  1. I might agree with you more except that he's proven that he can get results without needing to throw hard. Pitchers are coming back fine from TJ surgery these days; I'd say last year is a good indication his arm is fine. I know Marcum's not an elite number 1 type, but the Brewers haven't been able to attract/pay a free agent pitcher of Marcum's quality....well... ever. I'm not suggesting they go crazy overpaying him, but a reasonable extension would make a lot of sense to pursue. When they made the trade they had said that part of the reason they made the deal was that Marcum was open to negotiating an extension. Obviously they have plenty of time to work out a deal if they want, but I'm wondering if he's taking any offense to being so far apart with the Brewers thus far and if it would affect any future negotiations or if it's strictly business and it doesn't really matter.
  2. Is anyone else somewhat concerned that the Brewers and Marcum appear to be heading to an arbitration hearing? I realize they need to make sound financial decisions however, if they're looking to sign the guy to an extension I'd be a little concerned that they're not exactly building much good will with the guy. Who knows though, by tomorrow they might have settled or even worked out an extension. It just seems like something that should've been hammered out all ready.
  3. Glad my kids haven't reached that age yet! Guess somebody on the staff has too much time on their hands. Decisions like that really annoy me too. Worry more about educating the kids and less about small matters like valentines. Let the kids have some fun with it for gosh sake.
  4. Honestly, Pujols is a freak of nature, but I'd almost..ALMOST laugh in his/agents face if they're asking for a $300 million deal. I think it's laughable to suggest he 'gave' them a hometown discount all ready. That depends on how you look at it. Some of those years were arbitration years being bought out (at least one, but maybe someone can help me out). Yes, he probably left 4-5 million on the table for each year after that so I guess it's reasonable to assume he left 20-30 million out there. I'm sure he made part of that decision based on the surroundings, security and comfort. To me he's trying to hold the organizaiton hostage a little bit by trying to leverage what happened in the past. Albert is good for the Cardinals, however the Cards were also good to him. As good as he is, he's going to regress and any deal that pays him for his current ability 10 years from now will be a horrible deal. Heck, in 6 years it may be a horrible deal. Any deal that goes 10 years for Pujols you'd think would include a buyout option. I actually like what TwinsBrewersWS suggested in the original post for a salary structure. It would be a horrible loss for the Cards and their fan base but life will go on after A.P. Everyone's time comes to an end. Albert has quite a few good years in front of him yet but I don't think the Cards will meet his supposed demands.
  5. Besides Miller Park I've been to new Busch, Wrigley, Cinergy, Veterans, and PNC. I can see why they tore down Cinergy and the Vet. as they were awful. I went on a small baseball roadtip a few years back and the gametime temperatures were in upper 80's-90's but the actual temperatures inside those stadiums was crazy hot, it almost made the games unwatchable. I like new Busch alot. We went down for a game last year and were treated great by the fans there during and out after the game. I would go back there for a game without a second thought. PNC was probably my favorite, I basically agree with what Polish Falcons had to say; the view from the inside the stadium is phenomenal. I'd really like to get to the East coast and see Fenway and Yankee stadiums and for some reason I've always wanted to get to KC.
  6. Wow, didn't see this one coming. I can't see how this makes any sense for the Angels. Wells is a nice player but he's made a killing off his supposed elite 5-tool talent. He's almost under life-time prospect status. Every year since he's been like 19, I've heard about how he's the next big thing and he's going to have his break out season. Don't get me wrong he's a good player, but for an organization I thought was pretty smart I just lost some respect for the Angels on this one. I also agree with Joepepsi on this one. I never really understood why Napoli didn't start on a more regular basis. I know he's not much of a catcher, but the guy has proven he can hit ML pitching at a pretty good clip.
  7. Micah Owings. I'd give him the 25th spot on the roster and put him the "Brooks Kieschnick" role. He might actually be a better hitter than pitcher. I still think he's got some potential.
  8. TOSHIBA!! Dear Toshiba your customer service is beyond a joke. Charged full price for power adapters that WERE returned to you. Look, customer service lady, I can't control how fast the mail or your processing dept. enters information but just because your records say you didn't receive the USELESS pieces of crap that are still under warranty doesn't mean I didn't ship them back as soon as humanly possible. Oh, did I mention that YOU have the non-working adapters in your possession and since they don't work they're clearly not worth the $320 you charged us!!! Continually repeating that the "facts" of what's in your computer system on when you received a return doesn't make it correct. And me telling you that our business will no longer use Toshiba products if we aren't refunded the money isn't a threat (as you put it) it's also a "fact". Turning your back on thousands of dollars a year for two power adapters that didn't work in the first place that you have in you possession doesn't seem like a good business practice to me. Thanks to all who took the time read my rant. Anybody else have any experience dealing with Toshiba. Do I have any recourse here?
  9. I'm dying to know what #2 was on your list...Ha! Guess I was overly excited about this one. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif 2. See #1
  10. Thank you for a place to be a fan again. Another subject, but some of the radio stations should give this a try for the Packers talk. Wow, you'd have thought they lost to the Lions 31-10 in week 1. Anyway, the Crew will win the World Series because: 1. 3 Aces. I use that term more loosely than some but they have 3 pitchers that when they take the mound I'm confident in a victory no matter the match-up. We bring back one of the top offenses in the National League, after an off year by Prince and basically zero production at SS. 3. This team will fully expect to make the play-offs and compete for a WS. I don't care what anyone says, player's' focus and motivation is greater when there's a legitimate chance to compete and win. I expect monster years from Braun, Fielder, Weeks, Greinke, Marcum, Gallardo... well pretty much everyone. 4. There will be an unprecedented home field advantage at Miller Park. No evidence to back this up but it sounds good and it'll be fun to be there for sure! I'm sure I could find more. I can't really put my excitement for this season into words. On a side note, I'm thinking this might be the year that my Nieves jersey looses some value as I'm feeling like someone may pull a No-no out of the bag.
  11. I really wish some other team would've ponied up for Garza. I'm not going to try to find a reason that suggests that Garza isn't that good or he'll probably regress. The guy's a top of the rotation starter coming into his prime. The bottom line is the Cubs got better and it makes be kind of cranky because now I'll have to hear from my Cub fan friends on how well the Cubs rotation matches up with anyone in the division. Nice grab for the Cubs, but I still like our chances. Indeed, the NL Central will have some nice pitching match-ups this summer.
  12. Chin-lung Hu, from my limited research, would look to be a nice fit. Kind of an all glove and not much bat type, but I don't really care about the bat. The Crew's offense is fine as is. If Betancourt's defense is as poor as suggested and he has a weak attitude I don't think that will instill much confidence in our staff when they are looking to force a ground ball and turn two. Found a small write up on him at the Hardball times here for those in the same boat as me who haven't heard of him.
  13. Young talented pitching is the most sought after commodity in baseball and the Brewers now have 3 studs in the prime years of their career. I'd make those moves every single time. Yes, we gave up a lot, but we got what we needed in return. Our offense is good enough right now; we just needed the pitching. If either or both Greinke and Marcum sign extensions the trades are huge wins for the Brewers. As it stands right now I think both are still huge wins. As a small or mid-sized market team your window will be slim and the Brewers have amassed enought talent to have a legitimate shot to win it all IMO... for at least two seasons barring injuries. Unless you're the Yankees or Red Sox, that's probably the best you can ask for. The point of the farm system is to collect enough talent to win at the major league level. While Greinke and Marcum aren't homegrown talent, our system in an indirect way did the job it was supposed to do. I've been a Melvin supporter, but I'm shocked at what has taken place over the last couple weeks. I'd still like to see a different shortstop, but that seems like it might be nit picking at the moment. I thought this was an interesting perspective by Joe Posnanski over at CNNSI. Edit: I guess I never really answered the question, but yes I think Melvin did better than signing Cliff Lee.
  14. Chad and Jamie, I'm very sorry for your loss. May God grant you strength and peace to move forward.
  15. Good call, I agree. Betancourt should not be an option.
  16. How about both! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif. Take Blanton and his salary for some mid-level prospects. Deal Axford, Gamel and Narveson for Shields. Of the two options I'd still rather have Garza and lose Axford and Gamel.
  17. Interesting name to throw out there. He had a nice year last year. What was the deal the 2 years prior; I don't remember was he hurt? He only pitched 120 innings each year after his stellar 2007 season. Has anyone seen him pitch enough to know if he has some upside yet. I never really thought of him as a hard thrower, but I noticed fangraphs had his avg. fastball at 92. Not overpowering, but harder than what I thought. He's still young enough to improve so it'd be worth investigating
  18. I would think Narveson deserves a shot before Parra does. Also, comparing Pavano and Blanton is a fruitless endeavor. For as much as everyone wants argue about it, they are not that much different performance-wise.Narveson, Parra, whoever.... Either one is not really a great option. I'm not sure what Narveson has done to 'deserve' a shot, but that's fine, I still think Parra has the bigger upside so I put him there. I will agree that the difference between Blanton and Pavano won't amount to much, however I will stand by my opinion that Blanton's the better pitcher and will come at about 2-3 million cheaper over the next 2 years. I don't believe Blanton will cost any significant prospects in return. Yes, I would love for Melvin to acquire either Grienke, Garza, or Shields if the price is reasonable. I don't want them to gut the farm to get one though.
  19. I don't necessarily like Blanton, but it seems like a perfect opportunity for the Brewers to upgrade the staff at a reasonable cost. I certainly like him better than Pavano. Keep our prospects and have a battle for #5 during the Spring. Maybe during the second half guys like Rogers, Jeffress or Rivas can give us a boost with some impactful starting pitching. Gallardo Marcum Wolf Blanton Parra?? Eehh, it could be worse. I'd rather do that then send LuCroy, Cain, or Escobar packing.
  20. I'll be the first to tell you I don't have a great understanding of some of the more advanced pitching metrics out there. I know that Suppan had an ERA+ of more than 105 for 7 out of the 8 years before joining the Brewers (baseball-referece.com). To me that's consistently at least slightly above average. I stand by that I believe the comparison is fair, although it's not fair to assume that everyone's career will progress the same way. I don't hate Pavano, but for the money he will get I'd rather put some money towards a couple 1 year reclamation projects (as Pavano was a few year ago), rather than sink any of our resources into a commitment to him. Like I said before, I could live with 2 years because he's better than our current options at 4-5. I'd just like to see some other options explored first and if another team wants to jump the gun on him then so be it.
  21. Maybe a combination of Harden and Brad Penny could give them between 160-180 decent innings each on a 1 year deal. It seems wishful, but anything is possible in the offseason!! Give them the 4-5 spots out of the gate knowing at least one is going down and have Parra or Rogers ready.
  22. Plain and simple, before coming to Milwaukee Suppan was consistantly an above average pitcher. He hit the wall in Milwaukee and his career regressed quickly. I think the comparisons to Suppan are fair, in fact I would say that Suppan was clearly a better pitcher when he came to Milwaukee. The contract obviously wasn't a good deal. Yes, Pavano is better than Looper. Most of Looper's success was as a reliever prior to Milwaukee. I wouldn't consider the Looper deal to much of a hinderance though. If they can get Pavano for two years I think it's OK. I agree, if that's the cost to get Greinke it's way too high for the Brewers to pay.
  23. O.K. Here goes my 3 way deal from the depths of my wanna be GM mind. Angels get: Fielder (Brewers - contingent on signing mega-deal extension) Upton (Rays) Brewers get: Garza (Rays) Eric Aybar (Angels) Napoli (Angels) Rays get: Escobar (Brewers) Peter Bourjos ( OF Angels) Hank Conger (C Angels) Rivas (Brewers)
  24. I agree. I don't know what their financial constraints are, but it's not like either Garza or Shields is making a ton of money or their going to lose them to free agency.
  25. Why, why, why... This would definitely offset my happiness from the Marcum trade. Pleeessseee let him sign with the Twins. The worst part about a Pavano signing would be it probably indicates we're done trying to acquire another legit pitcher.
