  1. There is no way to build the perfect team. Get to the playoffs and get hot at the right time has been the theme, nothing else. The past 10 world series winners have all been built differently and all have just been the team that got hot late and had some luck with health. The Royals team as an example is not built any better than the Pirates, they just got hot late. It is all a mirage. Happen to be the team that plays well late in the season and you win it all, just like in the NFL. Being the best or building it the right way is not really the key.
  2. Players who strike out too much only stick around the league if they have other tools that make them valuable. Pitchers who don't strike out a lot of hitters only stick around in the league if they have other tools that really make them valuable (low BB%, heavy GB% etc). This tends to weed out the poor high K hitters naturally and it weeds out the poor low K pitchers as well. So if you take the star players out of the equation for a moment you are not going to survive as a mediocre hitter with a ton of Ks because it will drive your OBP down too much and you aren't going to survive as a mediocre pitcher without a ton of Ks. This skews things towards Ks not mattering for hitters as much as it does for pitchers.
  3. One year of an 32 year old, injury prone, platoon 1B whose defense is likely pushing him to DH for the Mariners is not worth more than this, it just isn't. Lind has some value against RHP but not a ton of it given all of his limitations. We were not going to get any sure thing prospect for him. Last year was nice and all but his previous 3 seasons combined were for negative WAR as in he has been below replacement level over that time. His poor defense and baserunning just eats away at whatever value the hitting gives him. All 3 of these guys are plausible major league players. They are young and there is no way to know if they'll make it or not obviously but again we were not going to get sure thing talent for him no matter what. I'll take my chances on 3 younger guys over the marginal AA guy who we still wouldn't be sure is a major league arm that he would have gotten if they went with an older arm. If even one of these 3 makes it as a bullpen arm down the line it is a positive return for Lind.
  4. The team opened with a playoff capable team until 2015, can't really complain about the direction they went. Maybe in 2014 they could have traded away assets but the season just didn't go a direction that made sense for that with the hot start and then fading late with all the nagging injuries the team had.
  5. There is no reason to think they are unlikely to amount to anything. All three project as plausible major league arms even if they end up being bullpen guys. Lind was pretty much worthless to this team and if he was just released would probably get a one year deal worth about what he is getting payed now. The only argument I can see against this deal is that the team needs a 3B more than pitching but they can find a 3B with other assets.
  6. This is great news.
  7. One bad year almost never kills someone's trade value. If he get off to a good start he will be easy to trade mid season.
  8. Can't remember the last time a team built to win a world series actually won one. It is usually the team built fr solid depth that wins it. Not the team that looks one piece away that signs the big FA to win it all. The Nationals and Tigers are example of teams built to win a wild series. giants and Cardinals are built for the playoffs. who has won more?
  9. Considering I think anyone over 50 is flawed at running a baseball team I have high hopes. The old school is deAd and worthless at this point for the sport.
  10. Consensus was slightly above .500, not below. But yeah this seasons path is much better than lasts. If you are going to derail a season with one awful stretch you are better off having it early than late.
  11. It is fun to go back and read this stuff but nobody is really right or wrong. There was no way to predict how bad they would be in the start of the season. Since then they are around .500. Seasons are many times defined by one hot or cold streak. That is why even the best projection systems don't look good at the end of a season, baseball is just too erratic.
  12. I am not a fan of the Pirates rotation in a playoff setting. Cole is great but Liriano tends to break down late in the season and Burnett is erratic these days. They have pitched above their heads this season most likely and it is not a strength for them imo. The rotation had a sub 3 era through June and now it is closer to 4 for the season.
  13. The Peds used in today's game are nothing like the ones Sosa and Bonds used. The subset of players who got suspended barely dropped production at all. It is much more likely that his thumb is the issue. He is also trying an experimental treatment so of course you haven't heard of this before. It used to be you had surgery and it either worked or your career was over. Also the number one reason offense is down is defense. The combination of defensive shifts and shift towards better defensive players has crippled offenses. I'd expect to continue to see the death of the pull power hitter. Very few of them left out there compared to even 5 years ago.
  14. A lot of people have assumed that our owner meddled in some of our big name signings. There isn't even a tiny shred of proof that it is true. Not saying it isn't mid you, just that people like to make things up at random. Same reason people mistakenly call Nelson Cruz a throw in when we traded him.
  15. Brewers bunch as prospects and not even close for me. Knowing the steroids issues and weeks injury issues I'd take the Cubs group over what we got out of the Brewers group though.
  16. Every single World Series winner in the past 10 years had added players at or near the deadline. They just aren't always high profile. Parra is a 4th OF on a hot streak, not a key piece of the team. The only plausible ways to win it all for us is to push all in on years we look set to make a run or to do massive overhauls constantly until we hit the jackpot on a few prospects at the same time.
  17. Parra likely takes a QO as well. Some players didn't this year that were borderline and they ended up taking lesser deals. parts falls into that range of player. This is a nice trade.
  18. Hopefully they get a good look at how awful his bat is and mediocre te defense is despite his reputation and we can dump him from the 40 man at the end o the season.
  19. If I've learned anything it is that no matter what we do people aren't going to be happy with it and any season that doesn't end in the World Series is a failure no matter why it happened. Zobrist and Parra are nowhere near the same player and fit very different needs. Ones value has little to do with the others.
  20. The gane winning HR without a doubt. Most no hitters the game isn't on the line and you felt you were going to win for most of the game. Not having any hits is usually just a few lucky bounces. When you are behind late and still win it is he most thrilling part of the game imo.
  21. Segura probably needs to show he is trying to improve his plate discipline to have any real value. If he were sort of stagnant but was at least learning to take a walk I'd have a lot more hope for him. You have to be a very special player to walk as little as he does and still be a good hitter.
  22. Probably should but a couple more wins in a row and I bet they don't. This is sort of that awkward scenario that I thought might happen and has. The Brewers have mid 80 win talent and the front office knows it. It is easy to just dump that when your season is hopeless but this glimmer of hope is going to make them pause most likely. Now you reach a point where part of the fanbase is actually upset if you sell anyone big. It is just a cruddy spot for them to be in. Unfortunately this season just like the last 2 is going to be derailed by one just awful stetch. If they could ever have a season where they keep that awful stretch to just bad they would probably make the playoffs. 4-17 (.190) in 2015 3-15 (.167) in 2014 6-22 (.214) in 2013 Stretches like that are complete season killers. I mean I hope they at least trade 2 of Ramirez (yes he does have value), Parra, Broxton and Segura.
  23. Yes!!! Cherry picking a select portion of the season in which they are *almost* .500!!! It isn't cherry picking when 2 weeks into the season I said this is a low to mid 80 win team and would play like one from this point on until they trade players. This site overreacted to the bad site to a truly pathetic degree with many players saying it was a sub 70 win roster and it simply was never the case. There is a subset of this forum that seems to get so happy every losing streak about how they are right that Melvin is awful and the franchise has no future that it drives posters away. I know I almost never visit the site anymore because it is such an overly negative environment. For once I wanted to say something positive.
  24. Brewers will be 30-31 over their last 61 games soon. Seems more like an awful first 2 weeks derailing a season than the worst franchise in the history of the game that many on the site want you to believe lately.
  25. Would take a large stretch of reality to say Melvin ran the team Into the ground.
