  1. The floor/ceiling stuff is a descriptor of how well he can/will be able to play baseball. Not sure why it's junk? I can play baseball. My floor is very low, as is my ceiling. They are arguably the same height. Ironically, we both have similar floors and ceilings. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif Maybe junk was the wrong description. I get the concept, maybe I'm not as advanced in my thinking. If I have a low floor and low ceiling then I'm not a good baseball player. If I have a low floor and but a high ceiling then I'm bad right now but potentially great? If I have a high floor and low ceiling then I'm good now but can't get much better? I don't know I think it leaves too much open to interpretation. To each their own I guess. It kind of sounds like there's some political correctness to using them....me: "Yuni, you're really not a good baseball player" Yuni: Hey, why the hate man. I just have a really low ceiling.
  2. Can somebody tell me if our 1st round compensatory pick is lost if we don't sign the pick this year? Or are teams continually compensated for picks that don't sign?
  3. That pretty much sums up my feeling as well. I don't follow college ball enough to know these guys other than what I read written by others who presumably do follow these players. I will say this though, and maybe this is why I'm not a GM, but to me the high/low floor/ceiling stuff is junk. My question is can the guy play baseball? It is as simple is that. To me, if you have to qualify your pick by saying something to the effect of, "we like the skill set he brings", but the guy has no history of being able to get results with that set then there's no point in drafting him. Like I said, I don't have any idea where our current picks fall within that, but if they have had success in the past then I give them as good of a shot as anyone else drafted in that position to be successful. Thanks Listach for the list and links.
  4. Agreed. In regards to Posey, he wasn't blocking the plate but it was within the rules. If Posey's off his knees he's not hurt, so it's just one of those freak injuries. It shocks me every so often when people are mad that injuries happen in a sport. That said, I don't like allowing collisions at home plate or letting the catcher block the plate. What really is the point of it? Why can't the runner be impeded going to other bases then? It really makes no sense. You have 2 grown men colliding, one running full speed and neither with protection (no I don't consider catchers gear protection in this case). Instead of trying to make over the All-star game perhaps the powers that be can focus on some of these types of rule changes. On a side note, it should make for an impressive brawl somewhere down the road!
  5. I agree with you on this game. You can dig to find what went wrong but in the end their stud bats out hit ours.
  6. Man, tough loss!! A wasted start by Marcum. The Reds are going to win a lot of games when their opponent only scores 3 runs. I hate that almost all MLB managers won't use their best reliever more than 1 inning. The result may not have been different though. Need to stay positive and get the next series.
  7. It'll be interesting to see how he does if he's called up. He really doesn't have much left to prove in the minors. Although, sometimes a short stint in the majors can bring out some flaws that might not otherwise get seen. I would love to see him come close to what Braun did when he was called up and have him be the face of the franchise in Toronto for years to come. It would be great for him and the fans.
  8. Well, definitely disappointing, but it was our 5th starter and the offense did show some life after getting down so I'm not completely upset. The Reds are hurting pitching wise right now though so it would be nice if we can take the next two with our 1 and 2 guys going.
  9. We'll I stand corrected I guess. I'm still not confident in a full come back but at least they've gotten back into it.
  10. John Danks is stuggling to start the season, but has a solid track record the past few seasons. I've seen rumors that he might be pitching himself out of a starting role. Not sure if that's true, but if it is would the Sox be willing to part with him with anyting that we might have? I'd love to put him in the 5 spot in the rotation and shift Narveson to the bullpen. Seems like something that's really not likely to happen, but with the poor start for the Sox, Danks struggles, Guillen as manager, and a GM who has a history of being more than willing pull the trigger on a deal it might be worth looking into. Anyone else think this is a possibility?
  11. I think you can go get him now. Don't have any inclination that there might be a comeback today. Have to get one of the next two. I know I'm giving up early but they're on the road and down big.
  12. Still in the mix. Oh brother. I, again, want to just talk this up to manager speak. I will say this about DRP, he doesn't usually say things he doesn't believe. Not necessarily a mark in his favor in this case.Yikes, with both Morgan and Gomez healthy Kotsay shouldn't be in the mix for anything except a few pinch hitting opportunities and Gatorade attendant.
  13. That's a pretty nice lineup on paper. Maybe the best I've seen this year. 2-0 SF. Hopefully they hold on and we continue to stay hot!
  14. Couldn't' have said it better myself. You will always have some that believe the game is played in a vacuum and feel small ball strategies can't work because some stat doesn't justify it. Of course, if somebody has a conflicting opinion on something it must be fact. I can't say that I always agree with RR decisions and I do believe the team is overly aggressive on the bases at times, but to his credit he hasn't backed off his philosophy. Honestly though, probably 99% of hard core fans dislike the manager of their team at some point. It kind of comes with the territory I guess. You're hired to fired as they say.
  15. Yikes, that's a tough schedule. We should have a good barring on where we stand after June. 8-4 at home and 5-10 on the road. 13-14 looks about right. I'd like to give them more credit after the home stand but that's an awfully tough schedule. At least it's broken up some without an overly lengthy road trip.
  16. As Crew said it's going to be a challenging June, so the 8-1 home stand was great! Hopefully we can carry the momentum to the road and put some distance between us and Cinci.
  17. I'll give him a B-. Honestly, I don't think his lineup and bullpen management is much different than most in the league. That said, I don't like his man love for Kotsay or Gomez in the two hole. I'm probably higher on his bullpen management than most and actually believe some small ball is a good thing. I do think he has the players borderline reckless on the base paths, however he's consistently reckless so oddly enough that makes me okay with it. To me in game strategy is secondary to how hard the players will play for you. As long as you have the players in your corner and playing hard then I think you have 3/4 of the job covered. We'll see how the season plays out.
  18. Wonderful gesture from a guy I really don't like. I guess maybe it shows that most everyone has some goodness in them. Just because you might be a jerk in many areas of your life doesn't mean your a jerk in all areas I guess. Again, very nice to see! It's unfortunate that a person can't so something nice for somebody without having his motivation questioned. In this instance, I'm not questioning his motivation. I'm still baffled how someone gets beat within an inch of their life in a parking lot full of people with nobody stepping in. Kind of a sad society we live in.
  19. Nice win and a well executed play! I'd like to give RR credit for a well managed game. That's going to annoy some, but if he's going to be ripped on for some of the losses he should also get some credit when things are going well. I don't know if I'd have made that call, but it worked to perfection. While I believe the Brewers have been a bit reckless on the base paths under RR, I will say I give him credit for being true to his word and not backing down with the baserunning. If you're going to be uber aggresive on the base paths then I like to see it consistently and RR has done it that way so I can respect it. Let's finish off the home stand with a series win tomorrow!
  20. I agree on Kotsay, he needs to have his role reduced to full time bench player. I'm hoping for a straight platoon with Nyjer and Gomez. I'm not really sure what to expect though, but to me if you give them both the platoon role based strictly on handedness of the pitcher there's nothing for either of them to complain about and the role is clearly defined. I think that keeps everyone happier in the long run. No evidence to back that up, just a gut feeling.
  21. Yikes, that was close. Reaal Nice! Excellent come back win!
  22. He looks to be ok as a LOOGY. On a side note, how does a guy maxing out at 83-85 MPH on his fastball reach the majors?
