  1. I couldn't agree more. For two years the guy might have been the Brewers MVP. Somewhere between being a stud utility guy and mashing 35 HRs and now he's lost everything. He's not even a respectable platoon guy anymore. Even his solid defense can't make up for his offensive shortcomings. I think it's time the Brewers just cut ties with him and wish him the best at reviving his career elsewhere because right now he's taking up a valuable roster spot and doing nothing to validate having it besides having a fat contract. No disrespect to Hall, who seems to be a stand-up guy, but some new scenery would be best for both the Crew and him.
  2. Good read and interesting stuff. I actually think we're kind of on the cusp of a transitional period in the philsophy of the game with regards to defense. There are stats that have been in place for a few years now such as zone rating that are widely available and I'm sure have been tracked longer than fans have had access to them. I don't know the others or really even the specifics on that particular one but they're there. I also recall reading a SI article earlier this season on how teams were starting to focus on defense more. They highlighted the Phillies and Rays as well as the Mariners. Anyone else recall that article? Anyway, teams and GMs seem to be more aware of the value of good defense and I think those elite defenders will start to be paid more in line with their ball mashing no defense playing counter parts. The technology is certainly there to do it.
  3. Let me say first I think the Brewers should shell out the cash for Prince. The Brewers haven't had too many true difference makers in the lineup over the years and now they have two in Fielder and Braun. With those two locked up for the next 6-7 years they can scatter in the younger talents from the farm and bargin vets every year and still have a solid offense no matter who's around them. However, in the spirit of the thread, maybe Tampa will be willing to shell out for him (prospects and the cash). I know they're not a large market team, probably more financially strapped than the Brewers at this point, but they do have a new stadium on the horizon and have got the pitching to spare. Tampa gives two of Wade Davis, Jeremy Hellickson, and Matt Moore, plus Desmond Jennings.
  4. I can respect people's reasoning for wanting Gamel back in the minors if he's not getting a full time shot, but if he's our best option for that roster spot regardless of service time then I think he belongs on the roster. If we're a last place team with no shot then yes, I'd want him in the minors not accumulating service time. He is getting at least part time duty with the Brewers and is a valuable piece of the bench when not starting. He's been playing long enough that his skills aren't just going to magically evaporate by not playing every game. He's getting big leauge experience and that in my opinion will help him progress more than dominating triple A. Monty I agree that Macha does seem to be a "prove it" guy. I guess with his resume it's hard not to back his philosophy. I think as the season progresses Gamel will be the starter at third. Maybe making the young guys "prove" they should start is part of how he gets the rest of the team to buy in to his decisions. Also, it's a lot harder for a veteran who could lose his job (i.e. Hall) to have much of a complaint if the younger/inexperienced guy legitimately shows he's better than him by outperforming him at the ML level, not just at AAA.
  5. 16-10 They finish with a flurry and go 7-1 in the last 8. 10,9, and 8 from Prince, Braun, and Hoffman for 27 in the tie breaker.
  6. Not sure if this name has been brought up or even if he's available but what about Jeremy Guthrie from Baltimore? I can't say I know much about his contract status or what the O's would want in return, but they have some needs on their infield with Mora aging and a hole at SS. Huff is aging and probably do for a raise soon. Would they consider Taylor Green and a few others? I guess I'm not sure how highly the O's regard Guthrie, but he's had a couple nice years against some good competition in the East.
  7. Really, Sell?? Wow, one forgettable series at the hands of a 1st place team in their ballpark and we should be ready to sell? Yes, the Brewers have some pitching issues and their hitting can be inconsistent at times but that can be said for about every team in the N.L., except maybe the Dodgers so far. They're certainly not the Yankees, Red Sox, or Dodgers, but they are good enough to make the play-offs. The Cards rotation is really no better off than the Brewers. When completely healthy the Cubs have the superior team, but as we sit right now they're still behind us. I'd say buy. I understand that a play-off trip may hinge on Parra coming back and being as good as many think he can be or acquiring a Cliff Lee type, but I'd be willing to take that risk rather than sell and hope that we're in better shape 2-3 years from now. There's definitely a time to sell but in my opinion this isn't one of those times.
  8. I agree with the notion that he doesn't quite have a hold on who he is as a pitcher or at least he's forgot what got him to this point. He's falling behind almost every hitter. That by itself is enough to set him up for failure. I do think some time in Nashville maybe with a little less pressure would do him some good. He looks like he just needs to start from the beginning again. Throw strikes, be aggressive, blah, blah blah. Kind of the token thing to say, but sometimes it's easier said than done. His overall stuff is probably the best on the team, but there have been plenty of pitchers who throw hard and have good stuff that never amounted to much. Here's to hoping Manny finds himself for the second half play-off push!
  9. If the Brewers weren't winning nobody would care about the untucking. So, I'll take it as a compliment that the classy team from the south cares how we celebrate. To be fair about the St. Louis fans (in my one experience). We were at the game last Sat. in St. Louis and treated very respectfully. Granted we weren't heckling people around us, but we did cheer the whole game and not one word of negativity was said to us. It took until 12:30 that night and quite a few drinks later for someone to finally tell us to go the f! back home. Oddly enough, it was disappointing it didn't happen sooner.
  10. Man that one killed me. Easily my favorite Brewer off all time thus far. I can still remember seeing him in the Toronto uni doing a press conference after he signed. I just wanted to cry.
  11. I'm happy the Crew just let it slide this series. The games were too close to put extra guys on. Although if one of their future meetings gets lop-sided one way or another I can see some form of retaliation. To me it was just too obvious. A fastball in the middle of the back of your best player. On a side note, I really dislike the way most umpiring crews handle these situations. They let an obvious hit batter slide and then the first time the opposing pitcher comes inside and nicks a batter warnings are issued and that pitcher is penalized for the first guy who blatantly drilled someone and he can't pitch inside anymore.
  12. I don't think he's necessarily throwing anyone under the bus. He was asked a question and responded with his feelings at the time. It's obviously a response of frustration, but the truth as well. I actually think that while he was speaking he may have had some regret to the way he worded his comments about the pitching and continued with saying the offense and defense were bad as well.
  13. The fan in me wants to see Yo v. Lincecum. In the big picture I don't think it matters, although I don't get the theory that he isn't mentally ready. I think he probably has the best composure of any pitcher on the team. Could be part of a little mental game Macha is playing, but I guess I don't know if that is his personality or not.
  14. You're correct there isn't any hard evidence. My point really wasn't that I think Aaron used PEDs, but that there have been and will be cheaters in the game that hold and break records and unless they're going to go back and re-write all of them it doesn't seem to be appropriate to change one.
  15. You can't just remove one record from the books. Bonds wasn't the only one using, and I also agree there's no guarantee that some of the great players from before "the steroid era" weren't on steroids as well, Aaron included. Maybe instead of trying to redo the past all involved should be trying to secure the future of the game. I still think the current substance abuse policy/system is a joke and an insult to everyones' intelligence. I know the player's union is strong, but I'm surprised some of the clean players haven't banned together to help push the issue.
  16. I also think teams should split T.V. revenue, but all in all the balance isn't all that bad. If your team doesn't have a chance at the play-offs every few years then your front office is to blame more than the economic conditions. I would argue that baseball actually has the best free agent system with compensation picks going to those who lose their stars.
  17. Good stuff RockCo. Just goes to show how quickly things can fall apart. My worst day as a fan was when Molitor signed with Toronto, he's still easily my favorite Brewer. Injuries and horrible front office moves really derailed a promising team. The Vaughn trade was maybe the worst in franchise history. There are certainly many similarities between the two teams and situations. A few setbacks and we could end up in the same position, however I think the current farm system is much stronger and we have more competent individuals making personnel decisions to hopefully stave off a complete collapse.
  18. Talking to them about how bad they are or about how Milwood was once a decent young pitcher and about how Pidilla is a lifetime prospect? I certainly hope we're not talking to them about Milwood or Pedilla to aquire one of them!
  19. Hopefully this one dies right where it is. Cameron for Melky is not an even trade and for the Yanks to want us to pick up ANY of the contract is ridiculous. Seems like the Yanks think they can just bully other teams in to what they want. I can't really consider moving Cameron a salary dump when he's only signed for another year. He's easily worth that 9.5 mil. It'd be a different story if he was under contract for 2-3 more years, but for one year I don't see how trading him for inferior talent makes us better now or in the long run.
  20. If Figgins were available along with some pitching (those named already), I'd maybe consider that.
  21. I'd really like Sheets back. Hopefully there were no bridges burned. I'd also take Johnson. I think both could be had for short-term deals and are the best options available. I also like Lowe, but his price seems to be escalating. I'll take who we have over everyone else on that list considering the money and/or picks that would be involved.
  22. I think the Brewers are more in need of some batters with a different approach at the plate to balance the lineup, but all things being equal another left handed bat wouldn't hurt. How about Fielder (yes, I realize he's left-handed) to the Angels for Figgins, Kendrick, and Adenhart. (Is that overvaluing Fielder??) Then, as some have discussed all ready, make a play for DeJesus and Teehan from KC. Maybe for Weeks+??. They could play Teehan or give Nelson a shot at first. Teehan and Figgins would also give them some defensive flexablility. Seems like more of a fantasy game idea than realistic, but that's what the off season is for I guess. Figgins S DeJesus L Kendrick R Braun R Hart R Teehan/Nelson L Hardy R Kendal R
  23. Trade Weeks and Hall for Swisher and Vasquez. Interest the Angels in Fielder instead of Texeira. Trade Fielder for Figgins, Kendrick, and Adenhardt or Napoli/Mathis. Move Swisher to 1st base. We end up with a more versetile and better defensive team. Sign Damaso Marte. Bring back Shouse, Branyan, Kapler and Torres. 1. Figgins 3b 2. Hardy ss 3. Swisher 1b 4. Braun lf 5. Hart rf 6. Kendrick 2b 7. Cameron cf 8. Kendal c Bench 1. Branyan 2. Escobar 3. Kapler 4. Gwynn 5. Napoli Staff 1. Yo 2. Parra 3. Vasquez 4. Bush 5. Suppan Bullpen 1. Marte cl 2. Torres 3. Riske 4. Villenueva 5. McClung 6. Shouse 7. Coffey
  24. Count me in for Garland as well. I've succumbed to the fact that the Brewers will have neither Sheets or C.C. next year. I do think there are some decent arms on the market to be had for a reasonable price though. I also wouldn't mind Derek Lowe, Jason Jennings, or Oliver Perez. Somebody also mentioned Wheeler and Soriano. I think they would be welcomed additions too. Rocco Baldelli would be interesting. He's kind of earned the lifetime prospect status with all his injuries, but when he's healthy he sure looks like he can be a force.
