, I think if we are going to trade him we should get back a RP or a stopgap at 3B if needed.
  14. Jenkins isn't hold enough to play for the Giants. Lance Nix is a hard player to comment on because you can sum up his career with one word, Injured. His stats have no meaning if he somehow gets healthy.
  15. Melvin Mora? No thanks. Graffy/Counsell would probably put up about the same numbers as he did last year.
  16. Yeah I thought about Barrett but its just hard for me to compare catchers to other players with the reduced playtime. The fact is sanchez brings BA and a good glove and thats about it and I'm just not a believer that he can sustain that BA. He's going to be a .300 hitter but he's Overbay with less power playing 2B. A solid player but not a spectacular one. I'm also not as big on Bay as others are. He had a great May and they walked him a lot since there weren't any other threats in the lineup but overall last year he took a step back in production and I don't see anymore serious growth out of him. I think of him as the 2nd tier star not the top tier 1. I'd put Pujols, Berkman and potentially D. Lee in that 1st tier.
  17. Berkman, D. Lee, Ramirez, Rolen, Pujols, Bay, C. Lee, Soriano, Hall are all players I'd put on my team before Sanchez. So he probably has a chance at #10 and thats assuming Dunn's bat doesn't rebound, Fielder doesn't improve etc. Next year when his average regresses to the lower .300's (he won't have a .370 BABIP again next year) he's going to put up Casey type numbers which just don't excite me.
  18. Sanchez isn't one of the top 10 players in the division and might not even make top 20 if you are including pitchers.
  19. Jenkins his righties extremely well when he's hot and decently when he's cold Jenkins his lefties decently when he's hot and extremely poorly when he's cold. This has been true of him ever since I started watching him play 5 years ago. When he's seeing the ball well he lays off the sliders and takes a lot of balls to the opposite field against lefties. When he's not seeing the ball well he just K's constantly. I think if he's managed properly he could have the best offensive season of any player on the team from a rate standpoint, just a question of whether Yost can use him properly and whether or not Jenkins ego will get in the way. I'd still rather see us trade him and start Gross though. I still think 2007 is a growth year and 2008 is the first year we make a real run at the playoffs so Jenkins won't be around for it regardless.
  20. Shandler does it as well. No clue how reliable his reliability ratings are though.
  21. Jenkins is the best OF on the team against righties. I'd hate to see losing him for nothing as well. The simple fact is that keeping him doesn't make sense when we have a younger player with pretty similar numbers on the roster who is payed a lot less in Gabe Gross.
  22. I consider Hall a below average defensive SS whose strong tools are range and speed and weakness is in throwing and fielding the ball smoothly. I think CF will maximize his strengths and hide his weaknesses in the field. We won't know until we see him out there but I personally think his value could easily go up in CF.
  23. Hardy is a better defensive SS. Hall is more athletic so can play CF where I don't believe Hardy could. Both of them have more potential than our 3rd OF slots do or any FA currently on the market. I really fail to see the problem. I think people really underestimate Hardy in general because of the bad start to his career with the slow 1st half of 2005 and the injuries. I don't want to just give up on the guy when he's a very fluid SS who would still be valuable even if he never posted over a .750 OPS and I think he has the potential to sit around an .800 OPS in the future.
  24. The average fan underrates both of these players, a player capable of posting an .850+ OPS against one handed pitcher is valuable to most teams.
  25. All players are streaky, every single one of them.
