  1. Yeah, there is definitely a way the lists could evolve to make them better. And to echo the point about cost, Dave Cameron recently talked about what a nifty deal the Rangers worked to get Gallardo. Meanwhile Huston Street of the sub 90 mph fastball is angling for a contract similar to the 4/36 one that Robertson got (I hope I've got that right) a role that Knebel may fill for the Brewers, SSs are still a commodity and Diplan looks much better than most July 2 lottery picks. If one guy works out, Melvin wins big, 2 or 3 its a jamboree. And Jimmy Nelson may not be far off from what Gallardo would produce. Cameron in his last podcast talked about how the Dodgers were the only team he believed to have both improved their future and present in the offseason. I'd say the Brewers might have.
  2. Here's Jon Heyman saying they're in it: http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/writer/jon-heyman/25073909/moncada-market-yankees-dodgers-red-sox-and-some-surprises
  3. There are some that emphasize ceilings. They all consider floor and proximity. McDanels even has a "risk" rating. Cameron describes the Fangraph list as balanced.
  4. Cameron should talk about flaws in the process that lead to poor performance by his and other prospect evaluators. I don't expect it though. The latest Fangraphs list is absolutely loaded with guys who "if" they hit, walk more, develop a third pitch, gain command, et cetera. Ask why player X isn't on the list and its not enough hitting or walking, pitcher Y, he's only got 2 pitches! How many pitchers in the minors are similar to Duane Underwood - 40 or so? Why is he on the top 100 while most or all of the others aren't? Its pretty tough to come up with an answer other than he's in the super system of the year. That's not to say there isn't some canned response about "scouts" thinking something. I think Keith Law is pretty much a poser, but I'll give him this: his list actually takes chances and disagrees with the clique that's referred to as "industry consensus."
  5. With Boras as his agent I thought he'd be asking for something like 2/15 and when that failed he might sign with the Brewers at 1/5 or so. Now that this has come out its pretty hard to imagine how he ends up looking good out of all this. I'd think he has his eyes on the all time saves list and other than the Brewers, I'm not sure where he would close. I assume not the Dodgers. I don't know about the Marlins. Sure seems like he's in a box. Yeah, its Boras but still.
  6. Chewbacca throws out the first pitch?
  7. Plus, there is a choice between the trade prospects and try for a year or two and then rebuild for 5 or 6 which I think the majority would want want and doing the slow and steady by trading guys a year before FA like Yo and drafting and developing.
  8. I have heaped criticism on Melvin over the years, but he seems very different than earlier. I guess that's a subject unto itself. I think he's been doing great as of late. So its almost as if he is new. Regardless, I'm not sure it matters. He's been using words like "transition" and "mentoring" about the team and himself without outright saying he's going to be "baseball operations" or retire.
  9. Make it like football with offensive and defensive players. How big is an NFL active roster? The TV guys can talk about that rare player who can play both ways like in the old days.
  10. ... as well as Cotts and Wooten. I know Wooten seems iffy, but I think they like him, maybe because he can be the guy to try and get the double play ball. Beyond that there are a half dozen guys on the 40 who could potentially work in the bullpen, if not when the team breaks camp, later in the season. You can add in arms not on the 40 who are old enough and have the skills to give a shot if need be or one of them gets on a roll. One or more people in the FO seem to want that proven closer for the team. Melvin has been that guy in the past, but he's also taken the opposite tack as well. I think having a guy who is a "closer" is the perceived need.
  11. Yeah, like I said, I noticed that a lot of Brewers prospects either don't have scouting reports or they are old. So they probably don't see them. Some of the same guys making this list do a fantasy podcast that I listened to for a bit. I remember how jazzed they were for Alcantara and when Khris Davis came up he was going to be back in the minors in a month... whatevah.
  12. Yeah, that was a tough luck story. Time for a change for the guy.
  13. Supposedly he's bright and has a good attitude. Patience. You know who hit for power early and I kind of latched on to as a guy I watched his box score - "the cheetah" Cody Hawn.
  14. I'm just not a big believer in throwing out contradictory data by using a carefully chosen end point or extrapolating PH ABs to regular at bats.
  15. I only pointed out that there is no evidence and provided a possible scenario. I assumed nothing, but if you go through the thread or read other forums, there are many people who assumed that he was a victim of a clumsy organization. Go ahead and prove the positive.
  16. He has to take the field too. That has to be weighed with his OPS at 2nd. There's also a pretty good chance he doesn't OPS that against lefties again as well. You're also burning a roster spot. Probably 7/8 of all major league players could be platooned to some benefit, but it doesn't happen. Can he even play the outfield? Does anyone think that Nelson Cruz is anything but bad? I'll bet they end up playing him in LF and using Weeks at DH and they'll use some excuse like soreness to justify it. And his OPS will be zero while he's on the DL. I'll go out there with a radical prediction and say he has at least one DL trip.
  17. That was a nice interview. I guess I had mentally put him in the can't hit enough bucket. I know he's really athletic, but how is his defense?
  18. The top is still too low if you ask me. And as much as MLB works their PR machine through the likes of Olney, there is a 9th inning strike zone, a LH batter strike zone, a 3-0 count strike zone, a veteran with a reputation for a good eye (or just complains endlessly) strike zone, a rookie strike zone, same for veteran and rookie pitchers, et cetera. Stop grading umpires on the marshmallow of an expanded strike zone they use. Watch where their 8 free misses (or whatever it is) that they're allowed occur. If they're in critical situations or they can't call the actual strike zone, GET RID OF THEM. If you can't move them into an administrative position, pay them for life to stay home. You're a monopoly choking on money. One thing I know won't happen: Manfred won't criticize the awful contract Selig signed with the umpires.
  19. I'd guess there isn't much chance of them moving to Florida and Attanasio living in Southern Cal is a strong reason, but how does he travel? If he has his own plane, its probably not the biggest deal to go to Florida. That article that Mass Hass linked to suggests there could be financial incentive to going there. I wonder whether its a negative for a team to primarily play a small number of teams in ST. One would be the Cardinals - blech. For a negative about the Cactus League, aren't a lot of the problems the Brewers have there political? If they are, there doesn't seem to be much going on with MLB actually involving themselves and of course the federal oversight is non-existent.
  20. It'd be interesting to know the facts, including how it came out that he wouldn't have anything to do with the outfield and if he was ever asked to just practice out there. I think as a phenomenon, the intense fandom he has generated is interesting. He hit like crazy in the minors - that creates lots of positive buzz, in the majors Melvin and the media were constantly referring to him in extremely positive ways like Rock and his "no one works harder," and he hit for a lot of power. It isn't just chicks that dig the long ball. That constant repetition of positive messages creates attachment, at least that's my theory. In contrast the Brewers are dominated by negative messages from a lot of quarters. That's a topic unto itself. I think its sad that some of the #teamrickie crowd, have ended up as basically Gennett haters. I remember reading the ESPN Brewers blog and someone there proudly quoted just a fantastic rant by Jason Parks where he compared Gennett to Aaron Miles. To the blogger it was like an attorney revealing a tape of a defendant with gun in hand. Parks is with the Cubs now and that's a good thing.
  21. I thought the issue of new facilities was as much political as anything else. There's a development fund that Arizona has that supposedly had some pecking order that they blew off for the Cubs and they've made promises in the past related to Maryvale that they don't fulfill. Stuff like that.
  22. He's young. His suspension was for amphetamines. He could be self medicating for ADHD. Maybe not, but they're incredibly addicting. Maybe his time off for personal reasons was trying to go clean or the proverbial vacation in the hoosegow*. Neither of those make him a bad guy. Its disappointing for the Brewers, but they're working with 7 or so teams of young, high testosterone males. *I hope you guys appreciate me bringing the old guy words
  23. Hallelujah to raising it. Some umpires the top is mid thigh.
  24. He's got some things I don't care for, but I think he's pretty good. If the season is going poorly, I wonder if they would pull the plug on him before mid season since they'll move players at the deadline. That would seem kind of chaotic. I'd be afraid of who they'd pick.
  25. The story talks about "other pieces" being involved. Broxton is a way to make the dollars work, but I too would rather have Broxton than Papelbon. I'd also likely they keep whoever they're willing to trade.
