  1. I've read a surprising amount of comments on this board that JJ is merely an average fielding shortstop with suspect range. I disagreed. Watching JJ in the field, and without using metrics, I was convinced that JJ is a well above average fielder. Apparently, there is at least one system that agrees with me: John Dewan's "Fielding Bible" ranked JJ third in fielding among Major League shortstops last year. Same system has Prince near the bottom for first basemen.
  2. Hart will have a huge year in 2009. Especially if we trade him...
  3. What was his injury?
  4. Once again, I agree with Ennder: The NFL setup has problems. Salary cap creates too much parity, resulting in too many vanilla flavored teams. Combined with the silly scheduling, and you end up giving crappily run teams an advantage over well run teams. Still, the MLB system needs some fine tuning. The Brewers got punished for being competitive. That ain't good; particularly with the Angels getting the first. Kinda smells like the Wall Street scandal; like the rich rigged the system.......
  5. No. Use the money to sign our younger players. Lowe is the kind of guy you trade for at the all star break.
  6. I read a report that the Brewers are close to signing Looper. He ain't a season changer, but he adds depth as a fourth/fifth type. I like it, depending on the price. Hope they aren't thinking of him for the pen. EDIT: Title -PF
  7. Carlos Lee for Cordero was a great trade. We got Lee for Podsednik, who Melvin got on waivers. Overbay, essentially a spare part, for Bush, was a very good trade.
  8. I agree with Trwi; we need to sign Sheets or add The Unit. That being said, the other remaining free agents would not improve the rotation more than a young arm from our farm. Save the money: I am more concerned about the lack of a legit closer. I am hoping for a trade for BJ Ryan or a Fuentes signing. Otherwise its Villanueva and McClung. Yuck.
  9. Marmol's biggest problem is overuse and abuse the last couple of seasons. For that reason I agree that some chickens will come home to roost (probably in his elbow because of the way he throws that slider), and that he will be more hittable.
  10. Yeah, offseason is not what I wanted so far. However, this ain't the same situation as the 90's, but you did point out some troubling similarities. The big difference, I think, will be whatever trades Melvin makes before next spring. That's the only way to fill the big holes in the roster (although bringing in the Big Unit for one year would be interesting; if he pitches as well as last year, it would be like signing Sheets for one year, but without the longterm risk). I think Weeks, Hall and maybe Hart will be moved for pitching. Jeffress and Weeks to the Orioles for BP help and a 2B? Hall and Hart to the Giants? If Hart is moved, could we make a move for Abreu? Mark and Dougie have shown willingness to take a risk, and we have enough young talent to make a significant move without destroying the future. That is the biggest difference between now and then. Gotta pull the trigger though.
  11. Bad risk for Cleveland. Not only injury prone, but inconsistent. Plus, no Marmol to set him up and bail him out. They will get one good year from him before the arm woes return. Dougie must be looking at a trade (BJ Ryan?), because we have little chance at getting Fuentes. The Brewers do not have a young arm ready to take the role, so is McClung or Coffey gonna be our closer? Better not be planning on Julio..........
  12. I like it. Young, can throw hard, good control. Garbage arms are set. Now sign a closer and a starter. I think they are gonna make a big offer to Fuentes, or wimp out and sign Hoffman for one year.
  13. Dunn would be interesting. But if we add Dunn, we'd need a better hitting catcher in the lineup.
  14. Maybe not a good trade for 2009, but two or three years from now, could be very good. Particularly if we get a young arm.
  15. Why would you believe anything he is saying? Bet they sign Hoffman.
  16. I agree: we had plenty of late inning hits to win games. But, maybe if earlier in the games we had more people on base for the sluggers, we would not have to win so often with ninth inning homers.
  17. I wonder if losing Maddux will have a negative effect?
  18. Yes, the impact of hitting coaches is over-rated, but I think they are important in shaping the individual and team approaches to situational hitting; i.e., convincing guys to hit the other way to advance runners, taking more pitches or being more aggressive, shortening your swing with two strikes. Don't care who the coach is as long as he gets them to believe and think about their approach at the plate.
  19. Hall and a prospect for Sanchez makes more sense. If we want a young, wild, power arm with a bad ERA, we could bring up Jeffress.
  20. Brewers already missed the chance to move Weeks. He is not moving to center, and he will not be moved in a trade unless he is a spare part. He will either prove himself at second next year, or become a bench player.
  21. What would it take to get Crisp from Boston? Crisp might solve the leadoff problem.
  22. Didn't think I would, but I cried. This team makes me feel like a kid again, like I did when baseball was everything..........
  23. Today, Sept. 28, 2008!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Brauny and CC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
