  1. No spot in the order comes up with the bases empty more often than a leadoff hitter, especially in the NL where we pretend pitchers can hit. That means that OBP is king since you want them to get on base. That heavy power is generally wasted since it gives more of an advantage in lower parts of the order. It also makes strike outs not hurt you so they no longer matter much other than the fact that K generally are a negative for OBP. It makes walks just as good as singles. It also means that speed is going to be more helpful since you will usually be on 1B or 2B with no outs when you do get on and speed is at its premium at that spot. So the absolute best leadoff hitters are guys that can run who get on a lot, probably don't have a ton of power but can still take a walk and if they have to get those walks by getting strike outs too it is no big deal at all. The biggest misnomer I've seen is those who believe that K's are somehow bad for a leadoff hitter, there is no spot in the lineup that they hurt you less in. OBP is pretty much king. If you K to the point where you OBP stinks that is an issue but outside of that they just don't matter.
  2. Ramirez was great for half of the season last year and part of that half of the season was in the 2nd half, stop trying to post small samples to try to prove he is done because it just makes you look foolish. Here is a small sample for you, from June 12th until September 2nd he posted an .869 OPS. He wasn't just awful all 2nd half, he had 2 slumps, one early in the season and one in September. We have no idea what he is going to be this year. Sorry but this stuff drives me nuts, at least look at what you are posting before you post it. He had a crappy final 3 weeks just like most of the offense did, it doesn't mean he is just done and should bat 8th. Posting only his 2nd half splits doesn't come close to showing the truth, his slide in the 2nd half was almost completely the final 3 weeks. Was he tired? Was he hurt? Did we just face good pitching since everyone slumped? Did the whole team give up? Who knows. But he didn't fall off the entire 2nd half like you want to say he did. It is hard enough to judge a player by a single full season of PA but when you start dissecting it to smaller samples you can make the data look any way you want it to. We just have no idea what he is going to be this year. He could be done, he could be an all star, both are just as likely.
  3. Parra's two Gold Gloves say hello. Derek Jeter had 5 gold gloves and he was average at best at his position, this really doesn't mean much. Parra may be above average but he certainly isn't 'gold glove caliber'.
  4. Um, Khris Davis was hurt at the end of the year last year so yeah of course Parra started more. Had nothing to do with anything.
  5. Injuries and slumps are such a part of baseball that I'm sure they will both get plenty of PAs.
  6. They are working on expanding media sharing. The Brewer's team salary is going to go up before it goes down almost for sure.
  7. If Scooter stays Scooter he may not be much more than replacement level. Huh? He's been about a 2.5 WAR per season player so far in his career so he is average to above average. He is nowhere near replacement level. I dunno if he can do that while playing every day mind you but if he stays what he has been is way above replacement.
  8. Baseball is by far my favorite sport and it is the thing I spend more time than anything else on. I want the games to be shorter. I don't think I'm outside the norm here. I have a lot of different things pulling my time away from me, this one can easily be shorter with some small changes that won't hurt the quality of the product. I applaud them for doing this. I hope the new guy has the balls to push the DH into the NL too since that is so long overdue. "That is how the game is supposed to be" is just a weak argument for anything and that argument seems to be holding the game back more and more. Lets go back to no pads in the NFL, gee that would be a great idea since that is how it is supposed to be.
  9. And yet before July 1st he was exactly the same as he was the year before. The be so sure he is just done based on half a season is just foolish. Most players don't fall off a cliff unless they get hurt, it is almost always a gradual decline. We have no clue what to expect from him but it is just as likely he is back to an .800ish OPS as anything else.
  10. This is not a case of time softening memories. I was kinda in favor of keeping Braun at third from the get-go, even with the .895 FP and the three errors every two weeks. Probably the most vocal about keeping him at the hot corner. Maybe the defense was a small minus, but the bat of the 2007-2012 Braun is a plus the size of Cleveland. In any case, it'd have been easier to find an outfielder who could deliver an .850 OPS than it is to find a third baseman who does that. And Braun's OPS over those six years was .943. The Brewers took a heavy offensive downgrade at third base. I just disagree then. Braun might honestly have been the worst player to ever play 3B in MLB history, he was seriously that awful at it. Add in the extra chance to get hurt playing on the IF and it just makes no sense at all to try him at 3B ever again. 1B I get, 3B just no thanks, waste of talent.
  11. Oh yeah I missed the Davis part. The odds of Davis not making the starting team is pretty close to 0%.
  12. If it is the Braun of 2007-2012, I dispute that he'd be a disaster. We'd be having a guy who lead the league in SLG twice and OPS twice, and whose average OPS over those six years was .943. With the 2007-2012 version of Braun, I can live with 26+ errors at third base. I think, in this case, the bat largely outweighs the defensive issues. Braun was one of the worst defensive 3B in the history of the game. Assuming his 3 year average for offense he would be a below average player once you add in his defense at 3B. If anything he is a future at 1B but playing him at 3B is a complete waste.
  13. Braun would be a disaster at 3B. I don't know what to expect from Aramis this year. He had 3 awful months, 2 great months and a pretty average month. Just seems like a streaky year rather than him being 'finished' like people want to make it out to be.
  14. Sigh. I fear you are right but that is a simply awful bench. If 2 guys get hurt at the same time which seems almost impossible to not happen, this team is in huge trouble.
  15. Team salary is just going up so if you defer money you are saving money overall. It is probably a good thing overall.
  16. This is the first round of changes. If this reduces even 5 minutes per game it is a success and is a move in the right direction. You can't change a players approach at the plate, just the timing of said approach.
  17. Fangraphs WAR is completely flawed in this case as I've pointed out to them multiple times. They try to correct for LOB% and BABIP but assume that HR/FB is all pitcher skill. It is like they try to correct for half of what is out of the pitchers control and ignore the rest. Just going with straight ERA based WAR is probably more accurate than what they do. xFIP has been shown to be a better measure than FIP for predicting the future in every way and his xFIP has been relatively consistent. It is probably more accurate.
  18. Pretty much expected this. More bullpen depth is never a bad thing so I'm fine with it. Wish we had signed a MI who could also cover 3B though. That is going to be a huge need in the future. I like this more than a trade for Papelbon so I guess I see it as a win.
  19. When they rerun games on NFL networks with just the snaps and plays they fit the game into a 30 minute window including commercials. They usually do cut out a few non important plays though. It wouldn't surprise me if an actual NFL game is under 20 minutes of time. They replay baseball games on the MLB Network just showing the final pitch of each AB and those are about 30 minutes long too.
  20. Football is a once a week game that is generally outside business hours. Football is built so that it is watchable no matter what. But I will say that football games are too long now too and they are trying to find ways to make them shorter as well.
  21. Sounds like conspiracy theory to me. Pretty much everyone I know thinks baseball games are too long and that includes many long term die hard fans. Ryan Braun does not need to adjust his batting gloves every single pitch and delay the game 20 seconds every time. It has just reached absurd levels at this point.
  22. Star Wars night there are supposed to be characters from the movie doing things at the stadium. Don't really know what and I assume they aren't the 'real' characters.
  23. I have to think that expanding the roster would just mean more RP which are generally already overused at this point.
  24. Greatest of the really really old teams - 1927 Yankees. Greatest of the really old teams - 1953 Dodgers Greatest of the old teams - 1976 Reds Greatest of the newer teams - 1999 Indians
  25. My guess is Weeks didn't want to risk injury by moving when his contract was almost up and it was clear we didn't want to keep him. Then in the offseason it became clear he wasn't going to get offered a starting job at 2B so to get a contract he agreed to work on OF. Just a guy taking care of his own interests instead of the teams.
